A migrant takes a selfie with German Chancellor Merkel outside a refugee camp near the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees after registration at Berlin's Spandau districtBy Yannis Behrakis IDOMENI, Greece (Reuters) - Thousands of refugees trudged through mud and torrential rain to Greece's border with Macedonia on Thursday, swelling a human tide across Europe that authorities appear powerless to control. Hungary, a key transit country for migrants trying to reach richer and more welcoming countries such as Germany and Sweden, said it expected to finish building a fence along its border with Serbia by early October to help stem the flow. Denmark, the latest front line in the continent's migrant crisis, allowed refugees to move freely through its territory to Sweden, a day after it shut a motorway link with Germany in a bid to halt the flow of people.

A participant hold images of Russian President Putin and Syrian President al-Assad during an anti-war protest organised by the Communist party near the U.S. embassy in MoscowBy Gabriela Baczynska and Lidia Kelly MOSCOW (Reuters) - By refusing to clarify the scale of its military presence in Syria, Russia keeps the West fearing a considerable build-up to win a stronger bargaining position when world powers sit down to talks on the conflict, Western diplomats in Moscow said. Russia's central demand now is that its long-time ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, should be included in international efforts to contain the militants who have called themselves Islamic State and control large tracts of Syria. U.S. officials said on Wednesday Russia had sent two tank landing ships and additional aircraft to Syria and deployed a small number of forces there.

U.N. says Yemen peace talks set to resume next week

Smoke and balls of fire rise from a military base after it was hit by Saudi-led air strikes in Yemen's capital SanaaThe United Nations on Thursday said peace talks aimed at ending the conflict in Yemen are set to resume next week in the region and urged all parties to participate "in good faith." Saudi Arabia and Arab allies intervened in March to try to restore Yemen's president to power and roll back the Iranian-allied Houthi militia. The war has brought the country to the brink of famine and peace talks have yet to end the fighting. A U.N. press official said U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon's special envoy on Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, welcomed the commitment of Yemen's government, the Houthis and Yemen's General People's Congress to join the talks, which will take place in the region next week.

EU, Cuba enter difficult phase of bilateral talks, focus on political pact

Christian Leffler, chief European negotiator for the EU-Cuba talks and Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno attend a meeting at Cuba's foreign ministry in HavanaBy Daniel Trotta HAVANA (Reuters) - The European Union and Cuba entered the most difficult phase of their bilateral talks on Thursday when they started to discuss a new political agreement to replace a unilateral policy imposed by the Europeans 19 years ago. Both sides reported on Thursday that two of the three pillars of a deal, on trade and cooperation, were basically finished, and they started talking about a political agreement between the 28-nation bloc and the communist-run Caribbean island. The EU's decision last year to open talks was a victory in itself for Cuba as a European acknowledgment it would have to scrap its "common position," which placed a priority on democratic reforms and improved human rights in Cuba.

Love and loathing greet pope's appeal for parishes to host refugees

Pope Francis blesses a boy during his Wednesday general audience in Saint Peter's Square at the VaticanBy Philip Pullella ROME (Reuters) - At a recent meeting of Catholic parishioners in the small town of Castelgomberto in northern Italy, a man got up and shouted "My grandfather built that place for priests, not for Muslims". "It was a pretty stormy meeting," said Father Lucio Mozzo, pastor to six parishes in the area, who was trying to convince residents to allow a family of refugees to move into a disused vicarage in a nearby valley. In an unprecedented gesture last Sunday, Pope Francis appealed to every Catholic parish, religious community and sanctuary in Europe to take in a family of refugees, saying he would set the example by hosting two families in parishes inside the Vatican.. The Roman Catholic Church's capacity to help refugees in parishes from Sicily to Sweden is huge, but the success of the appeal will depend on how many parishes take action.

Germany, which is spearheading Europe's response to the emergency, warned that an EU plan to distribute 160,000 new arrivals among member states was a mere "drop in the ocean". As the historic influx continued unrelentingly, US President Barack Obama sought to respond to political pressure to help alleviate Europe's crisis by ordering his administration to admit at least 10,000 Syrian refugees next year, amid criticism Washington has been slow to help.

British Labour Party Leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn (R) arrives to address a rally in north London on September 10, 2015Voting closed Thursday in the leadership contest for Britain's main opposition Labour party as radical leftist favourite Jeremy Corbyn vowed to "change politics" to rapturous applause at his final campaign rally. Corbyn, a 66-year-old veteran rebel who only entered the leadership contest as a wildcard, has energised the race, drawing support from young and old alike with policies which include opposing austerity cuts and scrapping nuclear weapons. The low-key Corbyn is closer to European anti-austerity movements like Greece's Syriza and Spain's Podemos than to former Labour prime minister Tony Blair, whose centrist, pro-business policies alienated many of those now supporting Corbyn.
