Iraq militants take Syria border post in drive for caliphate Posted: 21 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT By Kamal Namaa ANBAR, IRAQ(Reuters) - Sunni fighters have seized a border post on the Iraq-Syria frontier, security sources said, smashing a line drawn by colonial powers a century ago in a campaign to create an Islamic Caliphate from the Mediterranean Sea to Iran. The militants, led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), first moved into the nearby town of al-Qaim on Friday, pushing out security forces, the sources said on Saturday. Sameer al-Shwiali, media adviser to the commander of Iraq's anti-terrorist squad, told Reuters the Iraqi army was still in control of al-Qaim. A three-year-old civil war in Syria has left most of eastern Syria in the hands of Sunni militants, now including the Albukamal-Qaim crossing. |
Syrian jets bomb eastern rebel towns near Iraq, at least 16 dead Posted: 21 Jun 2014 03:11 PM PDT By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian jets bombed on Saturday rebel-held eastern areas close to the border with Iraq under the control of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, killing and injuring dozens in stepped up raids against the militant group since its Iraqi offshoot made stunning gains in northern Iraq. Five raids killed at least 16 people and injured dozens more when bombs hit residential areas in the town of Muhassan just over 100 km (60 miles) from Iraq, a day after tribal elders in the town along the Euphrates River, pledged allegiance to ISIL. The Syrian branch of the hardline Islamists, whose stated aim is to create a strict Islamic state straddling national borders, took over the town of Muhassan along with the Albulil and Albuomar, in the latest advance in eastern Syria adjoining territory the al-Qaeda splinter has seized in Iraq.[ID:nL6N0P13CV] Syrian fighter jets were seen taking off from the rebel besieged Deir al-Zor military airport to bomb several areas under the control of ISIL and witnesses and activists said areas near the border with Iraq close to the city of Abu Kamal were bombed. |
Poroshenko's Ukraine peace plan gets limited support from Putin Posted: 21 Jun 2014 01:03 PM PDT By Lidia Kelly and Richard Balmforth MOSCOW/KIEV (Reuters) - Russia's Vladimir Putin on Saturday voiced limited support for Ukraine's unilateral ceasefire in its conflict with pro-Russian separatists, but told President Petro Poroshenko there had to be talks with the rebels to prevent the truce collapsing. The Kremlin set out Putin's view after overnight fighting in Ukraine's east in which pro-Russian separatists, according to Ukrainian government forces, attacked military bases and customs posts within hours of the ceasefire coming into force on Friday night. |
Egypt upholds death sentence on Brotherhood leader, nearly 200 supporters Posted: 21 Jun 2014 01:08 PM PDT By Yasmine Saleh and Dominic Evans CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court confirmed death sentences on Saturday against the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and 182 supporters, in a mass trial of Islamists who ruled Egypt for a year but face a fierce crackdown under the new president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Mohamed Badie and other defendants were charged in connection with violence that erupted in the southern town of Minya following the ousting of the Brotherhood's President Mohamed Mursi last July, led by then army chief Sisi. The court's decision came two months after it referred the case against Badie, general guide of the now outlawed Brotherhood, and 682 other defendants to a top religious authority, the first step to imposing death penalties. Sisi, who won a presidential election last month, said in the run-up to the vote that the Brotherhood - Egypt's oldest, most organized and successful political group - was finished and would not exist under his rule. |
Al Qaeda denies most of its Yemen fighters are foreigners Posted: 21 Jun 2014 11:09 AM PDT Islamist websites published an al Qaeda statement on Saturday denying claims by Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi that the vast majority of its fighters in the troubled country are foreigners. In April, Yemeni troops began an offensive into an expanse of south Yemen, including Abyan and Shabwa provinces, in a campaign to root out al Qaeda militants. In a speech on April 29, Hadi said around 70 percent of al Qaeda members in Yemen were foreigners. |
European left-wingers back Juncker for EU Commission Posted: 21 Jun 2014 09:35 AM PDT By Mark John and Elizabeth Pineau PARIS (Reuters) - Left-wing European leaders agreed on Saturday to back Luxembourg conservative Jean-Claude Juncker for the post of European Commission president, saying they would seek other top EU jobs for their party allies in return. Among those posts was the European Parliament presidency, whose incumbent Martin Schulz, a German Social Democrat, won their backing to seek a new term at the head of the EU assembly. The decision to back Juncker at a meeting in Paris of eight prime ministers, including Italy's Matteo Renzi and German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, makes Britain's David Cameron look increasingly isolated before next week's EU summit. |

Study points to increase in great white sharks off U.S. Atlantic Coast Posted: 21 Jun 2014 03:15 PM PDT By Jonathan Allen NEW YORK (Reuters) - The number of great white sharks off the U.S. Atlantic Coast appears to have increased since the early 1990s after conservation measures were introduced to halt their decline, a U.S. government scientist said on Saturday. Scientists for the National Marine Fisheries Service presented the findings in a study published this month in the PLOS ONE online journal. Tobey Curtis, one of the government scientists who worked on the study, said in an interview his team could only capture trends in shark abundance and the study could not be used to estimate the total number of sharks in the Atlantic's northwest region, which extends from the U.S. East Coast. The study's authors described their study as based on the largest white shark dataset yet compiled from the region. |
