Drowned refugee boys buried in Syria; crackdown crumbles in Hungary Posted: 04 Sep 2015 01:28 PM PDT By Rodi Said and Krisztina Than KOBANI, Syria/ROSZKE, Hungary (Reuters) - - A Syrian father on Friday buried his wife and two little boys, drowned as they tried to flee to Europe, while hundreds of migrants fled from a detention camp and escaped a train stranded under police siege in Hungary. Hungary's hardline leader said Europeans could end up a minority on their own continent as a crackdown appeared to crumble in his own country, the main entry point for tens of thousands of refugees and migrants reaching the EU by land over the Balkan peninsula. Hungary has canceled all trains to western Europe to prevent migrants from traveling on and seeking sanctuary in richer countries north and west. |
Saudi Arabia satisfied with Obama's assurances on Iran deal Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:03 PM PDT By Yeganeh Torbati and Julia Edwards WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia is satisfied with assurances from U.S. President Barack Obama about the Iran nuclear deal and believes the agreement will contribute to security and stability in the Middle East, a senior Saudi official said on Friday. Saudi King Salman met with Obama at the White House on Friday to seek more support in countering Iran, as the Obama administration aimed to use the visit to shore up relations after a period of tensions. The visit is the king's first to the United States since ascending to the throne in January 2015, and comes after the United States agreed to a nuclear deal with Iran in July. |
Buses take migrants west to Austria; Hungarian crackdown crumbles Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:24 PM PDT By Krisztina Than and Sandor Peto BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Long lines of buses left Budapest on Saturday packed with migrants bound for Austria, which said it had agreed with Germany to let them in as Hungary gave in to crowds, including Syrian refugees, that had set out on foot for western Europe. Hungary's right-wing government said around 100 buses would pick up thousands of migrants camped in front of Budapest's main railway terminus and another 1,200 striding down the main highway to Vienna led by a one-legged Syrian refugee and chanting "Germany, Germany!" Austria said they would be granted entry, regardless of European Union rules. |
Merkel says Germany can cope with refugees without raising taxes Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:08 PM PDT Germany can cope with a record-breaking influx of refugees and migrants this year without raising taxes and without jeopardizing its goal of a balanced budget, Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a newspaper interview published on Saturday. With relatively liberal asylum laws and generous benefits, Germany is the EU's biggest recipient of people fleeing war in the Middle East and economic migrants from southeastern Europe. |
Guatemala's president quits, jailed pending hearing on corruption charges Posted: 03 Sep 2015 08:03 PM PDT By Alexandra Alper and Sofia Menchu GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Guatemala's Otto Perez resigned as president and was jailed on Thursday while a judge weighs charging him in a corruption scandal that gutted his government and plunged the country into a political crisis days before a presidential election. Former vice president Alejandro Maldonado was sworn in as president to fill out the remaining months of Perez's term. "I am going to respect due process and face this," Perez told reporters after a court hearing and before he was escorted away to jail because he was deemed a flight risk. |

For example, there is a number of Iranians in prison here (in the United States) Definitely for matters of this sort, one can come up with solutions. |

Top Asian News at 11:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:32 PM PDT BANGKOK (AP) — A foreign suspect arrested at the border near Cambodia is unlikely to be the yellow-shirted man seen in security videos and suspected of planting a deadly bomb at a Bangkok shrine, but is definitely a conspirator, police said Friday. The apparent ruling out of the suspect — identified as Mieraili Yusufu or Yusufu Meerailee — as the main perpetrator suggests that the person who bombed the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok on Aug. 17 could still be at large despite two arrests and the naming of seven other suspects in recent days. |
Syria car bombs kill 26, including anti-regime Druze cleric: monitor Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:31 PM PDT A prominent Druze cleric known for criticising Syria's regime and Islamists was assassinated in a car bomb attack that killed 25 others and sparked riots outside the city of Sweida on Friday, a monitor said. ConocoPhillips signals conditional support for U.N. climate deal Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:22 PM PDT By Valerie Volcovici WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Oil and gas producer ConocoPhillips on Friday said it would support a UN climate change agreement if it met its own policy principles, including creating a "level playing among energy sources and between countries." The comments by the Houston-based company were a clarification of its position on the proposed UN agreement after it earlier in the week answered 'yes' to a question in a climate change survey that asked whether it backed a 2015 UN accord. The company's partial endorsement comes as pressure grows on U.S. oil majors to follow the lead of European counterparts who backed the UN climate negotiation process and called for a global carbon pricing system to tackle carbon emissions. |
Taylor takes Watson send-off as compliment Posted: 04 Sep 2015 04:19 PM PDT James Taylor may have got out when well set during the first one-day international against Australia but the way in which Shane Watson bade him farewell from the crease has encouraged the diminutive England batsman. Taylor fell for 49 in Southampton on Thursday, his exit sparking the end of England's hopes of chasing down a target of 306 in a match Australia eventually won by 59 runs to go 1-0 up in the five-match series ahead of Saturday's encounter at Lord's. The way Watson, who towered over the departing batsman, suggested he had somehow been personally insulted by Taylor's attempt to play a shot that has become a staple of limited overs cricket. |

Hungary lays on buses for refugees walking to Austria Posted: 04 Sep 2015 03:43 PM PDT Hungary late Friday laid on buses to ferry hundreds of desperate refugees who had set off on foot for the Austrian border after being stranded for days in Budapest's main railway station. With tensions growing across a divided EU, the human cost of the refugee crisis was underlined as the father of Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi, whose drowning shocked the world, buried his family in their war-torn hometown. Germany urged an end to "recriminations" as Britain said it would take in thousands more Syrian refugees -- but only directly from camps, not those already in overstretched Hungary, Greece and Italy who are demanding their EU partners do more to help. |

Salman's inaugural visit as king -- originally scheduled for May and canceled by Riyadh -- had been billed as a way of putting relations back on a more stable footing. |
