One woman’s plan to reform a bail system that disadvantages poor defendants Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:18 PM PDT It was over a late-night Chinese meal in New York with her then colleague, now husband, that Robin Steinberg first hit on the idea for a bail fund. Ms. Steinberg and David Feige were both public defenders in the Bronx, a borough of New York, where they saw every day how cash bail hampered clients who couldn't afford to pay to get out of detention. |
Pakistan’s election: a victory for women Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:08 PM PDT Pakistan is one of the world's largest democracies, yet because it also has the second-largest Muslim population, it has long ranked near last in female participation in elections. US homelessness is on the decline Posted: 25 Jul 2018 11:04 AM PDT Homelessness has steadily decreased in the United States over the past decade. Since 2007, the overall number of homeless individuals decreased by 15 percent, while the number of homeless veterans decreased by more than 50 percent. The number of both unsheltered and sheltered homeless vets decreased sharply over the past nine years, with declines of more than 38 percent and 33 percent, respectively. |

One year later, they had adopted two boys from Brazil – and acquired a bitter taste about France and gay rights. France, like nearly two dozen countries in Europe, has passed laws in recent years to allow marriage and adoption for same-sex couples. |
