Dozens killed as wave of bomb attacks hits Kabul Posted: 07 Aug 2015 02:38 PM PDT By Mirwais Harooni and Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed dozens of cadets at a Kabul police academy and insurgents struck an area near a U.S. special forces base on Friday in a wave of attacks in the Afghan capital that began with a huge early morning truck bomb explosion. The attacks came just over a week after the Taliban announced a new leader and appeared to dash any hope of a swift return to peace talks between the insurgent movement and the government of President Ashraf Ghani. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the suicide attack on the police academy, in which security sources said at least 50 or 60 people had been killed or wounded. |
Suspected Islamists kill six, take hostages in Mali hotel Posted: 07 Aug 2015 03:51 PM PDT By Adama Diarra and Emma Farge BAMAKO (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist militants attacked a hotel in central Mali used by U.N. staff, killing at least six people, taking others hostage and holding off troops encircling the building on Friday, residents and military sources said. A Russian and a Ukrainian were among those being held inside the Byblos Hotel, officials from their countries said. There were up to eight other captives and South African and French citizens had also been staying there, government officials said. |

Swedish plan to question Assange at Ecuador embassy in UK stalled Posted: 07 Aug 2015 10:17 AM PDT Swedish prosecutors' plan to question WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at Ecuador's embassy in London has stalled as Ecuador has demanded Sweden give him asylum as a condition of the meeting, a Swedish official said on Friday. "You can't give anyone asylum at another country's embassy, that's against international law," Cecilia Riddselius at the Justice Department said. "If he wants asylum he has to come to Sweden." Assange took refuge in the embassy building in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over allegations of sexual assault and rape against two women in 2010. |
Islamic State executed 2,000 Iraqis in Nineveh: defense minister Posted: 07 Aug 2015 12:38 PM PDT More than two thousand Iraqis in the northern province of Nineveh have been executed by Islamic State militants controlling the area, the defense minister said on Friday in a recorded statement. Access is severely restricted in large parts of Iraq's north and west, which Islamic State militants have controlled since sweeping across the Syrian border in mid-2014 in a bid to establish a modern caliphate. Witnesses and sources at a morgue in Mosul, the capital of Nineveh, told Reuters that most of the executions reported on Friday had occurred over the past six months. |
Greece says cannot handle migrants; UNHCR calls crisis 'shameful' Posted: 07 Aug 2015 12:46 PM PDT By Michele Kambas and Stephanie Nebehay LESBOS, Greece/GENEVA (Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras asked Europe to help in handling tens of thousands of refugees coming in from Syria, Afghanistan and other war zones, saying on Friday his cash-strapped country could not deal with them alone. Boatloads of migrants arriving every day had triggered a "humanitarian crisis within the economic crisis," Tsipras said after a meeting with ministers. The comments came as the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) called on Greece to take control of the "total chaos" on Mediterranean islands, where thousands of migrants have landed. |
Several foreigners held, at least seven killed in Mali hotel siege Posted: 07 Aug 2015 04:39 PM PDT Several hostages, including a number of foreigners, were caught in a standoff in central Mali Friday after gunmen stormed a hotel during a shootout with soldiers in which at least five troops and two attackers were killed, the government said. A Ukrainian hostage managed to escape from the "four or five terrorists" who were still barricaded inside the hotel in Sevare, telling soldiers that he had been with three South Africans and a Russian when the shooting began. "At around 7 am (0700 GMT), a terrorist attack was carried out at the Byblos hotel in Sevare, where a part of the (UN mission) MINUSMA staff is staying," the government said in a statement sent to AFP Friday evening, in the first official comment on the attack. |

"It's going to be great motivation for me," Nishikori said. Reigning US Open champion Cilic defeated German teen Alexander Zverev 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) while Nishikori, the top remaining seed after Britain's Andy Murray crashed out, ousted Australia's Sam Groth 6-4, 6-4 in quarter-final matches. |

In an attack claimed by jihadists, Gaza militants earlier fired a rocket into southern Israel, without causing casualties, the Israeli army said. "A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit southern Israel," it said in a statement. |
Greece orders tax fraud probe at Knossos museum Posted: 07 Aug 2015 03:25 PM PDT Greece's government ordered a tax fraud inquiry Friday at one of the country's most visited archaeological sites, after tourists claimed its gift shop was not giving receipts for souvenirs bought there. Inspectors sent to the world-famous Minoan ruins at Knossos on Crete this week found 534 breaches of the tax regulations in just one day, with the till at its shop left unplugged. The debt-crippled country has struggled to combat a deeply ingrained culture of tax evasion, with many making little secret of their preference to do business in cash to avoid paying tax. |

Top Asian News at 9:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 07 Aug 2015 02:33 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia was intensely criticized early in the Flight 370 mystery for failing to quickly disclose that its military radar had picked up an unidentified aircraft the night the Boeing 777 disappeared. Now its reticence has given way to what looks like haste — compared to other countries involved, at least — and that has left relatives of the missing as exasperated as ever. Prime Minister Najib Razak called a press conference around 1:45 a.m. Thursday in Kuala Lumpur to say that a wing fragment found on an Indian Ocean island had been definitively linked to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. That announcement came just minutes ahead of one from French investigators that differed in a significant way: They confirmed the part was from a 777, but did not have proof that it was from Flight 370. |

Authorities started trashing produce on Thursday after President Vladimir Putin ordered the destruction of food brought into the country in breach of a year-old embargo imposed in retaliation for Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. Kerry, on the last leg of a trip through the Middle East and Asia, said progress on rights issues was key to boosting the partnership between the two countries, which fought a bitter decades-long war that ended in 1975. "We have seen some positive steps on human rights in Vietnam over the past year," Kerry said after meeting Vietnam's Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, pointing to the release of several high-profile prisoners of conscience, some of whom now live in exile in the United States. |

Iraq cleric pushes anti-corruption fight as protests flare Posted: 07 Aug 2015 01:49 PM PDT Public anger at power cuts as temperatures soar past 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) and mismanagement of other services has triggered big protests in recent weeks in Baghdad and the southern oil city of Basra. As thousands filled main squares again on Friday, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani pushed Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who last month ordered cuts to top officials' salaries and perks including subsidized power for their homes, to go further. "What is needed from him is to be more daring and braver in his reforms and not to suffice with some secondary steps which he announced recently," Sistani's aide Ahmed al-Safi said in a Friday sermon. |
