Erdogan targets more than 50,000 in purge after failed Turkish coup

Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the coup attempt, stirring tensions across the country of 80 million which borders Syria's chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State. Turkey was preparing on Tuesday to make such a request for Fethullah Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania but has a large following in Turkey, a spokesman for Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said. Erdogan's government has accused the 75-year-old Gulen of being the mastermind of Friday's failed military takeover in which at least 232 people were killed.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A tour bus carrying visitors from China burst into flames on a highway near Taiwan's capital on Tuesday, killing all 26 people on board, officials said, in the deadliest incident involving Chinese tourism to the island. The accident took place on the No. 2 national highway in Taoyuan county, south of Taipei, where Taiwan's international airport is located, the county's fire and rescue service said in a statement. It said 24 of those on board were visitors from northeast China's Liaoning province who had been scheduled to fly home on Tuesday afternoon. The others killed were the driver and a tour guide, both Taiwanese.
