More than 700 pilgrims die in crush in worst haj disaster for 25 years Posted: 24 Sep 2015 11:31 AM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi MINA, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - At least 717 pilgrims from around the world were killed on Thursday in a crush outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, Saudi authorities said, in the worst disaster to strike the annual haj pilgrimage for 25 years. Saudi King Salman said he had ordered a review of haj plans after the disaster, in which two large groups of pilgrims arrived together at a crossroads in Mina, a few kilometers east of Mecca, on their way to performing the "stoning of the devil" ritual at Jamarat. Thursday's disaster was the worst to occur at the pilgrimage since July 1990, when 1,426 pilgrims suffocated in a tunnel near Mecca. |
Obama and Putin to meet; Syria and Ukraine vie for attention Posted: 24 Sep 2015 01:18 PM PDT By Roberta Rampton and Denis Dyomkin WASHINGTON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in New York next week at a time of high tension in Europe and the Middle East, but the Kremlin and the White House disagreed on Thursday over the top priority for the talks. The White House insisted the meeting would focus on eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed forces are fighting the Kiev government, prompting tough sanctions that have damaged Russia's economy. Moscow, however, said the main focus would be on Syria, where Russia has built up its military forces in recent weeks with combat aircraft, tanks and other equipment in support of President Bashar al-Assad. |
Lack of EU migrant strategy reignites Serbia-Croatia tensions Posted: 24 Sep 2015 08:17 AM PDT By Zoran Radosavljevic and Matt Robinson ZAGREB/BELGRADE (Reuters) - Former Yugoslav foes Serbia and Croatia traded embargoes and insults on Thursday in the latest fallout from Europe's failure to agree a comprehensive response to the tide of migrants streaming north through the Balkans. After weeks of recrimination and buck-passing, a summit on Wednesday did produce a glimmer of political unity between EU states on measures to help the refugees closer to home, or at least register their asylum requests as soon as they enter the European Union. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the European leader who has done most to welcome refugees, told her parliament that the EU was "still a long way from where we must get to". |
IS suicide bomber dressed as a woman kills 10 at Yemen Houthi mosque Posted: 24 Sep 2015 11:42 AM PDT By Mohammed Ghobari SANAA (Reuters) - At least 10 Muslim worshippers performing Eid al-Adha prayers were killed on Thursday when an Islamic State suicide bomber disguised as a woman blew himself up at a mosque run by Yemen's Houthi group, security sources said. In northern Yemen, residents said warplanes from the Arab coalition conducting air raids against the Houthis struck a house in Hajjah province, killing six members of the same family, including four children. Islamic State's branch in Yemen said the attack at al-Balili mosque, just outside the Old City of Sanaa, had killed or wounded dozens of "rejectionists". |

Snowden launches push for global privacy treaty Posted: 24 Sep 2015 01:30 PM PDT Fugitive former U.S. spy contractor Edward Snowden on Thursday backed a push for an international treaty on privacy rights, protection against improper surveillance and of whistleblowers as he said more countries are trying to boost spying powers. Speaking via video conference from Russia, which granted him asylum in 2013 after he leaked details of mass U.S. surveillance programs, Snowden said mass spying was a global problem that needs a global response. "We have to have a discussion, we have to come forward with proposals to go 'how do we assert what our rights are, traditionally and digitally and to ensure that we can not just enjoy them, but we can protect them," Snowden said. |

Top Asian News at 12:00 a.m. GMT Posted: 24 Sep 2015 05:03 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has invested more time building personal ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping than with most other world leaders. But as Xi arrives in Washington late Thursday for a grand state visit, it's clear that Obama's overtures have produced decidedly mixed results. During intimate walks and hours of private discussion around the world, Obama and Xi forged a historic breakthrough to combat climate change and collaborated on efforts to curb Iran's nuclear program. But there's been little progress on a pair of vexing security issues that will be at the forefront of their latest round of discussions: China's cyberspying in the U.S. and its disputed territorial claims in the Asian Pacific. |

"We currently do not have any plans for a meeting with President Rouhani and we are really not expecting one," said Ben Rhodes, a senior Obama foreign policy aide. The UN General Assembly will mark the first time the two leaders will be in the same venue since the historic July 14 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany -- ended a 13-year standoff over the Islamic republic's nuclear program. |

Authorities, who reached an agreement with the indigenous group Thursday, said some of the tourists showed signs of dehydration but that they were not mistreated by the protesters. |
U.S. lawmakers united by pope's compassion, divided by his views Posted: 24 Sep 2015 03:02 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle and Megan Cassella WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For about an hour, the deeply divided lawmakers of the U.S. Congress closed ranks Thursday behind Pope Francis, the powerful and popular leader of the world's Catholics. Once the first papal speech before Congress was over, however, they retreated to their respective partisan corners, and offered up different interpretations of the pontiff's message.
