Iraq insurgents seize oilfields, hit air base as U.S. advisers arrive Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:19 PM PDT By Raheem Salman BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Militants attacked one of Iraq's largest air bases and seized control of several small oilfields on Wednesday as U.S. special forces troops and intelligence analysts arrived to help Iraqi security forces counter a mounting Sunni insurgency. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who is fighting for his job and is under international pressure to create a more inclusive government, said he supported starting the process of forming a new cabinet within a week. He also dismissed the call of mainly Sunni political and religious figures, some with links to armed groups fighting Maliki, for a "national salvation government" that would choose figures to lead the country and, in effect, bypass the election held nearly three months ago. In northern Iraq, the Sunni militants extended a two-week advance that has been led by the hardline Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) but also includes an amalgam of other Sunni groups angered by Maliki's rule. |
West renews Russia sanctions threat as Ukraine ceasefire crumbles Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:10 PM PDT By Adrian Croft and Aleksandar Vasovic BRUSSELS/SLAVIANSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Western powers warned Russia on Wednesday that they could impose new sanctions if Moscow did not do more to defuse the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where a ceasefire between Russian-speaking rebels and government forces appeared to be crumbling. The upper house of Russia's parliament fulfilled a request by President Vladimir Putin to rescind the right to invade Ukraine in defense of its Russian speakers that it had granted him in March. |
At least 21 killed in rush-hour blast in Nigerian capital Posted: 25 Jun 2014 12:54 PM PDT By Camillus Eboh ABUJA (Reuters) - At least 21 people were killed when a suspected bomb tore through a crowded shopping district in the Nigerian capital Abuja during rush hour on Wednesday, police said, adding to the toll of thousands killed in attacks this year. The suspected bomb would be Abuja's third in three months and comes as the Nigerian government and military face rising public anger over their inability to protect citizens from daily gun and bomb attacks across Africa's most populous country. Another suspect was killed by soldiers as he tried to escape on a motorcycle, the spokesman for Nigeria's National Information Centre said. |
Egypt defends itself at U.N. amid outcry over jailing of journalists Posted: 25 Jun 2014 02:41 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Egypt defended its judicial system at the United Nations on Wednesday amid a global outcry over the jailing of al Jazeera journalists, telling diplomats and reporters that it respects the role of the media and does not consider journalism a crime. Diplomats from more than 17 countries, including eight members of the U.N. Security Council, attended the meeting organized by the U.N. Correspondents Association to show solidarity with the three imprisoned Al Jazeera journalists. |
Russia says next Iran atom talks to be marathon, slams U.N. experts Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:05 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia's U.N. envoy on Wednesday said the next round of talks between Iran and six world powers will be a two-week marathon session, while warning a panel of U.N. sanctions experts not to sabotage the final phase of the delicate negotiations. Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told the Security Council that the negotiations are scheduled to run from July 2 to July 15 in Vienna. The long period set aside for the negotiations between Iran and the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany may be an indication both of how difficult it will be to overcome the differences between Tehran and the six - and the parties' determination to get a deal. The stakes are high in the talks resuming on July 2, as the powers seek a negotiated solution to a more-than-decade-long standoff with Iran that has raised fears of a new Middle East war and a regional nuclear arms race. |
U.N. Security Council blacklists Boko Haram leader, splinter group Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:28 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council sanctioned the leader of Nigeria's Boko Haram and a splinter group on Wednesday, the first individual and entity to be designated by the world body since the Islamist militant group was blacklisted, diplomats said. Leader Abubakar Shekau and Boko Haram faction Ansaru will be banned from international travel and their assets frozen under the U.N. al Qaeda sanctions list. Last month, the Security Council al Qaeda sanctions committee blacklisted Boko Haram at the request of Nigeria, following global outrage when the group kidnapped more than 250 girls from a school in remote northeastern Nigeria on April 14. |

Venezuela ruling party suspends leader for echoing criticism: media Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:24 PM PDT By Brian Ellsworth CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's ruling Socialist Party has suspended one of its directors for echoing a former official's recent criticizm over corruption, local media reported on Wednesday, a sign President Nicolas Maduro is facing growing dissent from his own ranks. Hector Navarro said he was disciplined for backing statements by former Planning Minister Jorge Giordani that accused Maduro of failing to stem multibillion-dollar fraud via currency controls, according to media reports. The string of critiques marks a sharp divergence from the 14-year rule of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez, whose insistence on military-style obedience helped maintain discipline within an often unruly coalition. "I've been officially informed that the National Board (which has not met for a month) has decided to send me to the party's Disciplinary Tribunal," Navarro wrote in a message to university activists that was cited by local media. |

With new grip on oil fields, Iraq Kurds unveil plan to ramp up exports Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:17 PM PDT By David Sheppard ARBIL Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq's self-ruling Kurds outlined plans on Wednesday to swiftly ramp up oil exports now that their forces have taken control of Iraq's main northern oilfields, a move that could tear up the settlement holding Iraq together since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Kurdish Natural Resources Minister Ashti Hawrami told Reuters the Kurds had plans to increase their exports eightfold by the end of 2015, including by pumping oil from the fields taken by Kurdish fighters two weeks ago. "We expect to be able to export 1 million bpd by the end of next year, including crude from Kirkuk," he said, although he insisted the Kurds would share the proceeds with Baghdad. "We want to work with Baghdad under the constitution, and they will get their share of the oil they export from Kirkuk." The central government in Iraq firmly opposes Kurdish oil sales, saying they violate the constitution. |

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition but died shortly afterwards, a spokesman for the Benghazi medical centre said. Bouguiguis, a lawyer, played an active part in Libya's 2011 revolution which overthrew the regime of Moamer Kadhafi. |

Korea boss not relying on divine help Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:57 PM PDT South Korea coach Hong Myung-Bo Wednesday said he would not be praying for divine help against Belgium but he still harbours hopes of a miraculous World Cup escape. Hong, who was captain in 2002, insisted Thursday's result was not a foregone conclusion despite South Korea's winless campaign so far and Belgium's star-studded line-up. A goalkeeping howler helped South Korea draw their game with Russia and they were then thrashed 4-2 by Algeria to lie bottom. Belgium are qualified with maximum points. |
U.S. says has fresh Russia sanctions 'ready to go' Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:55 PM PDT The United States said on Wednesday it has fresh sanctions ready to impose on Russia if Moscow does not take steps to de-escalate tensions with Ukraine, including halting the flow of fighters and arms to Ukrainian separatists. A senior U.S. official said on Friday Washington and the European Union had intensified talks about "scalpel" sanctions on Russia's financial, defense and high-tech industries as more Russian military material has flowed into Ukraine. Argentine shot in Brazil bar fight during World Cup Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:51 PM PDT By Angus MacSwan PORTO ALEGRE Brazil (Reuters) - An Argentine fan in Brazil for the World Cup soccer tournament was shot in the leg during a bar fight, security officials said on Wednesday, stoking concerns about possible violence if Argentina meets Brazil in the championship match. Six other Argentine fans were arrested for trying to steal tickets to their national team's match against Nigeria on Wednesday in Porto Alegre, the southernmost World Cup host city. Tens of thousands of Argentines have flooded across Brazil's southern border this month, prompting increased security measures focused on Argentina's notorious hooligans. Brazil has already stopped more than 30 Argentines from entering the country due to their involvement with the violent "barras bravas" fan clubs in their national league. |
