GOP Deny, Downplay Questions About Russian Bounty Scandal Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:23 PM PDT One of the few remaining areas of broad bipartisan consensus on Capitol Hill has been a tough policy toward Russia— a topic that frequently creates a stark contrast to President Trump, who has maintained personally warm ties to its leader, Vladimir Putin, and has generally followed behind Congress on Russia counter-measures.But the cognitive dissonance between those things proved increasingly difficult to square on Tuesday for members of the GOP after reporting in the New York Times detailed that Trump was briefed on a Russian effort to place bounties on U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The report said that Trump was given response options in March but had not decided on one, instead appearing to let the issue fade.Senate Republicans, who have shown a willingness to break with the president on foreign policy and on Russia in particular, responded to the news on Tuesday with a range of responses—skepticism, brush-asides, diatribes against the media and leakers—but few seemed to treat the story as especially legitimate or worthy of all the fuss, or as a red flag regarding Trump's posture toward Moscow. "I think it's fairly safe to say that a lot of the information in the New York Times article was completely false," said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), a Trump ally who went to the White House on Tuesday morning for a briefing on the government's intelligence surrounding the bounties. "Whether this should have been highlighted to the President, I certainly understand why it wasn't. Listen, the president's got a big job. He can't be made aware of every piece of unverified intelligence, okay?" Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) went a step further. "I think it's pretty well documented that the article in The New York Times was written in a way to try to embarrass the Republicans in Congress, and I think it's pretty well documented that The New York Times hates Republicans," he told reporters. "And so I'd rather wait, and get all the facts." On the other end of the GOP spectrum were other lawmakers who hadn't yet seen the intelligence but acknowledged that, if the Russians actually were enticing Taliban soldiers to kill U.S. troops with bounties, it would in fact be a big deal. "If it happened, it's very serious," said Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), who added that it would certainly be warranted for Congress to consider additional sanctions.A group of House Democrats arriving at the Capitol from a White House briefing on Tuesday might as well have come from another universe. "Nothing in the briefing we just received led me to believe it's a hoax," said Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the number two House Democrat, referring to Trump's own assertion on the intel. "There may be different judgments as to the level of credibility… there was no assertion that the information we had was a hoax."The discrepancy in those reactions figures to be a wrench in Congress' ability to respond to what amounts to a shocking account of a Russian effort to target U.S. military personnel and one that would, in any other circumstance, likely prompt a severe and bipartisan response from Capitol Hill. While Democratic leaders push for additional briefings and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) vows to investigate the matter, some Republicans threw cold water on the idea of picking up the thread at all. "This is Democrats and the press. Again, the New York Times article, a lot of that is simply false—it's a false leak, okay?" said Johnson, when asked by The Daily Beast if he wanted Congress to probe the intelligence further. "You're making a mountain out of a molehill here."Indeed, some Senate Republicans, echoing language from White House officials, cast the real problem from the Times story as leaking from the administration. "I think the reporting was absolutely inaccurate," said Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), who went to the White House on Tuesday morning. Asked if she wanted to see Congress investigate further, Ernst responded, "I think we need to know where the leaks are coming from."The GOP-led Senate has voted to approve bipartisan sanctions on Russia on several occasions in Trump's presidency, including as a direct response to its efforts to meddle in the 2016 U.S. election. In January 2019, 11 Senate Republicans broke with their party to vote with Democrats on a measure to block the Trump administration from easing sanctions on Russian companies linked to Oleg Deripaska, an oligarch and Putin ally. The measure didn't reach the 60-vote threshold required to pass, but the message was sent.Democrats said on Tuesday that placing bounties on U.S. soldiers would almost certainly justify a similar, if not tougher, response. Schiff said that Russia, as a starter, should not be invited back into the G7 group of leading economies due to this news. "We should be considering what sanctions are appropriate to further deter Russia's malign activities," said Schiff, "not further ingratiating Russia into the community of civilized nations."On that score, the Senate GOP leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY), agreed. Asked on Tuesday if Russia should be invited back into the G7, he responded "absolutely not."Range of opinion aside, it seems Congress will probe the Russia bounty intelligence, and any possible consequences, behind closed doors, at least for now. Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, for example, are slated to receive a private briefing from intelligence officials on the Russia bounty issue in the coming days.Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who is the acting chair of the panel, declined to comment on the specifics of the Times report, but told reporters it's a "well established fact" that U.S. troops face threats from forces acting as proxies for other adversaries. But, said Rubio, "I think almost every report on reported intelligence information is inaccurate, not because reporters are wrong, but because it misunderstands the purpose of intelligence products. There's a big difference between analysis and raw intelligence, and it's a point that I think is often missed."However, the senator added, "you've never had to convince me to sanction Vladimir Putin… there's no shortage of reasons why we should study more sanctions and more measures to punish 2016 and all over the world to this day."Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Security Council trying again for first COVID-19 resolution Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:41 PM PDT The U.N. Security Council is trying again to reach agreement on its first resolution on COVID-19 since the coronavirus started circling the global in February, after a lengthy dispute between the U.S. and China over mentioning the World Health Organization. A revised draft resolution by France and China was submitted for a vote Tuesday and the result is expected to be announced on Wednesday. The draft resolution backs Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' March 23 call for global cease-fires to tackle the pandemic, and demands an "immediate cessation of hostilities" in all conflicts on its agenda including Syria, Yemen, Libya, South Sudan and Congo. |
High court sparks new battle over church-state separation Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:07 PM PDT The Supreme Court elated religious freedom advocates and alarmed secular groups with its Tuesday ruling on public funding for religious education, a decision whose long-term effect on the separation of church and state remains to be seen. In Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, the high court ruled 5-4 that states must give religious schools the same access to public funding that other private schools receive, preserving a Montana scholarship program that had largely benefited students at religious institutions. |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT Donald Trump has been accused of using Oval Office phone calls to "humiliate and bully" world leaders including German chancellor Angela Merkel and ex-British prime minister Theresa May while pandering to authoritarians like Russian president Vladimir Putin and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan.A damning article by veteran reporter Carl Bernstein quotes sources describing Trump as "delusional" and jeopardising America's national security and place on the global stage by surrendering political advantage to Putin, who is likened to "a chess grandmaster" making short work of "an occasional player of checkers". |
Calls for UN probe of China forced birth control on Uighurs Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:47 PM PDT Politicians around the world have called for a United Nations probe into a Chinese government birth control campaign targeting largely Muslim minorities in the far western region of Xinjiang, even as Beijing said it treats all ethnicities equally under the law. The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, a group of European, Australian, North American, and Japanese politicians from across the political spectrum, demanded an independent U.N. investigation. |
Trump views US troops as disposable – the Russian bounty scandal makes that clear Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:36 PM PDT Time and again, the president has failed to protect military personnel. For Trump, he always comes first, no matter who diesDonald Trump likes to suggest he has got the back of US soldiers battling America's foes around the world. It was a big theme of his 2016 campaign and his West Point speech earlier this month. So great was his boundless care for America's fighting men and women, he said, that he would halt the endless, costly foreign wars prosecuted by his predecessors – and bring them home.Recent reports that Trump ignored an official intelligence finding warning that a covert Russian GRU military unit had placed bounties on the heads of American and British soldiers in Afghanistan give the lie to that particularly cynical piece of bluster.Trump does not deny such an intelligence finding was presented in February, or possibly even earlier. When asked why he had not acted on it to save lives, the White House first claimed the intelligence was weak and inconclusive. When that was rebutted, Trump claimed he was not told about it. So which is it?Many suspect Trump was intent on appeasing Vladimir Putin, his sinister chum in the Kremlin, who the former British MI6 spy Christopher Steele alleges has some kind of personal or financial hold on the president . Maybe it's simpler: he just wasn't paying attention when his NSC intelligence officers briefed him.Either way, Trump failed in his duty as commander-in-chief to protect military personnel serving their country in Afghanistan, and who were placed in harm's way in a conflict that, despite his promises, he has failed to end. It's well known that Trump never personally served in the military at all, having dodged the Vietnam era draft with some special pleading about bone spurs in his feet. It's also the case that the Afghan scandal is by no means the first time he has let America's soldiers down. When Trump decided on a whim last year to pull American ground forces out of north-eastern Syria, where they were leading the anti-Isis counter-terrorism campaign, he gave no thought to the safety of troops suddenly left exposed and out in the open. He gave no thought to the consequences for America's loyal Kurdish allies or, for example, British special forces deployed alongside