Syrian army presses offensive against Islamic State Posted: 04 Jun 2016 03:18 PM PDT The offensive is the third big assault on the self-proclaimed caliphate in recent days after Iraqi forces attempted to storm Falluja in central Syria and a Syrian militia advanced with U.S. support towards Manbij in the north near the Turkish border. The offensives are some of the most aggressive campaigns against Islamic State since it declared its aim to rule over all Muslims from parts of Iraq and Syria two years ago. Friday's assault saw the army reach the edge of Syria's Raqqa province after heavy Russian air strikes hit Islamic State-held territory in eastern areas of neighboring Hama province. |
Venezuela's Maduro entreats Latin America not to isolate him Posted: 04 Jun 2016 12:05 PM PDT By Sarah Marsh and Nelson Acosta HAVANA (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called upon Latin America on Saturday not to give in to "brutal pressure" from the United States to isolate his government, which is battling intensifying opposition at home and abroad. The head of the Organization of American States (OAS), that Venezuela views as a pawn of U.S. policy, this week called for an emergency meeting to discuss a possible censure of the country for violating democratic norms. Meanwhile on Thursday a senior Brazilian official said Brazil may help block Venezuela from taking the rotating presidency of the Mercosur trade group this month, in a bid to prevent Maduro from strengthening his power. |
UK 'Remain' camp's lead narrows before EU referendum: Opinium Posted: 04 Jun 2016 03:09 PM PDT The campaign to stop Britain voting to leave the European Union in a June 23 referendum has seen its lead shrink over the past two weeks, an online poll published by market research company Opinium showed on Saturday. The poll conducted between May 31 and June 3 showed 43 percent of people planned to vote to stay in the EU while 41 percent wanted to leave, Opinium said on its website. This was a narrower lead than the 44-40 split in Opinium's last poll for The Observer newspaper on May 21. |

Kinshasa rally in support of DR Congo's Kabila draws thousands Posted: 04 Jun 2016 02:47 PM PDT Thousands of supporters celebrated Congolese leader Joseph Kabila's birthday with a rally in Kinshasa Saturday, at which a party supremo floated the idea of holding a referendum to extend the president's rule. The suggestion is likely to fuel opposition suspicion that Kabila, in power since his father's assassination in 2001, is preparing to remain in office beyond his two-term limit which ends in December. In a show of support for Kabila, some 5,000 people marched through the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo in a carnival-like atmosphere before gathering at a stadium to mark the leader's 45th birthday, an AFP reporter saw. |

The move was announced just two weeks after the pope came under fire for meeting a top French cardinal accused of covering up for a paedophile priest in a scandal that has shaken France's Catholic Church. Kabila ally floats possibility of Congo referendum on term limits Posted: 04 Jun 2016 12:29 PM PDT A top ally of Congolese President Joseph Kabila on Saturday raised the possibility of a constitutional referendum to alter the number of terms he can serve, defying opponents and western powers who insist Kabila should leave office this year. Term limits in Democratic Republic of Congo's 2006 constitution bar Kabila, who has ruled the central African country since 2001, from running for a third elected term in a presidential poll scheduled for November. The country's constitutional court ruled last month that Kabila would remain in office if the vote does not take place on time. |
