Ukraine defends vote despite unrest, Putin pledges 'respect'

Posted: 24 May 2014 02:43 PM PDT

Election commission officials install ballot boxes at a poling station in KievBy Alastair Macdonald and Sabina Zawadzki KIEV/DONETSK (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin promised that Russia would work with the new Ukrainian administration formed after a presidential election on Sunday that the Kiev government said on Saturday would anchor the ex-Soviet state to the West. The separatists reject an election run by a fascist "junta" in Kiev and national electoral officials said few ballot papers had yet been issued in two eastern regions with over 12 percent of the electorate, implying most there will be denied a vote. Denouncing an "atmosphere of terror" directed against local electoral officials in the east, Europe's OSCE democracy agency pulled out most of the dozens of international monitors it had posted to Donetsk region out of fears for their security. President Putin's verbal olive branch after months of East-West feuding and his annexation of Crimea, came at an economic forum where, having earlier acknowledged U.S. and EU sanctions were hurting the Russian economy, he played down talk of a new Cold War and denied a desire to rebuild Moscow's Soviet empire.

EU set for election 'Super Sunday,' with far-right vote in spotlight

People walk in front of visuals promoting the vote for the European elections in front of the European Parliament in BrusselsBy Luke Baker BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European elections reach their culmination on "Super Sunday" when the remaining 20 of the EU's 28 countries go to the polls, with the vote expected to confirm the dominance of pro-European centrists despite a rise in support for the far-right and left. Germany, France, Spain and Poland are among the major EU member states voting on Sunday, representing the bulk of the 388 million Europeans eligible to cast ballots and elect the 751 deputies to sit in the European Parliament from 2014-2019. After years of economic crisis, rising unemployment and poor growth, many Europeans have come to question the wisdom of ever-closer EU integration and are expected to vote for Eurosceptic parties on the right or left promising radical changes. That would continue the trend of declining participation at every European election since the first direct poll was held in 1979.

Illustration file picture shows a man typing on a computer keyboard in WarsawBy Andrea Shalal and Jim Finkle DENVER/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Washington is considering using visa restrictions to prevent Chinese nationals from attending popular summer hacking conferences in Las Vegas as part of a broader effort to curb Chinese cyber espionage, a senior administration official said Saturday. The official said that Washington could use such visa restrictions and other measures to keep Chinese from attending the August Def Con and Black Hat events to maintain pressure on China after the United States this week charged five Chinese military officers with hacking into U.S. companies to steal trade secrets. China has denied the charges, saying they were "made up." Organizers of the two conferences said they knew nothing about any efforts under consideration by Washington, but that they believed limiting participation from China was a bad idea.

Redknapp relieved as QPR hit promotion jackpot

Posted: 24 May 2014 04:38 PM PDT

QPR's English striker Bobby Zamora scores the winning goal during the English Championship Play Off final football match between Derby County and Queens Park Rangers at Wembley Stadium in London on May 24, 2014Harry Redknapp admitted he was a relieved man after Bobby Zamora's last-gasp strike fired QPR back into the Premier League and eased the club's precarious financial situation. Zamora's fine finish in stoppage-time was QPR's first and only shot on target and came completely against the run of play after Derby had dominated following the 60th minute dismissal of Hoops midfielder Gary O'Neil. The frenzied celebrations by QPR's Malaysian owner Tony Fernandes, who was drenched in champagne by the time he left the on-pitch party after the final whistle, made it clear how important promotion was for the west London club, who would have been in danger of sinking into financial chaos if they had been condemned to another season in the second tier following their relegation in 2013. In that context, promotion to the Premier League, where QPR will now land a minimum windfall of £80 million, was essential and Redknapp's drained expression when he met the media an hour after Zamora's winner showed the weight of expectation had weighed heavily over the last nine months.

U.S. cancels military exercise, visits after Thai coup

Posted: 24 May 2014 03:39 PM PDT

The United States on Saturday canceled a military training exercise with Thailand, visits by top military officers and a police training program because of the country's military coup. The steps, announced by the U.S. Departments of State and Defense, are intended to show Washington's displeasure with the events in Thailand, whose army chief seized control of the government on Thursday, two days after declaring martial law. The Pentagon said in a statement it had called off its annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, or CARAT, exercise with Thailand, part of a series of events between the U.S. Navy and eight regional navies to help them work together. It also said it had called off a planned June visit to Thailand by U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Harry Harris and canceled an invitation to the Royal Thai Armed Forces commander general to visit the U.S. Pacific Command next month.

Irish coalition suffers local poll setback as Sinn Fein surges

Posted: 24 May 2014 03:34 PM PDT

By Padraic Halpin DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's coalition government suffered a bruising setback at local elections on Saturday as the opposition Sinn Fein party made major gains to capitalize on frustration over six years of relentless austerity cuts. Ireland emerged from an international bailout under Prime Minister Enda Kenny's government last year and employment is growing strongly after a long recession, but the economic recovery is not being felt by large numbers of voters. Kenny's Fine Gael party looked set to narrowly remain the largest party in councils, even though midway through the count it was polling at 24 percent versus 36 percent at parliamentary elections three years ago. The surge by Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army, whose anti-austerity policies helped move it into third place in local polls, will pile pressure on the government ahead of one last austerity budget needed to reduce a deficit that is still among the highest in Europe.