in the desert.Trump claimed to have pulled off a great strategic masterstroke. In fact, he was once again submitting to the will of Putin, the main backer of Syria's dictatorship, who wanted, and subsequently got, the US out of the way. Trump also cravenly caved in to another fellow bully, Turkey's bellicose leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was pursuing a vendetta against the Kurds. It was no thanks to Trump that US forces avoided significant losses during that chaotic, still incomplete withdrawal. Earlier this year, however, they were not so lucky. Infuriated by Trump's reckless assassination of the Iranian general, Qassem Suleimani, Tehran's leaders struck back in January, launching missiles at US bases in Iraq.Trump initially claimed that the Iranian strikes had not killed or injured any US personnel. Apparently scared of being blamed for causing an all-out war, Trump played down the attack, saying the soldiers "had headaches and a couple of other things". In truth, the Pentagon later confirmed, 50 service-people were hurt, with some suffering potentially life-changing traumatic brain injuries. The Veterans of Foreign Wars are still waiting for the presidential apology they subsequently demanded.Trump's cavalier attitude to armed forces' lives, constitutional duties and honorable traditions was also seen in his neglectful response to the Covid-19 emergency that struck the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. It was seen in his Bible stunt in Lafayette Square during the George Floyd protests, when he tried to co-opt the military. And seen again at West Point this month, when he used cadets as extras in his re-election bid. Most lethal of all, of course, is Trump's gross mishandling of the "war" on the pandemic on the home front, which has contributed directly and indirectly to the loss of more than 125,000 civilian lives.Trump's failure to act in response to Russia's Afghan bounty plot confirmed what was already plain to see. Trump uses the US military, just as he uses almost everyone else, as a disposable prop in his own ongoing, self-glorifying, slightly unhinged personal narrative of superior greatness. For Trump, Trump always comes first, no matter who dies. |
Coronavirus' spread in GOP territory, explained in 6 charts Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:27 PM PDT Coronavirus first spread in the United States as a mostly coastal and big-city scourge, sparing many rural areas, small towns and even small cities. Translated into U.S. political geography: The virus hit Democratic areas first. States that President Donald Trump won in the 2016 election account for about 75% of the new cases, a trend that has accelerated since the end of May. Counties that voted for Trump in 2016 have seen cases and deaths rising — now seeing an impact nearly even with counties that voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton. |
Republicans, with exception of Trump, now push mask-wearing Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:24 PM PDT In Republican circles -- with the notable exception of the man who leads the party -- the debate about masks is over: It's time to put one on. As a surge of infections hammers the South and West, GOP officials are pushing back against the notion that masks are about politics, as President Donald Trump suggests, and telling Americans they can help save lives. Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, on Tuesday bluntly called on Trump to start wearing a mask, at least some of the time, to set a good example. |
Trump's ties to Putin under fresh scrutiny in wake of Russia bounty reports Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:01 PM PDT * Russia allegedly paid bounties for deaths of US soldiers * Democrats ask: what did the president know – and when? * US politics – live coverageDonald Trump is facing renewed questions over his relationship with Vladimir Putin after reports that he was briefed in writing in February that Russia paid bounties for the deaths of US soldiers in Afghanistan. After a meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Democratic members of Congress insisted the president must at least have been aware of the allegation against Moscow, yet failed to act."Based on what we heard today, it was information that a) the president should have known about and b) based on what we were told today, he did," Adam Smith, chairman of the House armed services committee, told reporters.Classified US reports suggested a Russian military intelligence unit offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants to kill US and allied forces in Afghanistan, the New York Times reported last week. The April 2019 killing of three US marines after a car rigged with explosives detonated near their vehicles as they returned to Bagram airfield in Afghanistan is seen as one possible result of the programme, which the Kremlin has denied. The damning allegations have revived familiar questions from American political scandals: what did the president know and when did he know it?Trump has long faced scrutiny for his warm relationship with Putin, including a refusal to accept his own intelligence agencies' conclusion that Moscow intervened on his behalf in the 2016 presidential election; calls for Russia to rejoin the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrial nations; and the dispatch of ventilators to Russia to combat the coronavirus pandemic.Trump and Putin spoke by phone six times between 30 March and 1 June – an unusually high number – apparently without the Afghanistan issue being mentioned. On Monday, the Times reported that information on the bounties was included in a daily written report delivered to the president in late February, with one unnamed official specifying 27 February – a date on which Trump hosted controversial celebrity supporters