Thai army detains former PM Yingluck a day after coup Posted: 23 May 2014 03:44 PM PDT By Amy Sawitta Lefevre and Pracha Hariraksapitak BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's military rulers detained former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday, a senior officer said, after summoning her for talks a day after the army overthrew her caretaker government in a coup. As the army moved to consolidate its grip on the country, its chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, set out his plans for the country, saying reforms were needed before an election. Prayuth launched his coup after rival factions refused to give ground in a struggle for power between the royalist establishment and Yingluck's populist government that had raised fears of serious violence and damaged the economy. "We have detained Yingluck, her sister and brother-in-law," a senior military officer told Reuters. |
Armed clashes in east as Ukraine counts down to election Posted: 23 May 2014 12:50 PM PDT By Richard Balmforth and Sabina Zawadzki KIEV/KARLOVKA, Ukraine (Reuters) - Armed pro-Russian separatists and a Ukrainian militia group clashed in the east of Ukraine on Friday, leaving at least two dead and heightening tension before a presidential election called to draw a line under six months of bloody upheaval. Kiev's pro-Western leaders hope Sunday's poll will stabilize the former Soviet republic after street protests toppled Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovich and pro-Russian separatists responded by seizing Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine. European leaders will consider steps against Russia on Tuesday if they decide Moscow has hampered the election, ranging from restrictions on luxury goods imports to an oil and gas ban, although some are wary due to close trade ties. |
Suspected suicide blast hits heart of Pakistani capital: police Posted: 23 May 2014 03:48 PM PDT A bomb explosion hit the heart of the Pakistani capital on Saturday morning and police said it was caused by a suspected suicide bomber whose vest may have detonated prematurely. The suspected bomber was in critical condition after the blast at a popular complex of shops in Islamabad but no one else was wounded, a senior policeman at the scene told Reuters. The blast came after a week when Pakistani military jets pounded suspected militant hideouts. Islamabad has been relatively peaceful in recent years, but in the past few months it was hit by an attack on the district court and a bombing at a vegetable market that killed 22 and wounded scores of others. |
Pope to start delicate Middle East trip in Jordan Posted: 23 May 2014 03:11 PM PDT By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Pope Francis arrives in Jordan on Saturday to start an intense three-day trip to the Middle East, bringing hope to the dwindling Christian population and an appeal to members of all religions to work together for peace. "This is not a protocol visit," Patriarch Louis Sako, Iraq's senior Churchman, told reporters in Amman on the eve of the visit. The Christian population has been declining steadily across the Middle East for generations. In Israel and the occupied West Bank, more Palestinian Christians are looking to leave, blaming Israel for withering their economic prospects and hobbling their freedom of movement. |
Vote will force British PM to get tougher with EU, UKIP party leader says Posted: 23 May 2014 11:16 AM PDT By Kylie MacLellan BASILDON, England (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron will be forced to step up his drive to claw back powers from the European Union to head off a challenge to his leadership after losing votes to the anti-EU UK Independence Party, its leader Nigel Farage said. Cameron has promised to give Britons a vote on EU membership by the end of 2017 if re-elected in a national vote next year, in part because of the dramatic rise of Farage's UKIP party which has transformed British politics by tapping into popular discontent about immigration levels and established politicians. UKIP wants Britain to leave the EU immediately, arguing it will be more democratic and prosperous outside the bloc and be able to stem what it regards as an unsustainable flow of immigrants from EU states such as Romania and Bulgaria. Farage, whose party is likely to have made significant gains in European elections after a strong result in a local vote, said UKIP's electoral success meant Cameron would now have to become even tougher on Europe to counter a probable challenge from inside his own Conservative party. |
Mali Tuareg separatists accept ceasefire agreement Posted: 23 May 2014 01:39 PM PDT By Tiemoko Diallo BAMAKO (Reuters) - Tuareg separatist groups in Mali on Friday accepted a ceasefire agreement with the government following clashes this week that threatened to plunged the country back into war. The agreement was reached following a meeting between the chairman of the African Union and separatist groups in northern Mali to discuss a permanent truce and the resumption of talks between the rebels and the government in Bamako. Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and United Nations special representative in Mali Albert Koenders held talks for more than four hours with the three main rebel groups and local Tuareg traditional leaders in an effort to also revive peace negotiations between the two sides. Mahamadou Camara, Mali's communication minister, said on Friday that President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita did not give the order for the army's failed attempt to retake Kidal. |

The 11-strong jury visited the Hillsborough ground in Sheffield, northern England, where Liverpool fans were crushed to death on a terrace in Britain's worst sporting disaster. Listening through wireless headphones, the jurors were guided by Lord Justice John Goldring, the coroner presiding over the inquests, to some of the key locations around the stadium, home to second-tier side Sheffield Wednesday. The reports could not be confirmed by independent sources, including the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group. "Kafr Zita in Hama province was hit on Thursday with barrel bombs (dropped from helicopters) that were laden with chlorine gas," according to an activist in the Syrian Revolutionaries Union reached by AFP. Missing British yacht spotted, no sign of crew or life raft Posted: 23 May 2014 03:23 PM PDT (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy helicopter crew on Friday spotted a British yacht that went missing a week ago but found no signs of its four crew members, leaving a midnight deadline for suspending searches for the men unchanged, officials said. On Friday, a Navy search crew discovered the overturned vessel about 1,000 miles off the Massachusetts coast, but they detected no sign of the crew, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement. "The ability to locate that overturned hull, but still not be able to find a life raft is indicative of how unlikely it is that the life raft is still out there," said Lieutenant Joe Klinker, a spokesman for the Coast Guard's 1st District, which oversees Massachusetts waters. |

Long-serving Ameobi to leave Newcastle Posted: 23 May 2014 03:02 PM PDT Nigeria striker Shola Ameobi is to leave Newcastle after 14 years with the Premier League club. Ameobi's current contract expires imminently and after discussions with Magpies boss Alan Pardew, he has decided to bring down the curtain on his long spell at St James' Park. The 32-year-old was handed his senior debut by Bobby Robson as a teenager, but often struggled to establish himself in the starting line-up, with a succession of managers preferring to use their own signings instead of the youth team product. Ameobi, whose younger brother Sammy remains a member of Newcastle's squad, made 397 senior appearances, 178 of them as a substitute, and scored 79 goals. |

Potgieter stars as Bulls batter Brumbies Posted: 23 May 2014 02:31 PM PDT Jacques-Louis Potgieter kicked 22 points as Northern Bulls kept alive hopes of reaching the Super 15 play-offs with a bonus-point 44-23 home triumph over Brumbies Friday. However, the near-invincibility of the Pretoria franchise at Loftus Versfeld stadium has not been matched on the road and six losses could yet deprive the Bulls of a knockout-stage slot. Bulls had the edge in the line-outs and scrums and at the breakdowns and showed flair and strength on attack while defending superbly. A comprehensive defeat completed a miserable day for the Brumbies, who slipped from second to fourth and surrendered top place in the Australian conference to the Waratahs. |
Russia could accept Ukraine vote by working with new government: U.S. Posted: 23 May 2014 02:30 PM PDT The Kremlin should show it accepts the outcome of Sunday's election in Ukraine by working with the new government and whoever is elected Ukraine's next president, the United States said on Friday. In a speech in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he wants better ties with the West and indicated he would accept the outcome of Ukraine's presidential poll. "We will treat the choice of the Ukrainian people with respect," Putin told foreign and Russian businessmen when asked whether Russia will recognize the legitimacy of Sunday's election. Both the White House and State Department were unconvinced by Putin's words. |
