Moscow says strikes on Syria army threaten U.S.-Russia ceasefire plan Posted: 18 Sep 2016 01:22 PM PDT By Dmitry Solovyov and Lisa Barrington MOSCOW/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Moscow stepped up its war of words with Washington on Sunday, saying air strikes by a U.S.-led coalition on the Syrian army threatened the implementation of a U.S.-Russian ceasefire plan for Syria and bordered on connivance with Islamic State. The diplomatic dispute heated up on the last day of a seven-day ceasefire marred by a surge of violence as warplanes hit the strategic northern city of Aleppo for the first time since the truce came into effect. On Saturday, the Russian Defence Ministry said U.S. jets had killed more than 60 Syrian soldiers in the eastern Syrian city of Deir al-Zor in four air strikes by two F-16 and two A-10 fighter jets coming from the direction of Iraq. |
Pro-Putin party wins Russian parliamentary election Posted: 18 Sep 2016 03:27 PM PDT By Polina Devitt and Olga Sichkar MOSCOW/UFA, Russia (Reuters) - Allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin comfortably won a parliamentary election, early results showed on Monday, but low turnout suggested a softening of enthusiasm for the ruling elite 18 months before the next presidential election. The ruling United Russia party won 51 percent in Sunday's election, according to a preliminary central election commission tally after a quarter of the votes had been counted. An exit poll also had United Russia as the overwhelming winner. |
Merkel suffers drubbing in Berlin vote due to migrant angst Posted: 18 Sep 2016 09:08 AM PDT Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives suffered their second electoral blow in two weeks on Sunday, with support for her Christian Democrats (CDU) plunging to a post-reunification low in a Berlin state vote due to unease with her migrant policy. The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) polled 11.5 percent, gaining from a popular backlash over Merkel's decision a year ago to keep borders open for refugees, an exit poll by public broadcaster ARD showed. The result means the AfD will enter a 10th state assembly, out of 16 in total. |
U.S., Japan, South Korea ministers discuss tougher measures against North Korea Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:19 PM PDT Foreign ministers for the United States, Japan and South Korea met in New York on Sunday, ahead of U.N. meetings, to discuss stepped-up measures against North Korea and expand collaboration with one another after Pyongyang's fifth and largest nuclear test. The Sept. 9 blast was in defiance of U.N. sanctions that were tightened in March. The meeting between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and their South Korean counterpart, Yun Byung-se, was the first since the latest nuclear test. |
Maduro revels in support from Zimbabwe, Iran as critics decry failed summit Posted: 18 Sep 2016 05:45 PM PDT By Deisy Buitrago and Girish Gupta MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro reveled in support from leftist allies during a summit of a Cold War-era bloc that wrapped up on Sunday, but critics pilloried him for hosting unpopular leaders such as Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe and for failing to draw many world leaders. It appears only around a dozen heads of state from the 120-nation Non-Aligned Movement made it to the meeting held on the Caribbean island of Margarita, just off Venezuela's coast, in a blow for a government keen to bolster its international legitimacy. Maduro, hit by low popularity amid a deep economic crisis, hailed the meeting as a triumph. |
Philippines' Duterte needs six more months for his war on drugs Posted: 18 Sep 2016 09:32 AM PDT By Enrico Dela Cruz MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Sunday he needed six more months for his war on drugs, saying he only realized how bad the country's narcotics problem was after taking office over two months ago. Duterte, a former crime-busting mayor of the southern city of Davao, won the presidency in May promising to suppress crime and wipe out drugs and drug dealers in three to six months. More than 3,500 people - or about 47 per day - have been killed in the past 10 weeks in connection with the illegal drugs trade, nearly two thirds by unknown assailants and the rest in legitimate police operations, according to local police. |

Mourinho ready to go to work after Watford woe Posted: 18 Sep 2016 04:58 PM PDT Jose Mourinho says Manchester United's humiliation at Watford underlines how much work needs to be done to transform his spluttering side into title contenders. Mourinho's men crashed to their third successive defeat on Sunday as Watford's shock 3-1 victory condemned United and their manager to an historically bad day. It was the first time United had lost to Watford in 30 years and the first occasion Mourinho had been beaten in three consecutive matches since 2002 when he was in charge at Porto. |
Spurs feel pace as Pochettino sweats on Kane Posted: 18 Sep 2016 04:58 PM PDT Mauricio Pochettino admitted Tottenham may already be feeling the pace after being left to sweat on an injury to England striker Harry Kane who was carried off after scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory at home to Sunderland. Kane scored his second goal in as many league games but he was taken off on a stretcher late on after a tackle by Papy Djilobodji, with an initial diagnosis of a twisted ankle. Victory lifted Tottenham into third place in the Premier League, their final position last term, to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. |
Sweden holds off Russia in World Cup of Hockey Posted: 18 Sep 2016 04:57 PM PDT Sweden fended off a late comeback bid from Alex Ovechkin's Team Russia to win 2-1 Sunday as each squad opened its account in the World Cup of Hockey at Toronto. Ovechkin thought he had the game-tying goal with 8.2 seconds to play in the third period, but game officials ruled it no goal because he batted the puck into the net with his hand. For Russia, it was a disappointing opening to the two-week, eight-team tournament featuring a wealth of top National Hockey League players. |

The automaker and the union representing its Canadian manufacturing workers have been divided over union demands that GM commit to new vehicle models at its Oshawa, Ontario, plant. Putin's party dominates in Russia parliament vote Posted: 18 Sep 2016 03:54 PM PDT Russia's ruling United Russia party on Sunday cruised to an easy victory in parliamentary polls that could pave the way for President Vladimir Putin to glide to a fourth term in 2018 elections, partial results showed. The ballot for the 450-seat State Duma was smooth sailing for authorities desperate to avoid a repeat of mass protests last time round and eager to increase their dominance as Russia faces the longest economic crisis of Putin's rule. "We can announce already with certainty that the party secured a good result, that it won," Putin said after the vote. |

Already, Arkansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and South Dakota appear to be meeting the CPP's early targets. "We are seeing reductions earlier than we ever expected," U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy said in an interview. |

Iran provisionally agreed earlier this year to buy over 200 jets worth $50 billion at list prices from Airbus and Boeing under an agreement between Tehran and world powers to ease sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear activities. |
Merkel party routed in Berlin polls as right-wing AfD gains Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:29 PM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party suffered a historic loss in Berlin state elections Sunday while the right-wing populist AfD gained fresh support, riding a wave of popular anger over her open-door refugee policy. The anti-Islam Alternative for Germany party won around 14 percent, according to public broadcasters' projections, in the capital which has long prided itself on being a hip, diverse and multicultural city. The strong AfD result, thanks to support especially in the vast tower block districts in Berlin's former communist east, meant it has now won opposition seats in ten of Germany's 16 states, a year ahead of national elections. |
Canada will impose nationwide carbon price: minister Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:24 PM PDT Canada will impose a carbon price on provinces that do not adequately regulate emissions by themselves, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said on Sunday without giving details on how the Liberal government will do so. Speaking on the CTV broadcaster's "Question Period," a national politics talk show, McKenna said the new emissions regime will be in place sometime in October, before a federal-provincial meeting on the matter. Canada's 10 provinces, which enjoy significant jurisdiction over the environment, have been wary of Ottawa's intentions and have said they should be allowed to cut carbon emissions their own way. |