Diamond and Silk at the White House.Separately, the Associated Press said senior officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of the intelligence, and the assessment was included in at least one of Trump's written daily briefings at the time. John Bolton, then national security adviser, told colleagues at the time he briefed Trump on the intelligence assessment in March 2019, the AP added.Trump said on Sunday he was not told of the allegations because the information was not "credible". The White House has claimed there was no consensus among intelligence agencies. The administration is yet to address whether Trump received a written report or if he read it.At Monday's White House briefing, the press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, was asked if the information was contained in the president's daily brief, a summary of high-level information and analysis on national security issues. She replied, carefully: "He was not personally briefed on the matter" and repeated on Tuesday that Trump "was never briefed".White House officials briefed Democrats only after sharing information with Republicans on Monday. After Tuesday's meeting, Adam Schiff, chairman of the House intelligence committee, told reporters: "As we look at these allegations, number one the president of the United States should not be inviting Russia into the G7 or G8. We should be considering what sanctions are appropriate to further deter Russia's malign activities."Schiff, who prosecuted the impeachment case against Trump over a quid pro quo with Ukraine, added: "There may be a reluctance to brief the president on things he doesn't want to hear and that may be more true with respect to Putin and Putin's Russia than with respect to any other subject matter. Many of us do not understand his affinity for that autocratic ruler who means our nation ill."Schiff called on Trump to consider imposing new economic sanctions on Russia, as did former national security adviser, John Bolton, who has published a damning book on the president, which suggests Trump is not fit for office.Ruben Gallego, a member of the armed services committee, told MSNBC: "It is clear that this president has warped the information stream. Because of his love of Putin and Russia, it has made it more difficult, in my opinion, for briefers and people that inform the president of what is happening to keep him up to date on Russian activity, and that has caused a lot of problems."Hillary Clinton tweeted of Trump: "Either he knew and chose to do nothing, or he didn't know because he couldn't be bothered to do his job."The New York Times further reported on Tuesday that US intelligence picked up transfers of large sums from Russian military intelligence to Taliban-linked bank accounts.Trump's handling of diplomatic relations took another hit on Monday when Carl Bernstein, the veteran journalist who reported on the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon, published a report online for CNN."In hundreds of highly classified phone calls with foreign heads of state," Bernstein wrote, citing as sources unnamed White House and intelligence officials, Trump "was so consistently unprepared for discussion of serious issues, so often outplayed in his conversations with powerful leaders like Russian president Vladimir Putin and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and so abusive to leaders of America's principal allies, that the calls helped convince some senior US officials … that the president himself posed a danger to the national security of the United States". |
Pompeo asks UN to extend an international arms embargo on Iran Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:57 PM PDT Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appealed to the UN Security Council Tuesday to extend an expiring arms embargo on Iran, arguing "the world's most heinous terrorist regime" is a threat to international peace and security and "must be held accountable." The international embargo is set to expire in October as part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action [JCPOA] signed by Iran, the EU, Germany and the permanent members of the Security Council, including the U.S. The U.S. withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018. |

You Might Have Forgot: One Year Ago Today, Donald Trump 'Visited' North Korea Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:41 PM PDT Unfortunately, Trump's diplomatic foray with Pyongyang hasn't moved an inch over the last 12 months. Beyond the occasional letter in the mail, Trump and Kim's attempt to rekindle diplomacy on June 30, 2019 has disintegrated like an old piece of fruit wasting away on the vine—a product of two parties, the United States and North Korea, uninterested in doing anything other than lecturing about one another's bad behavior and incapable of contemplating any diplomatic roadmap that doesn't lead to total capitulation. |

Father of Slain Marine Finds Heartbreak Anew in Possible Russian Bounty Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:02 PM PDT WASHINGTON -- Erik Hendriks has largely avoided news reports since his son, Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks, was killed by a car bomb in Afghanistan in April 2019.But the news that several U.S. officials believe that a Russian military intelligence unit paid bounties to Taliban-linked militants to kill U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan has been impossible to ignore, especially as he has learned that the attack in which his son and two other Marines died may have been related to that effort."If it does come out as true, obviously the heartache would be terrible," Hendriks said.He is not a political person, Hendriks insists. While he does not usually vote, he described himself as a supporter of President Donald Trump."I am a Republican and I am a Trump