Turkey's Erdogan links coup suspects, PKK to bomb attacks Posted: 18 Aug 2016 01:28 PM PDT By Humeyra Pamuk ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday accused followers of a U.S.-based Islamic cleric he blames for last month's coup attempt of being complicit in attacks by Kurdish militants in Turkey's southeast which killed 10 people. Erdogan has blamed a network led by Fethullah Gulen, a cleric in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, for the failed rebellion launched by rogue soldiers. |
U.S. says payment to Iran used as leverage for prisoners' release Posted: 18 Aug 2016 03:11 PM PDT The U.S. State Department said on Thursday it released $400 million in cash to Iran under a tribunal settlement only once it was assured that American prisoners had been freed and had boarded a plane. "The payment of the $400 million was not done until after the prisoners were released," State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters. It was the first time the administration has said publicly that it used the payment as leverage to ensure the prisoners were released by Iran. |
Islamic State claims responsibility for attack on traffic police in Russia Posted: 18 Aug 2016 12:40 PM PDT Islamic State on Thursday claimed responsibility for an attack on a traffic police post outside Moscow a day earlier in which both of the attackers were killed. The militant group made the claim via the Amaq news agency, which it regularly uses to issue statements. The Amaq statement said: "Two fighters of the Islamic State assaulted Russian policemen in the Balashikha area, east of Moscow". |
MSF to evacuate staff from Yemen hospitals after Saudi-led air strikes Posted: 18 Aug 2016 01:07 PM PDT Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said it was evacuating its staff from six hospitals in northern Yemen on Thursday after a Saudi-led coalition air strike hit a health facility operated by the medical aid group killing 19 people. "Given the intensity of the current offensive and our loss of confidence in the Saudi-led coalition to prevent fatal attacks, MSF considers the hospitals in Saada and Hajjah governorates unsafe for both patients and staff," the group said in a statement. Countless attacks on health facilities in Yemen have endangered patients and staff and displayed a failure by warring parties to control the use of force, the group said. |
U.S. State Department finds briefing video cut but unclear why Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:00 PM PDT A U.S. State Department video of a press briefing about secret U.S.-Iran nuclear talks was deliberately edited but there is no evidence to suggest the cut was intended to hide information, a U.S. spokesman said on Thursday after further details were released of an investigation into the incident. "We are confident the video of that press briefing was deliberately edited," State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters, adding: "What we were not able to determine is why the edit was made in the first place. The State Department initially said it was caused by a "glitch" but later said it was a deliberate omission. |
U.N. welcomes Russian words on Aleppo truce, trucks 'ready to move' Posted: 18 Aug 2016 12:47 PM PDT By Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - Russia said on Thursday it would support a 48-hour ceasefire in Aleppo, a move the U.N. Syria envoy said would allow aid to reach besieged areas soon, as long as all sides respect the temporary truce. As pictures of a dazed child pulled from the rubble in heavily bombarded rebel-held eastern Aleppo captured the plight of the city's civilians, Moscow said it was ready to start the first "humanitarian pause" next week. Western diplomats gave cautious welcome to the announcement, while raising questions about Moscow's motives and stressing the United Nations must be in charge of a sustained aid operation. |
Trump advisers waged covert influence campaign Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:34 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — A firm run by Donald Trump's campaign chairman directly orchestrated a covert Washington lobbying operation on behalf of Ukraine's ruling political party, attempting to sway American public opinion in favor of the country's pro-Russian government, emails obtained by The Associated Press show. Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, never disclosed their work as foreign agents as required under federal law. |
Leicester and Arsenal seek to pick up pieces Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:27 PM PDT Following opening-day defeats, champions Leicester City and Arsenal, last season's Premier League top two, will be desperate to get their campaigns in gear at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. Three months on from their fairytale 5,000-1 title win, Leicester were stunned 2-1 by crisis club Hull City last weekend, while injury-depleted Arsenal were run ragged by Liverpool in a 4-3 home defeat. With Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea winning their first games, it has left both teams playing catch-up already, but Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri refuses to panic. |
Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:26 PM PDT TOKYO (AP) — The defection of a North Korean senior diplomat in London poses a major problem for Pyongyang on a number of fronts — not least of which is how to publicly respond. As of Thursday, Pyongyang hadn't made a public statement about the defection. But when — or if — it does, its response will likely be ferocious and accusatory. Seoul's Unification Ministry announced Wednesday that Thae Yong Ho, minister at the North Korean Embassy in London, has arrived in South Korea with his family and is under the protection of the South Korean government. Thae was the second-highest official in North Korea's embassy and is the most senior North Korean diplomat to defect to the South. |
Vietnam lifts ban on Australian commemoration of 1966 battle Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:25 PM PDT VUNG TAU, Vietnam (AP) — Under pressure from Australia, Vietnam lifted a sudden ban on veterans who had traveled to the country to mark the 50th anniversary of Australia's most costly battle of the Vietnam War, but officials prevented hundreds from paying their respects at a monument to Australian casualties, Australia's prime minister said Friday. |

