Gypsy 'cheat' entry in Spanish dictionary sparks outrage Posted: 29 Oct 2014 04:26 PM PDT An entry in Spain's top dictionary has outraged one of the country's oldest minorities by defining "gypsy" as synonymous with lying and cheating. The offending entry is in the Royal Spanish Academy's annual update to its dictionary, the ultimate authority on the language in Spain and Latin America. One activist, Patricia Caro Maya, said the academy's definition of gypsy "has always had false connotations of stealing and cheating as a cultural characteristic of ours." The academy declined to comment on the issue to AFP, but cited the introduction to its dictionary, which says it takes care to avoid "gratuitously slanted or offensive" definitions. |

Iran wants sanctions lifted before nuclear deal Posted: 29 Oct 2014 03:41 PM PDT Iran wants all Western sanctions to be lifted before striking a deal on its contested nuclear programme by a November deadline, a top official said Wednesday. The six powers in the talks with Iran -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States plus Germany, known as the P5+1 -- have set November 24 as the deadline. The chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the US proposal of a gradual lifting of sanctions was "unacceptable." A Western diplomat close to the negotiations with Iran on Monday said a firm deal by the deadline was highly unlikely, saying Tehran would have to make "significant gestures." |

Egypt starts work on Gaza buffer after bombing Posted: 29 Oct 2014 03:12 PM PDT Egypt began demolishing houses along its border with Gaza on Wednesday to set up a buffer zone to prevent militant infiltration and arms smuggling following a wave of deadly attacks. The move, which will see about 800 homes razed, comes after a suicide bomber killed 30 soldiers in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which borders the Palestinian territory, last Friday. It also comes two days after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi enacted a decree allowing military trials for civilians suspected of attacking state infrastructure, as he promised a tough response to what he called the "existential threat" posed by the militants. The authorities want to establish a 500 metre (yard) wide buffer zone along the 10 kilometre (six mile) long border with Gaza. |

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the country's state-run arms dealer had received an invitation to attend a ceremony on November 14 for the handing over of the first of two Mistral helicopter carriers. |
New Ebola cases slowing in Liberia but too soon to celebrate: WHO Posted: 29 Oct 2014 02:50 PM PDT The rate of new Ebola infections appears to be slowing in hard-hit Liberia, but the crisis is far from over, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. "It appears that the trend is real in Liberia and there may indeed be a slowing of the epidemic there," WHO assistant director-general Bruce Aylward told reporters in Geneva. Aylward added, though, that he was "terrified that the information will be misinterpreted and that people will begin to think Ebola is under control." Later on Wednesday, the WHO is set to publish the latest death toll from the Ebola outbreak that has been ravaging west Africa, with the number of deaths expected to pass the 5,000 mark. |