supporter," he said. "But there would be no way he didn't know about it if Russians were paying off these cowards like mafia payoff hit men. I would expect the government to have 1,000% support behind these warriors."Despite the heartbreak of losing a son in combat, Hendriks said he never had doubts about the mission in Afghanistan."I agreed with Mattis on this," he said, referring to Jim Mattis, the retired Marine general who served as Trump's first defense secretary and repeatedly defended the United States' role in Afghanistan."Thank God these warriors were there," Hendriks said. "I really do believe if they were not there, the enemy would be here. I know my son supported it."In a telephone interview from his home in Glen Cove, New York, Hendriks said that "you would think they would have had the best intelligence and the best backing over there. If I find out this information was given to this administration or a previous administration, because let's face it, who knows how long this could have gone on, the little faith I have in government would go down the drain."Felicia Arculeo, Robert Hendriks' mother, and Erik Hendriks' ex-wife, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Erik Hendriks described her as currently "living a nightmare." She told CNBC Monday "that the parties who are responsible should be held accountable, if that's even possible."Lawmakers from both parties in the House and Senate have called for Congress to be briefed on the charges. On Monday, the White House brought in eight House Republicans to be briefed, while some Democrats were scheduled to go to the White House Tuesday morning.Robert Hendriks was 25 when he and two other Marines, Staff Sgt. Christopher K.A. Slutman, 43, a New York City firefighter, and Sgt. Benjamin S. Hines, 31, of York, Pennsylvania, were killed when their armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb near Bagram Air Base, about 20 miles north of Kabul.Hendriks had signed with the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines, a reserve infantry battalion based in Garden City, New York, right after high school. It was his first deployment to Afghanistan, where he was serving with his brother, Joseph, who escorted his body back to the United States.During his 2016 campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to end the foreign entanglements that had engulfed previous administrations over the course of two decades.Indeed, his criticism of the war in Iraq during the campaign and his desire to greatly reduce the United States' role abroad attracted many veterans to his campaign. He has moved to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan. While still popular with veterans and members of the military, he has lost some support in recent months over his use of active-duty troops on American streets against largely peaceful protesters around the nation.VoteVets, a liberal group, has teamed with Concerned Veterans for America, a conservative group aligned with Trump on many policy issues, to oppose overseas interventions and lobby members on Capitol Hill against "forever war."The accusations against Russia and questions around what Trump knew about them drew immediate fury from some groups that represent military families. The Secure Families Initiative, which advocates on behalf of military families on foreign policy matters, said in a statement: "These revelations should appall anyone. But as military families, we are particularly panicked and grief-stricken. Those are our loved ones living with a target on their back. Outrage does not even begin to cover it."This week, VoteVets created a video for social media targeting Trump on the Russia issue, which was watched more than 3 million times on Twitter. The revelations of intelligence pointing toward a Russian bounty program have added to the disappointment and frustration of some veterans."This is pretty outrageous, quite frankly," said Kyle W. Bibby, who was a Marine infantry officer in Helmand, Afghanistan, in 2010 and 2011, and retired last year as a captain. "This consistent theme of the Trump administration of overlooking things Russia has done has become ridiculous."Bibby said that during his time in Afghanistan, Marines were often told that other countries -- notably Iran -- were backing what he called "malign" activities by insurgents against U.S. troops."The general rule of thumb is when something like this takes place, you call it out for the obvious reason that continuing this hurts people who are serving there," he said. "At this point, we know that's a basic expectation of a commander in chief. Donald Trump is not meeting that."But for Erik Hendriks, a retired New York City Police detective, the issue is not a political debate, but a deep emotional scar, something that he said only others who have lost a family member to war can comprehend."I can talk to one thousand people a day and they have no idea what it is like to lay down at night and to lose a son like they do," he said.Hendriks notes that he has no proof of what Trump knew. "Because who knows the truth anymore?" he said. This article originally appeared in The New York Times.(C) 2020 The New York Times Company |
Trump's two Russias confound coherent US policy Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:01 PM PDT When it comes to Russia, the Trump administration just can't seem to make up its mind. For the past three years, the administration has careered between President Donald Trump's attempts to curry favor and friendship with Vladimir Putin and longstanding deep-seated concerns about Putin's intentions. As Trump has repeatedly and openly cozied up to Putin, his administration has imposed harsh and meaningful sanctions and penalties on Russia. |
