Russian jet broke up in mid air, too early for conclusions, official says Posted: 01 Nov 2015 01:51 PM PST By Lin Noueihed, Ahmed Aboulenein and Alexander Winning CAIRO/MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian airliner that crashed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula broke up in mid-air, an official of a Moscow-based aviation agency said on Sunday after visiting the disaster site, but stressed it was too early to draw conclusions from this. Russian authorities also ordered Kogalymavia airline, operator of the Airbus A321 which came down on Saturday killing all 224 people on board, not to fly its jets of the same model until the causes of the crash are known. The jet, which Kogalymavia flew under the brand name Metrojet, was carrying holidaymakers from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg when it crashed into a mountainous area of central Sinai shortly after losing radar contact near cruising altitude. |
Turkey returns to single-party rule in boost for Erdogan Posted: 01 Nov 2015 03:38 PM PST By Ercan Gurses and Orhan Coskun ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's Islamist-rooted AK Party swept to an unexpected victory in elections on Sunday, returning the country to single-party rule in an outcome that will boost the power of President Tayyip Erdogan but may sharpen deep social divisions. Erdogan said the outcome was a vote for stability, and a message to Kurdish insurgents in the country's restive southeast that violence could not coexist with democracy. Prime Minister and AKP leader Ahmet Davutoglu tweeted simply "Elhamdulillah" (Thanks be to god), before emerging from his family home in the central Anatolian city of Konya to briefly address crowds of cheering supporters. |
Islamic State takes Syrian town as fighting looks set to intensify Posted: 01 Nov 2015 11:45 AM PST By John Davison and Tom Perry BEIRUT (Reuters) - Islamic State fighters drove Syrian government forces from a western town on Sunday, a monitoring group reported, as fighting escalated despite a flurry of diplomatic activity and talks between regional rivals. Syrian parties to the multi-sided conflict said they saw no end to fighting between rebels and the government despite talks in Vienna on Friday that included Iran for the first time. Iran's supreme leader meanwhile said elections should be held to end the war, echoing a proposal by Russia that has been dismissed by President Bashar al-Assad's opponents as a ruse by his allies to keep him in power. |
In Central Asia, Kerry raises rights but tempers public criticism Posted: 01 Nov 2015 12:08 PM PST By Matt Spetalnick SAMARKAND, Uzbekistan (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday met Uzbekistan's autocratic ruler and officials from other Central Asian states accused of being among the world's worst human rights offenders. Kerry was in Samarkand to meet his five Central Asian counterparts and reassure them of continued U.S. engagement in the strategic region. On the fringes of that meeting, he spoke to Uzbek President Islam Karimov, who has ruled Uzbekistan for a quarter of a century and is often criticized internationally for heading a repressive government. |
Merkel's conservatives align refugee policy but coalition still at odds Posted: 01 Nov 2015 12:04 PM PST By Paul Carrel BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel failed on Sunday to fully resolve differences within her ruling coalition over how to deal with the huge refugee influx, leaving open a row that has rocked her government. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert described talks between the three party leaders as "constructive", but said they would meet again on Thursday. Germany, Europe's biggest economy and long a magnet for migrants, expects between 800,000 and a million asylum seekers to arrive this year, twice as many as in any previous year, and far more than in any other European Union country. |
Al Qaeda chief urges militant unity against Russia in Syria Posted: 01 Nov 2015 01:37 PM PST Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri called on Muslim supporters to band together to confront the threat from the West and Russia in Syria and Iraq, the latest recording suggesting greater unity between al Qaeda and Islamic State. "The Americans, Russians, Iranians, Alawites, and Hezbollah are coordinating their war against us -- are we not capable of stopping the fighting amongst ourselves so we can direct all our efforts against them?" Zawahri said in an audio recording released on the Internet on Sunday. It was not clear when the recording was made but references to Russian aggression suggest it was made after Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, launched air raids against opposition groups and Islamic State in Syria on Sept. 30. |

Joy and anguish greet AKP win in Turkey vote Posted: 01 Nov 2015 01:49 PM PST Turkey's Justice and Development Party (AKP) was celebrating "victory day" on Sunday but many greeted the surprise result with dismay -- and deep disquiet about what may be ahead for the restive country. Violence also erupted briefly in the main Kurdish city of Diyarbakir after it became clear that the AKP had clawed back the parliamentary majority it lost in another election just five months ago. Analysts say the decisive result may give the AKP and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a clear mandate to pursue its military campaign against Kurdish rebels and what critics say are increasingly authoritarian policies. |
