U.S. broadens Syria talks after failure of truce deal with Russia Posted: 14 Oct 2016 03:37 PM PDT By Marina Depetris and Alexander Winning LAUSANNE, Switzerland (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will return to Syria talks on Saturday, three weeks after the failure of their painstakingly drafted ceasefire that many saw as the last hope for peace this year. Kerry has pointedly avoided new bilateral negotiations with Lavrov, and his invitation to the Turkish, Saudi, Qatari and Iranian foreign ministers to join them for talks in the Swiss lakeside town of Lausanne will broaden the discussion to include the most powerful backers of Syria's government and rebels. Pressure is rising for a halt to a ferocious, three-week-old Syrian government offensive to capture the rebel-held eastern zone of the city of Aleppo, where the United Nations says 275,000 civilians still live and 8,000 rebels are holding out against Syrian, Russian and Iranian-backed forces. |
U.S. official calls attack on Yemen funeral gathering 'egregious' Posted: 14 Oct 2016 02:06 PM PDT A weekend attack on a funeral gathering in Yemen widely blamed on Saudi-led warplanes was "egregious," a senior U.S. official said on Friday in one of Washington's strongest condemnations of the incident. The White House said it was reviewing its support for the 18-month-old Arab campaign against Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthis after the attack on Saturday, which killed 140 people according to one U.N. estimate and 82 according to the Houthis. The United States has gradually reduced its support for the Saudi-led campaign, in part because of its unhappiness with the hundreds of civilian deaths that have resulted from what rights groups have described as indiscriminate attacks. |
No pay, no expenses, no laws for Venezuela's opposition lawmakers Posted: 14 Oct 2016 01:44 PM PDT Venezuela's opposition lawmakers accuse the socialist government of sabotaging their work after winning a majority in congress last December. The pro-government Supreme Court has blocked all congress' bills from becoming law. Earlier this week, the high court also allowed President Nicolas Maduro to present the 2017 budget without congressional approval. |
Migrants begin new life outside France's 'Jungle' camp Posted: 14 Oct 2016 11:00 AM PDT By Matthias Blamont MERIGNAC, France (Reuters) - In a dank flat in southwestern France, 23-year-old Nasir stares at a living room wall bare except for a list of emergency numbers and contemplates life for his asylum-seeking family outside the migrant camp in Calais that had become home. Nasir volunteered his family for resettlement days before France is expected to begin dismantling the violence-ridden camp in Calais known as the "Jungle", where disease is rife and traffickers prey on individuals desperate to reach Britain. The two-story apartment block in Merignac, a gray suburb on the outskirts of Bordeaux, is one of about 160 so-called reception centers where President Francois Hollande's Socialist government plans to re-house temporarily the Jungle's dwellers. |
Drug kingpin Guzman U.S. extradition set for early 2017: senior official Posted: 14 Oct 2016 11:28 AM PDT Mexico expects to extradite captured drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the United States at the outset of 2017, a top government official said on Friday, despite ongoing appeals by lawyers to block his departure. Guzman, boss of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested by Mexican police in the northern city of Los Mochis in January after breaking out of a maximum security prison through a tunnel dug right into his cell six months earlier. It was Guzman's second jailbreak in less than 15 years, and President Enrique Pena Nieto swiftly pledged to extradite him. |
Berlin bombing suspect radicalized by imams in Germany, brother says Posted: 14 Oct 2016 02:11 PM PDT By Joseph Nasr BERLIN (Reuters) - Berlin bomb suspect Jaber Albakr showed signs of radicalization in Germany, posting jihadi videos online before traveling to the Islamist-controled Syrian city of Idlib earlier this year, his brother told Reuters. Alaa Albakr told Reuters by phone that his brother said he went to Syria to volunteer with emergency rescue workers, but Alaa believes he was radicalized by imams in Berlin who "brainwashed him" into returning to his country for jihad. "This is why we believe he returned to Syria," Alaa told Reuters by phone from the village of Sa'sa' southwest of Damascus. |
Rare tornado hits Oregon as storms bear down on Pacific Northwest Posted: 14 Oct 2016 05:26 PM PDT A small coastal town in Oregon was clobbered on Friday by a rare tornado that ripped roofs from buildings, toppled trees and tore down power lines as the first of two storm systems forecast this weekend unleashed high winds and heavy rain across the Pacific Northwest. The twister left most of Manzanita, a community of some 600 permanent residents in the northwest corner of Oregon, without electricity and more than two dozen homes uninhabitable, though no injuries were reported, City Manager Jerry Taylor said. The tornado was spawned by a major Pacific storm sweeping coastal portions of Oregon and Washington state even as the region braced for harsher weather forecast by the National Weather Service from remnants of a typhoon expected to arrive on Saturday. |