Iran sentences opposition journalist to death for sparking protests Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:47 PM PDT Iran sentenced a journalist to death for his work that inspired nationwide economic protests in 2017. According to Iranian officials, Ruhollah Zam fanned unrest and undermined the country's theocratic rulers by publicizing protest times and publishing embarrassing information about the country's leaders on AmadNews, his website, and the messaging app Telegram. Zam, who had been in exile in Paris after fleeing after being accused of working with foreign intelligence services, returned to Iran under unknown circumstances and was arrested in October 2019. |

The 51-year-old cosmonaut, who came aboard the ISS in April, cast his ballot as part of a week-long vote to approve constitutional reforms that could extend President Vladimir Putin's rule, Roscosmos said. "Anatoly Ivanishin has become the first man to have voted online from orbit," the Russian space agency said in a statement. |
Pompeo faces opposition in UN push on Iran arms embargo Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:33 AM PDT US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday urged the UN Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Iran, warning that the Middle East's stability was at risk, but he faced wide skepticism over US threats to trigger sanctions. The United States is warning it could employ a disputed legal move to restore wide UN sanctions on Iran if the Security Council does not prolong a ban on conventional arms sales that expires in October. |

With about 40,000 new cases being reported a day, Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said he "would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around." "I am very concerned," he told a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee. |

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:52 AM PDT David Frost has "no proven expertise in national security", Theresa May has said in a blistering attack on Number 10's Whitehall shake-up. The former Prime Minister made her most adversarial appearance in the Commons since she became a backbencher, criticising the government's decision to remove its most senior civil servant. Mr Frost, currently the UK's chief Brexit negotiator, will replace Sir Mark Sedwill as National Security Adviser - the first political appointee to the role since its creation in 2010. Speaking in the Commons, Mrs May, who appointed Sir Mark to the role, described the "expert independent advice" she received from national security advisers in the nine years she spent on the national security council, first as Home Secretary then as Prime Minister. She said "On Saturday [Michael Gove] said: 'We must be able to promote those with proven expertise.' "Why then is the new national security adviser a political appointee with no proven expertise in national security?" Mrs May's attack on the government will be seen as a personal defence of one of her closest allies while she was in government. Sir Mark, a former ambassador to Afghanistan, was appointed Political Director to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2010, while William Hague was Foreign Secretary. In 2013 he was appointed Permanent Secretary to the Home Office, while Mrs May was Home Secretary. As Prime Minister she made Sir Mark National Security Advisor in 2017, before giving him the additional role of Cabinet Secretary a year later. |

After embassy move, U.S. to sell envoy's house near Tel Aviv Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:36 AM PDT The U.S. State Department has put the ambassador to Israel's official residence outside Tel Aviv up for sale, in a decision aimed at cementing the American embassy's controversial move to Jerusalem. The beachfront mansion in the affluent Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya is going on the market because most of Ambassador David Friedman's day-to-day activities are based at the embassy in Jerusalem, the State Department said. |
Biden: Trump has failed at home on virus, abroad with Putin Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:31 AM PDT Joe Biden took aggressive aim Tuesday at President Donald Trump's fitness for the Oval Office, suggesting he has abdicated his duty to protect U.S. troops facing Russian threats abroad and American citizens facing a pandemic and economic calamity at home. Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, told reporters Trump has "a lot to answer for" concerning news reports that he was advised as early as March 2019 of intelligence that suggested Russia was offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans. The one-two punch reflects the core of Biden's candidacy, which he built on the argument that Trump is morally and temperamentally unfit to lead the nation. |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:27 AM PDT Following a White House briefing Tuesday morning regarding reports that Russia offered bounties to the Taliban to kill U.S. military personnel, House Democrats renewed their call for an all-Member briefing from the intelligence community – "so we'd have direct evidence and discussion from intelligence community into how credible they assess the information." House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called the intelligence a "red flag" and said the American people must understand whether the United States' relationship with Russia is "compromised by the relationship between the president and Mr. Putin." "It either was not waved, or the president ignored the wave," Hoyer, D-Md., said. |
With a pen stroke, Mississippi drops Confederate-themed flag Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:22 AM PDT With a stroke of the governor's pen, Mississippi is retiring the last state flag in the U.S. with the Confederate battle emblem — a symbol that's widely condemned as racist. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves signed the historic bill Tuesday at the Governor's Mansion, immediately removing official status for the 126-year-old banner that has been a source of division for generations. "This is not a political moment to me but a solemn occasion to lead our Mississippi family to come together, to be reconciled and to move on," Reeves said on live TV just before the signing. |
