Euro zone demands more from Greece, delays decision on aid Posted: 11 Jul 2015 04:58 PM PDT Skeptical euro zone finance ministers demanded on Saturday that Greece go beyond painful austerity measures accepted by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras if he wants them to open negotiations on a third bailout for his bankrupt country to keep it in the euro. The ministers postponed until Sunday a decision on whether to recommend starting talks on a new loan for Athens and sought further commitments first on product market liberalization, labor laws, privatization, state reform and more defense cuts, plus a promise to pass key laws next week, officials said. The Eurogroup session will resume on Sunday, five hours before heads of state and government of the 19-nation currency area are to meet to decide on Greece's fate in the euro zone. |
France says 'decision time' has come in Iran nuclear talks Posted: 11 Jul 2015 01:36 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau and John Irish VIENNA (Reuters) - France's foreign minister appeared to put pressure on the United States and Iran on Saturday to speed up nuclear talks, saying all issues were now on the table and that the time had come to make a decision. Western and Iranian diplomats close to the talks said they expected to work well into the night in hopes of a breakthrough, perhaps as early as on Sunday, on a deal to bring sanctions relief for Tehran in exchange for curbs on its atomic program. Iran and the six powers involved in the talks - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - have given themselves until Monday to reach a deal, their third extension in two weeks, as the Iranian delegation accused the West of throwing up new stumbling blocks to an accord. |
Bombing and heavy fighting break Yemen truce: residents Posted: 11 Jul 2015 11:58 AM PDT By Mohammed Ghobari and Mohammed Mukhashaf SANAA/ADEN (Reuters) - Saudi-led air strikes and heavy shelling between warring factions shook several cities in Yemen on Saturday, residents said, violating a United Nations humanitarian truce which took effect just before midnight. A coalition of Arab states has been bombing the Iranian-allied Houthi rebel movement - Yemen's dominant force - since late March in a bid to restore to power President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has fled to Riyadh. Yemeni government officials were not immediately available to comment, but the U.N. Secretary General's office said before the truce that President Hadi had "communicated his acceptance of the pause to the coalition to ensure their support." Air raids pounded Houthi and Yemeni army units in the capital Sanaa and in the group's stronghold province of Saada along the border with Saudi Arabia. |
Serbian PM forced to flee Srebrenica massacre memorial Posted: 11 Jul 2015 12:10 PM PDT By Daria Sito-Sucic and Maja Zuvela POTOCARI, Bosnia (Reuters) - Serbia's prime minister was forced to flee a ceremony held to mark 20 years since the Srebrenica massacre on Saturday, when mourners hurled stones and bottles at him in what his government later described as an attempted assassination. Bodyguards surrounded Aleksandar Vucic and rushed him away through a crowd that turned on him moments after he entered the cemetery and laid flowers to 8,000 Muslim men and boys executed after the U.N. safe haven fell to Bosnian Serb forces towards the end of the 1992-95 war. Stones and bottles were thrown from the crowd, some of whom were heard to cry "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest), in an attack underscoring the depth of anger over Belgrade's denial of the massacre as genocide. |
U.S. air strike kills Islamic State leader in Afghanistan Posted: 11 Jul 2015 08:45 AM PDT By Mirwais Harooni KABUL (Reuters) - The top Islamic State commander in Afghanistan has been killed by a U.S. air strike in the country's east, officials said on Saturday, the fourth ex-Taliban who declared loyalty to the Middle East-based militants to be assassinated within a week. Hafez Saeed was the leader of Islamic State in the "so-called Khorasan state", Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS) said, referring to an old term the militants use to describe Afghanistan and Pakistan. |
Mali makes arrests linked to Islamist attacks: sources Posted: 11 Jul 2015 12:26 PM PDT The Malian army captured two people linked to Islamist group Ansar Dine and seized evidence linking them to planned attacks, security sources said on Saturday. Ansar Dine was part of an alliance of Islamist fighters that helped seize Mali's desert north after a Tuareg uprising in 2012 but was ousted by a French military operation a year later. The group this week claimed responsibility for a series of recent attacks across Mali's south and west, including the capital Bamako, formerly deemed safe. |

An immigrant family builds a successful business and buys a four-bedroom house in a quiet neighborhood with good schools for their young son. But not all is as it seems on the steep, curving streets of San Diego's Rancho Penasquitos. A 45-year-old Chinese woman, Xu Ting, lives in a brown shingle house with a weedy driveway. She has been sued for counterfeiting by eight luxury brands, including Gucci and Louis Vuitton, and owes Chanel Inc. $6.9 million in damages. None of this has stopped her from becoming a legal permanent resident of the United States and achieving a comfortable suburban life. |

