Russia says to halt Aleppo strikes for eight hours on Thursday Posted: 17 Oct 2016 12:56 PM PDT Russian and Syrian armed forces will pause attacks on the Syrian city of Aleppo for eight hours on Thursday to allow civilians and rebels to leave the city, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Monday. The United Nations, which has long called for weekly 48-hour humanitarian pauses in the fighting, welcomed the Russian announcement. "Any lessening of the violence, lessening of the fighting, any pause that's actually implemented, would be very much welcome," U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters. |
Pentagon voices caution on latest Yemen missile incident Posted: 17 Oct 2016 03:29 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and Idrees Ali WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon declined to say on Monday whether the USS Mason destroyer was targeted by multiple inbound missiles fired from Yemen on Saturday, as initially thought, saying a review was under way to determine what happened. Any determination that the USS Mason guided-missile destroyer was targeted on Saturday could have military repercussions, since the United States has threatened to retaliate again should its ships come under fire from territory in Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi fighters. The United States carried out cruise missile strikes against radar sites in Yemen on Thursday after two confirmed attempts last week to hit the USS Mason with coastal cruise missiles. |

U.N. Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said the cessation of hostilities would begin at 2359 local time (2059 GMT) on Wednesday and could be renewed after the initial three-day period, the United Nations said in statement. |
U.S. air strikes pound Libya's Sirte to oust Islamic State militants Posted: 17 Oct 2016 08:35 AM PDT U.S. aircraft hit Islamic State targets with more 30 strikes over the last three days on the Libyan city of Sirte as pro-government forces push into its last militant-held districts, the U.S. military said on Monday. Libyan forces are close to ending a six-month campaign to liberate Sirte from Islamic State, which took over the city more than a year after taking advantage of factional infighting that emerged after the fall of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. |
Despite failures, North Korea could field missile next year: U.S. expert Posted: 17 Oct 2016 10:40 AM PDT By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In spite of the apparent failure of another North Korean missile test at the weekend, the country's aggressive testing schedule could see its Musudan intermediate ballistic missile entering operational service sometime next year - much sooner than expected, a leading U.S. expert said on Monday. The U.S. military said on Saturday it had detected a failed launch of a Musudan, the latest in a series in violation of United Nations resolutions. The U.S. Strategic Command said the missile failed in a launch near North Korea's northwestern city of Kusong. |

"As the major shareholder of Crown Resorts, I am deeply concerned for the welfare of those Crown employees detained in China," said billionaire Packer, who is engaged to pop diva Mariah Carey and is the company's largest shareholder. |
Australian-bound refugees driven to suicide on Nauru: rights group Amnesty Posted: 17 Oct 2016 05:08 PM PDT By Colin Packham and Jane Wardell SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia on Tuesday rejected claims by rights group Amnesty International that conditions on a tiny South Pacific island where some 400 Australian-bound asylum seekers are held "amount to torture". In a detailed report titled Island of Despair, Amnesty alleged that many of the asylum seekers on Nauru are being driven to attempt suicide to escape the prison-like conditions they face in indefinite detention. Under Australia's tough immigration policy, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach the country by boat are sent for processing at a camp in Nauru or to Manus Island in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and are not eligible for resettlement in Australia. |

"Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day. |
Does UK's landmark anti-slavery law live up to the hype? Posted: 17 Oct 2016 04:11 PM PDT By Timothy Large LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - From life imprisonment for human traffickers to forcing pimps to pay compensation to their victims, Britain has some of the world's toughest sanctions against modern slavery. Passed a little more than a year ago, Britain's Modern Slavery Act has been hailed as a milestone in the anti-slavery fight, combining harsh penalties with progressive measures such as better protections for people at risk of being enslaved. It also requires companies to disclose what they are doing to make sure supply chains are free from slavery, a crime that affects some 46 million people worldwide, with up to 13,000 in Britain. |
Posted: 17 Oct 2016 04:10 PM PDT BANGKOK (AP) — For Thailand's royalists — and there are millions of them — King Bhumibol Adulyadej will probably long remain embedded as a potent, father-like figure who guided them through turbulent decades and espoused ideals of national harmony, labor on behalf of the poor and the virtues of an agrarian society vanishing in the wake of headlong modernization. But how such affection and the king's ideals will impact the country's turbulent political arena and day-to-day life remains to be seen. That depends on how successfully Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn ultimately fills his father's shoes, how the ruling military regime shapes the vacuum left by the politically powerful king and whether Thais translate some of Bhumibol's admonitions — like not succumbing to rampant greed, corruption and environmental exploitation — into practice. |
Mosul offensive provides a pre-election boon for Obama Posted: 17 Oct 2016 04:08 PM PDT The battle for Mosul is a chance for President Barack Obama to claim an election-year victory over the Islamic State group in Iraq and offset failures in Syria. Ask the White House about the slow motion catastrophe in Syria and, more likely than not, officials will talk about the different -- if related -- problem of the Islamic State group. With the battle to retake Mosul kicking off Monday, the Obama administration now really has something to talk about. |

Three Australians are in the group detained late last week, including Crown's head of international VIP gambling Jason O'Connor, in what the industry fears could be a crackdown by Beijing on the promotion of offshore gaming by international companies. Liverpool came closest to winning, United goalkeeper David de Gea thwarting Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic spurned the visitors' best chance with a weak header. |