City of London must face Brexit hit, Barnier tells finance chiefs Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:22 AM PDT British trade negotiators will fail in their efforts to insulate the City of London from the worst consequences of Brexit, Michel Barnier warned a meeting of finance chiefs on Tuesday. The EU's chief negotiator said that British demands in the ongoing trade talks in Brussels were unacceptable and that UK plans to ditch EU financial regulation risked another crisis that could hurt the bloc. UK proposals would make it easy to continue to run EU businesses from London after the end of the transition period on December 31, he said, and prevent the EU from freezing UK financial services out of the Single Market at short notice. "I will be blunt. Its proposals are unacceptable," he said as negotiations continued in the Belgian capital, "The UK is trying to keep as many Single Market benefits as it can." London remains Europe's pre-eminent financial hub but that status is coveted by Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, which hope to profit from Brexit. "[The UK] would like to make it easy to continue to run EU businesses from London, with minimal operations and staff on the continent," Mr Barnier, said. "It wants to ban residence requirements for senior managers and boards of directors, to ensure that all essential functions remain in London," he added. "We are asking for arrangements just like those the EU agreed with Japan," a UK spokesman said, "Japan is not in the single market." UK financial services lose their EU "passport" to the Single Market at the end of the year. Brussels insists that future access will be based on "equivalence", a system of regulatory approval that can be withdrawn by the European Commission unilaterally and at as little as 30 days notice in some cases. British negotiators have called for a joint committee on equivalence decisions, which Mr Barnier said was attempting to turn unilateral decisions into co-managed ones. "These are autonomous, unilateral tools. And, as such, they are not part of our current negotiations," Mr Barnier said. Last year, the commission froze Swiss stock exchanges out of the Single Market in a bid to force Bern back to the negotiating table over a new treaty governing their relationship. London and Bern said on Tuesday they would begin negotiating a bilateral financial services agreement. Mr Barnier was internal market commissioner during the financial crisis and was responsible for much of the post-crisis regulation that was introduced by Brussels after 2008. Mr Barnier told the Eurofi think tank that the UK planned to ditch EU financial services regulations after Brexit. "Let us have no illusions: The UK will progressively start diverging from the EU framework. This is even one of the main purposes of Brexit," he said. He said, "The size of the UK financial market and the very close links between the EU and UK financial systems mean we need to be extra careful. We need to capture all potential risks: for financial stability, market integrity, investor and consumer protection, and the level playing field." EU and UK negotiators will continue discussion until the end of the week before another round of talks is held in London next week. In London, it emerged that UK companies exporting into the EU will have to wait for permission from tax authorities before moving their goods. Lorries will only be able to move loads into the EU if they have a valid reference from the so-called Goods Vehicle Movement Service, a new and untested IT platform, under plans being drawn up by the government. "British exporters will be the biggest losers from this," said Naomi Smith, chief executive officer of Best for Britain, a pro-EU campaigning group. "Additional bureaucracy threatens to clog up our trade arteries." |
Lebanon judge who banned interviews of US envoy resigns Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:20 AM PDT The Lebanese judge who issued a ruling banning foreign and local media from interviewing the U.S. ambassador in Beirut resigned Tuesday, according to state media. Judge Mohammad Mazeh was referred to questioning by the Judicial Inspection Board for the ban, which caused an uproar in Lebanon. Mazeh issued the ban Saturday, a day after Ambassador Dorothoy Shea told Saudi-owned TV station Al-Hadath that Washington has "great concerns" over the role Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has in the embattled Lebanese government. |
Beijing tightens screws on Hong Kong as contentious new law goes into effect on handover anniversary Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:20 AM PDT China's Xinhua News Agency later reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the presidential order for the law to be promulgated into Hong Kong's Basic Law, the city's mini-constitution. It is largely believed that the law targeting the protest movement in Hong Kong will become effective overnight in the territory before the Chinese five star flag is raised on the morning of July 1. |

