Border-free Europe unravels as migrant crisis hits record day Posted: 14 Sep 2015 02:14 PM PDT By Krisztina Than and Francois Murphy ROSZKE, Hungary/VIENNA (Reuters) - Two decades of frontier-free travel across Europe unraveled on Monday as countries re-established border controls in the face of an unprecedented influx of migrants, which broke the record for the most arrivals by land in a single day. Germany's surprise decision to restore border controls on Sunday had a swift domino effect, prompting neighbors to impose checks at their own frontiers as thousands of refugees pressed north and west across the continent while Hungary sealed the main informal border crossing point into the European Union. Austria said it would dispatch its military to help police carry out checks at the border with Hungary after thousands of migrants crossed on foot overnight, filling up emergency accommodation nearby, including tents at the frontier. |

Moscow has come under increased international pressure in recent days to explain its moves in Syria, where the Kremlin has been supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a 4-1/2-year war. The Pentagon declined to directly comment on the Reuters report, saying it could not discuss U.S. intelligence. |

As members of the tourist convoy tried to flee, additional forces on the ground fired on them, Egyptian security sources said. Egypt's interior ministry described the attack in the country's western desert as an accident. |

As tough, new border laws and powers to expel asylum seekers entered into force at midnight, Hungary's right-wing government sealed off a railway track used by tens of thousands of migrants, many of them Syrian refugees, to enter the EU this year on foot, for some the end of a journey from war in the Middle East and Africa. |