The interior ministry said the volcano in Colima state could continue to spew lava before waning in a few weeks -- or possibly experience its biggest eruption in more than a century. More than 80 people were evacuated from nearby communities after the volcano sent a four-kilometer (2.5-mile) column of ash skyward late Friday. |

The 78-year-old pope -- in Paraguay on the last stop of a three-nation tour of South America -- was speaking on the esplanade of the domed shrine of the Virgin of Caacupe, not far from the border with his native Argentina. Paraguay was left reeling during the so-called War of the Triple Alliance against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay fought from 1865 to 1870, with a large majority of its male population killed. |
Germany floats Greek euro 'time-out' without more reforms Posted: 11 Jul 2015 02:19 PM PDT By Tom Körkemeier and Andreas Rinke BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The German government has argued that Greece could take a five-year "time-out" from the euro zone and have some of its debts written off if Athens fails to improve proposals it has made for a bailout. In a paper reviewing an offer of reforms from the Greek government in return for a three-year loan, Finance Ministry officials said the plan lacked "paramount important reform areas" and wrote: "We need a better sustainable solution." The paper, seen by Reuters and first reported by Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, offered "two avenues": either tighter conditions binding the Greek government to its new promises or a temporary exit from the euro. Sources in the ruling left-right coalition in Berlin said the paper was drawn up after discussions among conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel, her centre-left deputy Sigmar Gabriel and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble. |

Yemen's UN humanitarian ceasefire fails to hold Posted: 11 Jul 2015 01:14 PM PDT A UN-proposed truce in Yemen, aimed at delivering desperately needed aid to millions threatened with famine, failed to take hold Saturday as clashes and Saudi-led coalition air strikes persisted. The six-day ceasefire formally went into effect just before midnight Friday, but clashes between Iran-backed Shiite rebels and fighters loyal to exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi hit several areas, while Saudi-led coalition air strikes targeted rebel positions. The United Nations hoped the truce would hold until the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan next Friday, allowing sorely needed aid to reach civilians. |
Attack on Serbia PM mars Srebrenica massacre anniversary Posted: 11 Jul 2015 01:13 PM PDT Srebrenica (Bosnia-Hercegovina) (AFP) - An angry crowd hurling stones and plastic bottles forced Serbia's premier to flee a ceremony Saturday marking the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre of some 8,000 Muslims in Bosnia, Europe's worst atrocity since World War II. Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic had just laid a flower at a monument for the Bosnian Muslim men and boys killed and buried there when the crowd started chanting "Allahu Akbar" (God Is Great) and throwing stones. Vucic, whose country backed Bosnian Serbs during and after the 1990s inter-ethnic war in Bosnia, was among numerous dignitaries, including former US president Bill Clinton, and tens of thousands of people attending the commemoration in the eastern Bosnian town. |

Greek talks eye 25 billion euro bank recap, doubling debt maturities Posted: 11 Jul 2015 12:58 PM PDT Euro zone finance ministers were told on Saturday that some 25 billion of any bailout loan to Greece would be needed to recapitalize banks that are on the verge of collapse, sources close to the discussions said. Among other variables in negotiations on a possible package of Greek reforms in return for new loans, the International Monetary Fund is urging euro zone governments to reschedule Greek debts, with one scenario being a doubling of loan maturities to 60 years from 30 to ease Athens' repayment burden. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras applied this week for a three-year loan from the European Stability Mechanism of 53.5 billion euros. |

Greece faces 'difficult' talks to stay in euro Posted: 11 Jul 2015 12:43 PM PDT Eurozone finance chiefs warned that last-ditch talks Saturday on a bailout deal to stop Greece crashing out of the euro would be "extremely difficult", blaming Athens for a collapse of trust. Hardline Germany led a chorus of scepticism as Eurogroup ministers prepared to give a verdict on leftist Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's new reform plan for a third rescue package worth more than 80 billion euros ($89 billion). "We will have extremely difficult negotiations," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters on his way into the talks in Brussels. |

Bosnian presidency 'condemns' Srebrenica anniversary incident Posted: 11 Jul 2015 12:26 PM PDT Bosnia's presidency on Saturday strongly condemned a stone-throwing attack by an angry mob that forced Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic to flee a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. The tripartite presidency "condemns in the strongest terms and voices a deep regret over today's attack," a statement said. Praising the Serbian premier's attendance at the commemoration of the massacre of some 8,000 Bosnian Muslims males, the presidency called for a swift probe to identify the perpetrators of the attack. |
