Ukraine defends vote despite unrest, Putin pledges 'respect' Posted: 24 May 2014 02:43 PM PDT By Alastair Macdonald and Sabina Zawadzki KIEV/DONETSK (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin promised that Russia would work with the new Ukrainian administration formed after a presidential election on Sunday that the Kiev government said on Saturday would anchor the ex-Soviet state to the West. The separatists reject an election run by a fascist "junta" in Kiev and national electoral officials said few ballot papers had yet been issued in two eastern regions with over 12 percent of the electorate, implying most there will be denied a vote. Denouncing an "atmosphere of terror" directed against local electoral officials in the east, Europe's OSCE democracy agency pulled out most of the dozens of international monitors it had posted to Donetsk region out of fears for their security. President Putin's verbal olive branch after months of East-West feuding and his annexation of Crimea, came at an economic forum where, having earlier acknowledged U.S. and EU sanctions were hurting the Russian economy, he played down talk of a new Cold War and denied a desire to rebuild Moscow's Soviet empire. |
EU set for election 'Super Sunday,' with far-right vote in spotlight Posted: 24 May 2014 03:06 PM PDT By Luke Baker BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European elections reach their culmination on "Super Sunday" when the remaining 20 of the EU's 28 countries go to the polls, with the vote expected to confirm the dominance of pro-European centrists despite a rise in support for the far-right and left. Germany, France, Spain and Poland are among the major EU member states voting on Sunday, representing the bulk of the 388 million Europeans eligible to cast ballots and elect the 751 deputies to sit in the European Parliament from 2014-2019. After years of economic crisis, rising unemployment and poor growth, many Europeans have come to question the wisdom of ever-closer EU integration and are expected to vote for Eurosceptic parties on the right or left promising radical changes. That would continue the trend of declining participation at every European election since the first direct poll was held in 1979. |
Grenade attacks kill at least two in Djibouti: police Posted: 24 May 2014 01:14 PM PDT By Abdourahim Arteh DJIBOUTI (Reuters) - At least two people were killed by double grenade blasts at a busy restaurant popular with Westerners in Djibouti, police said on Saturday. It was grenades," Colonel Omar Hassan, head of police in Djibouti city, said in an interview. Djibouti has the only U.S. military base in Africa and is an important ally in the U.S.-led fight against militant Islam. Somali troops and AMISOM, comprising troops from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi and Djibouti, drove al Shabaab out of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, in 2011. |
U.S. may act to keep Chinese hackers out of Def Con hacker event Posted: 24 May 2014 02:16 PM PDT By Andrea Shalal and Jim Finkle DENVER/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Washington is considering using visa restrictions to prevent Chinese nationals from attending popular summer hacking conferences in Las Vegas as part of a broader effort to curb Chinese cyber espionage, a senior administration official said Saturday. The official said that Washington could use such visa restrictions and other measures to keep Chinese from attending the August Def Con and Black Hat events to maintain pressure on China after the United States this week charged five Chinese military officers with hacking into U.S. companies to steal trade secrets. China has denied the charges, saying they were "made up." Organizers of the two conferences said they knew nothing about any efforts under consideration by Washington, but that they believed limiting participation from China was a bad idea. |
Ecuador's president backs indefinite re-elections, coy about his plans Posted: 24 May 2014 03:35 PM PDT Ecuador's President Rafael Correa on Saturday backed a constitutional change to allow politicians to run indefinitely, potentially paving the way for the leftist himself to seek the top job again in 2017. "Let the Ecuadorean people decide with full freedom the continuity or change of leaders," Correa told Congress on Saturday. "We have to keep adjusting our institutions to (Ecuador's) new reality and not revert to the domination of elites." The measure is poised to easily be approved in Congress, where Correa's Alianza Pais party has a majority. |
Nigeria's Boko Haram kills 28 in three village attacks Posted: 24 May 2014 02:30 PM PDT Suspected Islamist Boko Haram gunmen rampaged through three villages in northern Nigeria, killing 28 people and burning houses to the ground in a pattern of violence that has become almost a daily occurrence, according to police and witnesses. All three attacks happened on Thursday in remote parts of Borno state, the epicenter of Boko Haram's increasingly bloody struggle for an Islamic kingdom in religiously mixed Nigeria. Scores of militants opened fire on residents, killing 20 of them, and burned houses, a police source said. A spate of bombings across north and central Nigeria has killed hundreds, including two in the capital Abuja and one in the central city of Jos on Tuesday that killed 118 people. |

Redknapp relieved as QPR hit promotion jackpot Posted: 24 May 2014 04:38 PM PDT Harry Redknapp admitted he was a relieved man after Bobby Zamora's last-gasp strike fired QPR back into the Premier League and eased the club's precarious financial situation. Zamora's fine finish in stoppage-time was QPR's first and only shot on target and came completely against the run of play after Derby had dominated following the 60th minute dismissal of Hoops midfielder Gary O'Neil. The frenzied celebrations by QPR's Malaysian owner Tony Fernandes, who was drenched in champagne by the time he left the on-pitch party after the final whistle, made it clear how important promotion was for the west London club, who would have been in danger of sinking into financial chaos if they had been condemned to another season in the second tier following their relegation in 2013. In that context, promotion to the Premier League, where QPR will now land a minimum windfall of £80 million, was essential and Redknapp's drained expression when he met the media an hour after Zamora's winner showed the weight of expectation had weighed heavily over the last nine months. |

