U.S. says prepared for military solution against Islamic State in Syria

The latest round of Syria peace talks are planned to begin on Monday in Geneva but were at risk of being delayed partly because of a dispute over who will comprise the opposition delegation. Syrian armed rebel groups said on Saturday they held the Syrian government and Russia responsible for any failure of peace talks to end the country's civil war, even before negotiations were due to start.

The Syria peace talks are planned to begin on Jan. 25 in Geneva, but there is uncertainty around the date, partly because of a dispute over who will be part of the opposition delegation.

The isolated town of La Loche, in the western province of Saskatchewan, and its neighboring Clearwater River Dene Indian reserve, six hours away from the nearest airport, embody the dire prospects for Canada's Aboriginals, also known as First Nations. Unemployment stands above 20 percent in the community, suicide and addiction rates are high, homes are overcrowded and family violence is rife in the community which is mostly Metis, a culture with French and Aboriginal roots.

NEW DELHI (AP) — India's government on Saturday started declassifying secret files to settle questions over the death of Subhash Chandra Bose, a Congress party leader who formed a national army to fight British colonial rulers with the help of the Japanese in the 1940s. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released digital copies of 100 secret files relating to Bose's life in the presence of several members of his family. The National Archives of India plans to release digital copies of 25 declassified files on Bose every month. India's Civil Aviation Mnister Mahesh Sharma said Modi already has informed Bose's family that the government possessed "only circumstantial evidence and not any direct evidence about his death." Bose advocated an armed struggle for Indian independence against British colonialists.

As a blizzard that seemed destined for the record books intensified, officials closed all bridges and tunnels into New York and banned all but emergency vehicles from its roads. The void was quickly filled as tourists bundled against the driving snow and wandered through intersections, taking selfies on their smartphones, making snow angels in the snow drifts of Times Square and huddling in coffee shops to warm themselves.