Mexico says police executed 22 on ranch, in 'grave' rights abuse Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:15 PM PDT Mexican police arbitrarily executed nearly two dozen suspected gang members on a ranch last year, the government's National Human Rights Commission said on Thursday, one of the worst abuses by security forces in a decade of grisly drug violence. In May last year, federal police ambushed suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (JNG) holed up at Rancho El Sol near the small town of Tanhuato in the violent western state of Michoacan and killed 42 men. Only one policeman died in the fight, in which police backed by a Black Hawk helicopter attacked the cartel, a kill rate way higher than international norms, but not uncommon in Mexico's drug war. |
US sought 'leverage' with $400 mn payment to Iran Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:10 PM PDT The United States acknowledged that it waited for Iran to release American prisoners before delivering $400 million in cash that it owed the country, but again insisted the payment was not ransom. "With concerns that Iran may renege on the prisoner release... we of course sought to retain maximum leverage until after American citizens were released," State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters. In January, five American prisoners were released as Washington granted clemency to seven Iranians and withdrew arrest warrants for 14 others. |

Child soldier 'nightmare' could be imminent in South Sudan: UNICEF Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:04 PM PDT By Katy Migiro NAIROBI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A spike in the forced recruitment of child soldiers in South Sudan could be imminent, the United Nations' children's agency said on Friday, amid fears that the world's youngest nation is on the brink of renewed civil war. "At this precarious stage in South Sudan's short history, UNICEF fears that a further spike in child recruitment could be imminent," UNICEF's deputy executive director Justin Forsyth said in a statement after visiting South Sudan. |
Column: What would 'Lyin' Ryan' Lochte do? Run away Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:03 PM PDT RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — To hear Ryan Lochte tell the story, at least the first time, he unflinchingly stared down the barrel of a gun during a holdup while his teammates cowered on the ground. By the time he was done with the retelling, the fake cops, the gun pointed at his head and the scene of the crime was a gas station instead of a taxi. |

UN says no evidence of Morocco incursion in disputed W. Sahara Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:49 PM PDT The United Nations on Thursday said it had found no sign of any suspicious military activity by Morocco in the disputed Western Sahara, after a separatist group complained about a Moroccan security operation in the region's far south. The Polisario Front campaigning for the independence of the Western Sahara had protested to the UN about the operation earlier this week, claiming it had involved large numbers of military units and had taken them beyond the sand wall that marks Morocco's normal area of control. Responding to the complaint, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the UN mission in the territory, MINURSO, had investigated the allegations and had "not observed military presence or equipment in the buffer strip". |
China's Ren, 15, follows in Fu footsteps with gold Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:47 PM PDT Fifteen-year-old Ren Qian followed in the footsteps of Chinese diving great Fu Mingxia when she became the youngest medallist of the Rio Games with her 10m platform gold on Thursday. The reigning World Cup champion becomes the second youngest winner of the women's 10m platform since Fu became the icon of the 1992 Barcelona Games winning the 10m platform aged 13 years. Ren emerged from the shadows of 17-year-old teammate Si Yajie, who had dominated the qualifiers and semi-finals in Rio, to give China six wins out of seven events in the Olympic diving competition. |

Lawyer accused of fraud by U.S. in BP oil spill case is acquitted Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:34 PM PDT A prominent Texas lawyer was acquitted on Thursday of charges he made up thousands of fake clients to sue BP Plc for damages that the oil company caused in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill, court records show. Mikal Watts was among five defendants found not guilty by a Mississippi federal jury of charges related to an alleged scheme to defraud a program set up by BP to compensate people who suffered economic losses from the spill. Two other defendants were found guilty. |

Key L.A.-Las Vegas highway link reopens as wildfire rages on Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:18 PM PDT By Krystian Orlinski WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (Reuters) - The main highway linking Southern California to Las Vegas reopened on Thursday as authorities battled a fast-moving wildfire that raged for a third day in mountains east of Los Angeles. More than 80,000 residents remained under evacuation orders from the so-called Blue Cut Fire, named for a narrow gorge near its origin. It erupted on Tuesday in the Cajon Pass near Interstate 15, the primary traffic route between greater Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Nevada, to the northeast and quickly devoured canyons and hillsides filled with dense, drought-parched brush and chaparral. |
Clement gets gold, US women's relay team grabs 2nd chance Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:15 PM PDT RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Kerron Clement delivered another gold for the U.S. on Thursday after the "awesome hour" of the night before and the women's 4x100-meter relay team ran alone in a race that looked just like a practice session, just with one mighty difference: A place in the Olympic final was on the line. |

Mexico police executed 22 people in raid last year: rights body Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:01 PM PDT Some 22 suspected gang members were arbitrarily executed in a confrontation with police in western Mexico last year, Mexico's National Human Rights Commission said on Thursday, the latest grim example of rights abuses by security forces. In May last year, federal police launched a raid against suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (JNG) holed up in a ranch near the small town of Tanhuato in the violent western state of Michoacan. At least 42 suspected gang members were killed and one police officer died in an incident that raised questions due to the one-sided death toll, one of the highest since President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in 2012, pledging to put an end to years of gangland violence. |
2 Puerto Rico distributors settle in toxic pesticide probe Posted: 18 Aug 2016 04:01 PM PDT SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The U.S. government announced Thursday that it imposed a $210,000 fine on two pesticide distributors in Puerto Rico as part of a widespread probe into a toxic pesticide that nearly killed an American family in the neighboring U.S. Virgin Islands. |
