Ukraine moves forces to Odessa, helicopter downed in east Posted: 05 May 2014 04:22 PM PDT By Aleksandar Vasovic and Maria Tsvetkova ODESSA/SLAVIANSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian rebels shot down a Ukrainian helicopter in fierce fighting near the eastern town of Slaviansk on Monday, and Kiev drafted police special forces to the southwestern port city of Odessa to halt a feared westward spread of rebellion. Ukraine said the Odessa force, based on "civil activists", would replace local police who had failed to tackle rebel actions at the weekend. Its dispatch was a clear signal from Kiev that, while tackling rebellion in the east, it would vigorously resist any sign of a slide to a broader civil war. Odessa, with its ethnic mix from Russians to Ukrainians, Georgians to Tatars a cultural contrast to the pro-Russian east, was quiet on Monday. |
Nigeria's Boko Haram claims abduction of over 200 schoolgirls: AFP Posted: 05 May 2014 12:42 PM PDT By Tim Cocks and Isaac Abrak ABUJA (Reuters) - The leader of Boko Haram on Monday threatened to sell more than 200 schoolgirls his Islamist militant group kidnapped in northeastern Nigeria last month. Boko Haram militants stormed an all-girl secondary school in the village of Chibok, in Borno state, on April 14 and packed the teenagers, who had been taking exams, onto trucks and disappeared into a remote area along the border with Cameroon. I will sell them in the market, by Allah," Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau says in a video, chuckling as he stands in front of an armored personnel carrier with two masked militants wielding AK-47s on either side of him. Boko Haram, seen as the main security threat to Nigeria, Africa's leading energy producer, is growing bolder and extending its reach. |
Exclusive: Global anti-money laundering group moves meeting from Moscow Posted: 05 May 2014 02:22 PM PDT By Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An international organization that sets standards for how countries combat money laundering said it has decided not to hold a planned meeting in Moscow next month due to the continuing Ukraine crisis. A summit meeting of the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was to be held in Moscow in June, in part because the group's current head is Vladimir Nechaev, chief of Russia's anti-money laundering agency. However, on Sunday, national anti-money laundering agencies belonging to FATF received a notice from the group saying the meeting would be held in Paris instead. "It became apparent that it would be difficult to ensure full attendance of FATF delegations at the scheduled plenary in Moscow but there was widespread support for the work of the FATF to continue uninterrupted," the announcement said. |
Egypt's Sisi says Muslim Brotherhood is finished Posted: 05 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT By Michael Georgy and Tom Perry CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian presidential frontrunner Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday appeared to rule out reconciliation with the Muslim Brotherhood movement, raising the specter of a prolonged conflict with a group he said was finished. Sisi, who ousted the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi from the presidency last July after mass protests against Mursi's rule, accused the Brotherhood of links to violent militant groups, adding that two plots to assassinate him had been uncovered. "I want to tell you that it is not me that finished (the Brotherhood). You, the Egyptians, are the ones who finished it," Sisi said in a joint interview with Egypt's privately owned CBC and ONTV television channels broadcast on Monday. |
U.S. recognizes Syria opposition offices as 'foreign mission' Posted: 05 May 2014 04:24 PM PDT The United States said on Monday it would recognize the main opposition Syrian National Coalition offices as a diplomatic foreign mission and announced plans for a $27 million increase in non-lethal assistance to rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad. The announcement came at the start of a visit to Washington by a Syrian opposition delegation led by Ahmad Jarba, president of the coalition, also known as the Syrian Opposition Coalition. He is set to meet U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday. Syrian government forces have made gains on the battlefield and Damascus has announced a presidential election for June 3, expected to be won by Assad. |
Exclusive: U.S. to sanction both sides of South Sudan conflict in days - sources Posted: 05 May 2014 04:26 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau and Lesley Wroughton UNITED NATIONS/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Amid warnings that ethnic violence in South Sudan risks spiraling into genocide, the United States expects to impose sanctions on individuals on both sides of the conflict in the coming days, U.S. and other diplomatic sources said on Monday. The sources, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said that the sanctions would involve a ban on travel to the United States and the freezing of any assets under U.S. authority. "In the coming days," a U.S. official said about the expected timing of the move. The other sources confirmed that the United States had already made a decision to sanction several individuals and it was now a question of timing. |
NATO: Russia might achieve goals in eastern Ukraine without invasion Posted: 05 May 2014 04:39 PM PDT By Randall Palmer OTTAWA (Reuters) - NATO's top military commander in Europe said on Monday he no longer thought regular Russian troops would enter eastern Ukraine, predicting Moscow could achieve its goals through the unconventional forces stirring up trouble there. U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove said it was a completely false Russian narrative that it was only Ukrainians rebelling in the east of their country, saying it was clear that special forces troops from Russia were operating there as they did in Crimea before its annexation. "Remember that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin denied their presence and now he has admitted to their presence in Crimea. The same thing will come out of Ukraine as time rolls out," he told a military and diplomatic audience in Ottawa. |
U.S. threatens sanctions against South Sudan rebel leader Posted: 05 May 2014 04:37 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and Shrikesh Laxmidas LUANDA (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry threatened sanctions and other "consequences" for South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar on Monday if he refuses to commit to peace talks aimed at ending more than four months of fighting that has killed thousands. Kerry flew to South Sudan on Friday, securing a commitment from President Salva Kiir to fly to Ethiopia for face-to-face talks with rival Machar. Kerry, who said that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon would go to South Sudan's capital, Juba, on Tuesday, noted that these consequences also included "accountability" for atrocities committed in the conflict. Kerry condemned recent military offensives by South Sudan's government forces against opposition-held positions in Bentiu, Nassir and other places in Unity and Jonglei states. |

British minister says EU shale gas would curb reliance on Russia Posted: 05 May 2014 03:45 PM PDT European countries should make a push to start producing shale gas if they hope to reduce reliance on Russian natural gas, Britain's energy minister said on Monday. Many European Union countries have yet to allow or encourage the extraction technique known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which uses a mix of pressurized water, sand an chemicals to unlock hydrocarbons from rocky deposits. "There are a number of European countries that are extremely dependent on Russian gas," Britain's Minister of State for Business and Energy Michael Fallon told Reuters. |

Venezuela violated rights of protesters: rights group Posted: 05 May 2014 03:04 PM PDT Venezuela has violated the rights of opposition protesters through beatings, illegal detentions and failure to follow due process, Human Rights Watch said in a report released on Monday. The report, entitled "Punished for Protesting," said troops used excessive force against peaceful protesters, and that state prosecutors and judges tolerated or participated in the abuses. The report was based on research in March on 45 cases of "serious human rights violations." The group interviewed more than 90 people, including victims and their families, and more than a dozen lawyers who provided legal counsel. At least 41 people have died, including both government and opposition supporters plus security force members, since protests began in early February, according to official figures. |
