Thai army chief summons ousted PM for talks a day after coup Posted: 22 May 2014 03:13 PM PDT By Robert Birsel BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's army chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, will begin to govern a polarized country on Friday, a day after he seized power in a bloodless coup in a bid to end six months of turmoil. Prayuth launched his coup after factions refused to give ground in a struggle for power between the royalist establishment and a populist politician that has raised fears of serious violence and damage to Thailand's economy, southeast Asia's second biggest. Later, the military summoned ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and 22 associates including powerful relatives and ministers in her government, to a meeting at an army facility at 10 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Friday. Yingluck is the sister of Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire telecommunications tycoon turned prime minister who won huge support among the poor but the loathing of the royalist establishment, largely over accusations of corruption and nepotism. |
Biggest attack in years kills 31 in China's troubled Xinjiang Posted: 22 May 2014 02:23 PM PDT By Michael Martina URUMQI, China (Reuters) - Explosives hurled from two vehicles which ploughed into an open market in China's troubled Xinjiang region killed 31 people on Thursday, state media reported, the deadliest act of violence in the region in years. China called the attack in the regional capital of Urumqi a "serious violent terrorist incident" and domestic security chief Meng Jianzhu vowed to strengthen a crackdown on the "arrogance of terrorists". China has blamed a series of knife and bomb attacks in recent months on separatist militants from Xinjiang, the traditional home of the ethnic Muslim Uighurs. The cross-country vehicles rammed into shoppers in an open market, Xinhua news agency reported, citing witness reports. |
U.N. Security Council committee blacklists Nigeria's Boko Haram Posted: 22 May 2014 02:32 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council committee on al Qaeda sanctions blacklisted Nigeria's Islamist militant group Boko Haram on Thursday after the insurgents kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls, diplomats said. Nigeria, which until recently had been reluctant to seek international help to combat Boko Haram, requested earlier this week the group be sanctioned. Hard to say but it's an essential step we had to take," said Australian U.N. Ambassador Gary Quinlan, al Qaeda sanctions committee chair, adding that the aim was to "dry up support" for the group. "We will work to try and make sure that anybody supplying any material assistance to Boko Haram - whether funding or arms - will in fact be stopped, will be deterred by the fact they too will be eligible for listing on the sanctions list," he said. |
Anti-World Cup protest puts Sao Paulo business district on edge Posted: 22 May 2014 04:46 PM PDT Several thousand demonstrators marched through an expensive business district of Brazil's largest city on Thursday to protest against urban developments for the soccer World Cup that they say have left many homeless. "I don't want a World Cup in Brazil, I want a roof," they chanted as they passed the luxurious Iguatemi shopping center, demanding government housing for those who have been pushed out of their homes by soaring real estate prices. Other recent protests have seen clashes with police and rioting, raising fears that violence could disrupt the World Cup that kicks off in three weeks at Sao Paulo's new Arena Corinthians stadium. Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff has promised the squatters low-cost government housing to resolve the dispute. |
U.S. criticizes Cuba over blocking of dissident website Posted: 22 May 2014 04:16 PM PDT The United States criticized Cuban censorship on Thursday after Cubans were blocked from an independent website that is challenging the state monopoly on news on the island. Dissident Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez started publishing 14ymedio.com on Wednesday, but would-be readers were redirected to another site that is highly critical of her, reflecting the official line. Sanchez's site remained blocked to the small minority of Cubans with internet access on Thursday, though it was accessible outside Cuba. The U.S. State Department stopped short of directly blaming Cuba, referring instead to media reports that the government blocked the site, but it took advantage of the incident to denounce Cuban censorship. |
Airlines exiting Venezuela because of World Cup, Maduro says Posted: 22 May 2014 04:09 PM PDT By Alexandra Ulmer CARACAS (Reuters) - Airlines are halting flights to Venezuela not because of the country's economic problems but to take advantage of the World Cup in neighboring Brazil, the president said on Thursday. Air Canada recently cut flights to Venezuela because of security concerns, Alitalia suspended services due to delays in repatriating revenue under currency controls, and a clutch of other airlines have reduced the frequency of flights. Venezuela owes airlines some $4 billion, according to the International Air Transport Association, because the airlines have to sell tickets in the local bolivar currency but cannot get approval to repatriate the revenue. But Maduro, the socialist successor to the late Hugo Chavez, blasted those factors as smokescreens. |

U.N. chief demands urgent action on inadequate Syria aid access Posted: 22 May 2014 04:27 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon on Thursday demanded that the Security Council take urgent action to ensure that millions of Syrians who have been denied emergency relief due to the country's bloody civil war get access to much-needed humanitarian aid. "Despite the clearly expressed will of the council and the best efforts of humanitarian actors, resolution 2139 has yet to make a meaningful difference to the lives of the millions of people in need in Syria," Ban said in a report to the Security Council. Three months after the council achieved rare unity in unanimously approving resolution 2139 which demanded rapid, safe and unhindered aid access, Ban said it was time for the 15-member body to "to urgently consider what steps it will now take to secure compliance with its demands." Ban's report reached the Security Council hours after Russia and China vetoed a French-drafted resolution calling for the International Criminal Court to look into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria's three-year-old civil war, which has killed over 150,000 people. |

Ban said Damascus was still stopping aid convoys from crossing into Syria from Iraq, Jordan and Turkey in violation of Security Council Resolution 2139 adopted in February. The Council is due to debate the report on May 29. For now, the 15 members have failed to reach an agreement with Russia providing diplomatic cover to Damascus. |

Forty-five U.S. senators seek extra time for input on EPA carbon rule Posted: 22 May 2014 03:45 PM PDT The Environmental Protection Agency should double the amount of time the public will have to give input on its forthcoming proposal that will aim to cut carbon pollution from power plants nationwide, 45 U.S. senators urged on Thursday. The senators, Republicans and Democrats from energy-intensive states, sent a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy asking for an extended comment period for the proposal that it will unveil on June 2, which will contain the first mandatory limits on carbon emissions from the sector. "While we all agree that clean air is vitally important, EPA has an obligation to understand the impacts that regulations have on all segments of society," the senators, led by Republican Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Heidi Heitkamp, a North Dakota Democrat, wrote in the letter. The EPA extended the deadline comments on a proposal placing carbon curbs on new power plants to May from March this year. |

"The conflict at this point has resulted in a reduction by almost half of oil output from South Sudan," Ambassador Donald Booth, special envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, told African-based journalists in a conference call from Washington. Oil once generated hundreds of millions of dollars and provided 98 percent of revenue for the government of the impoverished South, which became independent from Sudan three years ago.
