Migrants protest as Hungarian riot police fires tear gas and water cannon at the border crossing with Serbia in RoszkeBy Maja Zuvela and Krisztina Than SID, Serbia/ROSZKE, Hungary (Reuters) - Hungary on Wednesday detained 29 people including a "terrorist" as migrants demanding to be let through the country's newly shut EU frontier clashed with riot police firing water cannon and tear gas while refugees searched for new ways to enter the bloc. Hungary's decision this week to shut the EU's external border with Serbia was the most forceful attempt yet by a European country to reduce the flood of refugees and economic migrants overwhelming the bloc. As thousands of migrants scattered across the Balkan peninsula tried to reach the EU, Hungary's prime minister said his country planned to put up a fence along parts of its border with Croatia and on the frontier with Romania to stem the flow.

Obama to take tough but tempered line with China's Xi

Tibetan, Chinese, Uighur and American activists rally outside the White House in WashingtonBy Matt Spetalnick, David Brunnstrom and Michael Martina WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) - China's economic powerhouse is slowing, destabilizing global markets. Beijing's neighbors, unnerved over its pursuit of territorial claims, are increasingly cozying up to Washington. It might seem an ideal time for U.S. President Barack Obama to take advantage of Beijing's troubles and get tough when he hosts Chinese leader Xi Jinping for a state visit on Sept. 25.     Obama is expected to press Xi on issues that have strained relations between the two countries, but his approach will be tempered because for better or worse the world's two biggest economies are inextricably bound together.     That will mean a difficult balancing act for Obama.

Children pray at the Father Usera daycare center in HavanaBy Daniel Trotta HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba on Wednesday launched its annual campaign for a United Nations resolution condemning the U.S. economic embargo while the White House and the Vatican added their own pressure on the U.S. Congress to end the 53-year-old sanctions. The Vatican has long opposed the Cold War-era embargo, saying ordinary Cubans suffer most from its effects, and Havana is counting on hearing that message when Pope Francis visits for three nights starting Saturday before continuing on to the United States. Although the pope is expected to note the Vatican's opposition to the embargo during his U.S. trip he will not dwell on the issue so as not to be seen as interfering in U.S. politics and risk it backfiring, a Vatican official said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday it may take more than sanctions to end North Korea's nuclear weapons threat because its isolation from the global marketplace makes U.S. economic pressure less effective than it was on Iran. The American goal in North Korea remains the same, Kerry insisted: A peaceful solution that leads to nuclear disarmament. But he also warned of increasingly "severe consequences" against Pyongyang a day after it declared that it has upgraded and restarted all of its atomic fuel plants — meaning it could potentially make more sophisticated nuclear weapons.
