Euro zone leaders: Greece must do more to earn rescue Posted: 12 Jul 2015 02:04 PM PDT Euro zone leaders told near-bankrupt Greece at an emergency summit on Sunday it must enact key reforms this week to restore trust before they will open talks on a financial rescue to keep it in the European currency area. Leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be required to push legislation through parliament to convince his 18 partners in the euro zone to release immediate funds to avert a state bankruptcy and start negotiations on a third bailout program estimated at up to 86 billion euros ($95.5 billion). Six sweeping measures including tax and pension reforms must be enacted by Wednesday night and the entire package endorsed by parliament before talks can start, a draft decision by Eurogroup finance ministers sent to the leaders showed. |
Baghdad car bombs and suicide attacks kill 35 - sources Posted: 12 Jul 2015 03:05 PM PDT Car bombs and suicide attacks targeting mainly Shi'ite Muslim districts of Baghdad killed 35 people on Sunday, one of the heaviest recent tolls in the Iraqi capital, which has faced a wave of bombings by Islamic State militants. The deadliest attack hit the northern Shaab neighborhood, where a car bomb followed by a suicide blast killed 19 people, security and medical sources said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Islamic State militants who control much of northern Iraq and the province of Anbar west of Baghdad regularly send bombers into the capital. |
Iran, powers nearing nuclear deal, no agreement seen before Monday Posted: 12 Jul 2015 01:40 PM PDT By Parisa Hafezi and Arshad Mohammed VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and six world powers were close to nailing down a historic nuclear deal that would bring sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on Tehran's atomic program, but the Iranian foreign minister said no agreement would be announced on Sunday. After more than two weeks of negotiations in Vienna, Iranian and Western officials said the earliest an agreement could be ready was Monday, the self-imposed deadline for clinching a deal, though that could be extended again. "We still have got work to do tomorrow," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters from his hotel balcony. |

The attack took place close to a checkpoint on the outskirts of the city of Khost where several cars had been stopped, Khost police chief Faizullah Ghairat said. The base at Camp Chapman, once used by the CIA to help oversee strikes against Taliban and al Qaeda targets, suffered one of the worst attacks in CIA history in late 2009, when seven intelligence officers were killed by an al Qaeda operative that Americans thought had been "de-radicalized". |

Pope ends South America trip urging youths to 'make a mess' Posted: 12 Jul 2015 04:51 PM PDT By Philip Pullella and Mariel Cristaldo ASUNCION (Reuters) - Pope Francis, drawing to a close his three-country tour of South America, on Sunday urged tens of thousands of youths in Paraguay to look after their less fortunate peers and fight for a dignified life filled with hope and strength. A mess which gives us a free heart, a mess which gives us solidarity, a mess which gives us hope." It was not the first time Francis has called on young people to shake things up, repeating a mantra he voiced in Brazil in 2013 when he urged youngsters to demand a more outward-looking Catholic Church. The Argentine pontiff has made defending the poor a major theme of his "homecoming" trip, which also took him to Ecuador and Bolivia, ranked among Latin America's poorest countries. |