Three dead as Champions League fans targeted in Nigeria blast Posted: 24 May 2014 04:21 PM PDT Jos (Nigeria) (AFP) - At least three people were killed on Saturday in the central Nigerian city of Jos in an explosion targeting football fans watching the European Champions League final, the authorities said. The blast came just days after a twin car bomb attack ripped through a crowded market in the city, killing 118 and raising fears of a spread of Boko Haram Islamist violence from the restive northeast. "So far, we have three dead, three injured," Chris Olakpe, the commissioner of police for Plateau state, of which Jos is the capital, told AFP. |

U.S. cancels military exercise, visits after Thai coup Posted: 24 May 2014 03:39 PM PDT The United States on Saturday canceled a military training exercise with Thailand, visits by top military officers and a police training program because of the country's military coup. The steps, announced by the U.S. Departments of State and Defense, are intended to show Washington's displeasure with the events in Thailand, whose army chief seized control of the government on Thursday, two days after declaring martial law. The Pentagon said in a statement it had called off its annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, or CARAT, exercise with Thailand, part of a series of events between the U.S. Navy and eight regional navies to help them work together. It also said it had called off a planned June visit to Thailand by U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Harry Harris and canceled an invitation to the Royal Thai Armed Forces commander general to visit the U.S. Pacific Command next month. |

Irish coalition suffers local poll setback as Sinn Fein surges Posted: 24 May 2014 03:34 PM PDT By Padraic Halpin DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's coalition government suffered a bruising setback at local elections on Saturday as the opposition Sinn Fein party made major gains to capitalize on frustration over six years of relentless austerity cuts. Ireland emerged from an international bailout under Prime Minister Enda Kenny's government last year and employment is growing strongly after a long recession, but the economic recovery is not being felt by large numbers of voters. Kenny's Fine Gael party looked set to narrowly remain the largest party in councils, even though midway through the count it was polling at 24 percent versus 36 percent at parliamentary elections three years ago. The surge by Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army, whose anti-austerity policies helped move it into third place in local polls, will pile pressure on the government ahead of one last austerity budget needed to reduce a deficit that is still among the highest in Europe. |

Brussels killings due to 'incitement' against Jews: Netanyahu Posted: 24 May 2014 03:06 PM PDT Israel's premier said late Saturday that the attack at the Brussels Jewish Museum, which left three dead and one badly wounded, was the result of anti-Jewish and Israeli sentiment in Europe. "This act of murder is the result of constant incitement against Jews and their state," Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman joined Netanyahu's sentiment, blaming "anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic incitement expressed in calls to boycott Israeli produce". |
Three people killed in shooting at Brussels Jewish Museum Posted: 24 May 2014 02:57 PM PDT By Justyna Pawlak and Robert-Jan Bartunek BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Two women and a man were killed and one person seriously injured during a shooting at the Jewish Museum in central Brussels on Saturday, with Belgian officials saying anti-Semitic motives could not be ruled out. A spokeswoman for Brussels prosecutors office said there was no clear information about the perpetrator, although a fire brigade official said earlier that the shooter had driven up to the museum, gone inside and fired shots. Everything is possible," Ine Van Wymersch told a news conference. "We know that the location, the Jewish Museum in Brussels, makes one think of it being an anti-Semitic attack, but we do not have enough to confirm this is the case." Belgium's interior minister, Joëlle Milquet, was quoted by the RTBF Belgian television station, saying: "It's a shooting ... at the Jewish Museum ... All of this can lead to suspicions of an act of anti-Semitism." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement from his office, strongly condemned the killings. |
Djibouti cafe hit by bomb attack, several casualties reported Posted: 24 May 2014 02:52 PM PDT At least two people were killed late Saturday in a bomb attack on a restaurant popular with Westerners in central Djibouti, official sources said. Djibouti's main ADI news agency said there were several explosions around 8:00pm local time (1700 GMT) and that the area was quickly sealed off by police. Blast rocks central Nigerian city of Jos: relief agency Posted: 24 May 2014 02:44 PM PDT Jos (Nigeria) (AFP) - An explosion rocked the central Nigerian city of Jos on Saturday, the country's main relief agency said, just days after at least 118 people were killed in a twin car bomb attack. "There has been an explosion in Jos," Manzo Ezekiel, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told AFP but said it was not clear what caused the blast nor if there were casualties. Pam Ayuba, spokesman for the Plateau state governor Jonah Jang, said the blast happened on Bauchi Road at about 9:30 pm (2030 GMT) and appeared to target football fans watching the European Champions League final.
