Greek parliament approves bailout prior measures package Posted: 15 Jul 2015 04:27 PM PDT The Greek parliament passed a sweeping package of austerity measures demanded by European partners as the price for opening talks on a multi-billion euro bailout package needed to keep the near-bankrupt country in the euro zone. The vote followed a stormy debate in which dozens of lawmakers on the left of the ruling Syriza party rebelled against Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and opposed the package, which passed with the support of opposition parties. The package passed with 229 votes in favor in the 300-seat chamber but 38 Syriza lawmakers abstained or voted against the government, including former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and the current Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, Deputy Labour Minister Dimitris Stratoulis and speaker of parliament Zoe Constantopoulou. |
Obama: Iran deal is only alternative to more Mideast war Posted: 15 Jul 2015 01:49 PM PDT By Matt Spetalnick and Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, seeking to sell the Iran nuclear deal to skeptical U.S. lawmakers and nervous allies, insisted on Wednesday the landmark agreement was the only alternative to a nuclear arms race and more war in the Middle East. Obama made his case in a nationally televised news conference responding to critics at home and abroad after Iran and six world powers sealed an accord in Vienna on Tuesday to restrict Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. "Without a deal," Obama said, "there would be no limits to Iran's nuclear program and Iran could move closer to a nuclear bomb ... Without a deal, we risk even more war in the Middle East." Obama, who must still overcome a congressional hurdle to enact the accord, said that if the United States does not seize the opportunity, "future generations will judge us harshly." The agreement is a triumph for Obama, who has made outreach to America's enemies a hallmark of his presidency, but it is also seen as his biggest foreign policy gamble since taking office in 2009. |
Exclusive: Carter to travel to Saudi Arabia to discuss Iran, says Rice Posted: 15 Jul 2015 04:31 PM PDT By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter will travel to Saudi Arabia as part of the Obama administration's efforts to convince skeptical allies in the region about the benefits of the Iran nuclear deal, National Security Adviser Susan Rice said on Wednesday. Carter's trip next week, which the White House already announced will include a stop in Israel, is one of several initiatives President Barack Obama and his staff are taking to sell the controversial deal at home and abroad. Rice, in an interview with Reuters, gave a strong indication that some of Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium would be shipped to Russia as a result of the historic deal, saying the United States would not be concerned by that. |
U.S., Iran finesse inspections of military sites in nuclear deal Posted: 15 Jul 2015 03:50 PM PDT By Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major powers and Iran finessed how U.N. inspectors will get access to Iranian military sites in Tuesday's nuclear agreement, with a formula that gives the United Nations strong inspection powers while allowing Tehran to save face. Deep in the deal's details is a procedure under which Iran would have to provide access to suspect sites, including at its military facilities, within 24 days. If Iran refused, it would face the possibility of U.N. sanctions being slapped back on it. |

"We are talking about forging a new kind of relationship between both states, different from our entire common history," Castro, 84, told the Cuban National Assembly, according to official media. China meat smuggling crackdown stokes risky underground trade Posted: 15 Jul 2015 02:10 PM PDT By Adam Jourdan and Clare Baldwin SHANGHAI/HONG KONG (Reuters) - On a dusty industrial lot in northern Hong Kong, a group of travelers sheltered in the shade away from the pressing July heat, packing old cloth bags and backpacks with Styrofoam to protect a more precious cargo: smuggled meat. Crowded amid the warehouses of Sheung Shui, a remote suburb near the mainland border, the group of around 40 are about to take frozen Brazilian beef into China to feed a growing demand for meat that is unsated by local produce or approved imports. "Before they used trucks, but those were for high-quality beef from Japan and New Zealand and maybe America," one Hong Kong smuggler Alan Wong, 36, told Reuters, explaining smugglers could earn 200-300 yuan ($30-50) per trip. |

Greek energy minister says would resign if PM asked Posted: 15 Jul 2015 04:54 PM PDT Greek Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis said on Thursday he would quit if Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras sought his resignation, after he and party rebels downvoted a crucial reforms package approved by parliament to stave off bankruptcy. Lafazanis was among 38 lawmakers of left-wing Syriza who rejected or abstained from a tax and fiscal reform bill required for the country to start bailout talks with foreign lenders. "If at any point my resignation is sought it would be at the disposal of the (Prime Minister)," Lafazanis told journalists. |
