Posted: 27 Nov 2016 04:20 PM PST JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's anti-terror squad has arrested two militants who were planning to attack prominent places in the country's capital, including the Myanmar Embassy, police said Sunday. An interrogation of suspected bomb maker Rio Priatna Wibawa, who was arrested this past week, led authorities to the men, said national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar. All three claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group. Bahrain Agam was arrested in northern Aceh province late Saturday and Saiful Bahri was captured in Banten province on Sunday, Amar said. Police had said that Wibawa had sufficient explosives at his home in West Java province to make bombs three times more powerful than those used in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. |

Yemen's Saleh asks UN to allow him to travel to Cuba: statement Posted: 27 Nov 2016 02:47 PM PST Yemen's powerful ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, a key ally of the country's dominant Houthi movement, has asked the United Nations Security Council to allow him to travel to Cuba to pay respects to former president Fidel Castro, according to a statement by his party. Saleh, a former counter-terrorism ally of the U.S., has forces fighting alongside Iran-allied Houthis against a Saudi Arabia-led coalition in Yemen where war has killed at least 10,000 people. The United Nations Security Council in 2014 imposed targeted sanctions on Saleh for threatening peace and obstructing Yemen's political process that subject him to a global travel ban and asset freeze. |

Fillon, the Margaret Thatcher admirer in France's presidential race Posted: 27 Nov 2016 02:25 PM PST By Brian Love PARIS (Reuters) - Francois Fillon, center-right candidate in France's presidential election as of Sunday and pollsters' favorite to win that vote next May, is a social conservative and free marketeer who wants to cut half a million public sector jobs. Behind a mild, refined demeanor, the 62-year-old who won his Les Republicains party primaries, says he will slash the cost of government. An admirer of late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Fillon, who has spent half his life in politics, goes into battle against an increasingly popular far right led by Marine Le Pen and against the divided left of unpopular President Francois Hollande. |