Lebanese media banned from talking to U.S. ambassador after Hezbollah criticism Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:09 AM PDT The U.S. ambassador to Lebanon has vowed she won't be silenced despite a court order banning media outlets from talking to her — a ruling that was slammed by some within the Lebanese government — after she criticized the country's most powerful party amid an escalating financial crisis. A judge passed an order to stop media outlets from speaking to Dorothy Shea or reporting her comments for a year or face a $200,000 fine and a broadcasting ban if adopted by the country's Information Ministry, after she publicly criticized Hezbollah, the Iran-backed political party and militant group that controls the country's government. Saturday's ruling by Judge Mohammed Mazeh, who is based in the southern Hezbollah stronghold of Tyre, came after Shea accused Hezbollah of destabilizing an economic recovery in Lebanon and siphoning billions of dollars from the government. |
Pompeo to UN: Ending Iran embargo would risk Mideast stability Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:02 AM PDT US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday urged the UN Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Iran, warning that its expiration would risk the stability of the oil-rich region. "Iran will hold a sword of Damocles over the economic stability of the Middle East, endangering nations like Russia and China that rely on stable energy prices," Pompeo told the virtual session, referencing two opponents of prolonging the embargo. |
'Pooled testing' for COVID-19 holds promise, pitfalls Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:51 AM PDT The nation's top health officials are banking on a new approach to dramatically boost U.S. screening for the coronavirus: combining test samples in batches instead of running them one by one. The potential benefits include stretching laboratory supplies, reducing costs and expanding testing to millions more Americans who may unknowingly be spreading the virus. Health officials think infected people who aren't showing symptoms are largely responsible for the rising number of cases across more than half of states. |

Netanyahu signals delay in West Bank annexation plan Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:13 AM PDT Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that discussions with the U.S. on his plan to annex occupied West Bank territory would continue "in the coming days," indicating he would miss a July 1 target date for beginning the controversial process. Netanyahu made the comments shortly after wrapping up talks with White House envoy Avi Berkowitz and the U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman. The sides have been holding talks for several months on finalizing a map spelling out which areas of the West Bank will be annexed by Israel. |

Intel Proves ‘Russian Bounties’ Were No Hoax, House Dems Say Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:37 AM PDT A group of House Democrats left a classified briefing at the White House Tuesday morning, on reports that Russia paid Taliban fighters bounties on U.S. soldiers, with complaints that Trump administration officials were not more forthcoming about the intelligence. And they also left with lots of questions about why the president—who has dismissed the story as another "Russia hoax"—is not being more forthcoming with criticism for Russian president Vladimir Putin."The president called this a hoax, publicly," said Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the number two House Democrat, at a Capitol Hill press conference after returning from the White House. "Nothing in the briefing we just received led me to believe it's a hoax. There may be different judgments as to the level of credibility… there was no assertion that the information we had was a hoax.""We did not," said Hoyer, "receive any new, substantive information."And Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said that the "right people to give the briefing were not in the room," noting the absence of intelligence agency leaders. Schiff also addressed the question of whether or not Trump himself was briefed on the intelligence, as the initial report in The New York Times alleged and Trump denies. "There may be a reluctance to brief the president on things he doesn't want to hear," he said. The Daily Beast reported on Tuesday that top White House officials did not want to brief Trump on the Russia bounty intelligence for fear he'd resist or ignore the information. Schiff also questioned why the Trump administration has not addressed how it will respond to Russia. "I find it inexplicable in light of these public allegations that the president hasn't come before the country and assured people that he'll get to the bottom of whether Russians are putting bounties on the heads of troops," said Schiff, who said that U.S. officials should be considering sanctions on Russia, not inviting them to multilateral talks like those in the G7.The Democratic lawmakers said they were unable to elaborate on why the intelligence was not, as Trump claimed, a "hoax." They are requesting an all-member briefing from intelligence officials soon. But a key focus going forward, said Hoyer, is learning more about what Trump knew about the matter, and when. If Harry Truman said the "buck stops with me," quipped Hoyer, "Trump says, I didn't see the buck."Trump Officials Didn't Want to Tell Him About the 'Russian Bounties'The lawmakers' tone was a stark departure from what House Republicans had to say when they left a briefing on the matter at the White House yesterday. A GOP attendee, Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), tweeted that White House officials had debunked what he called The New York Times' "hit piece," and blamed the paper for reporting details about the alleged bounty system. "Now it's impossible to finish the investigation," said Banks. "Many in the media & Congress rushed to judgment before learning the whole story."Democrats were not present at that meeting, which Banks said featured Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and "top intelligence officials." Spokespeople for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Armed Services Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) all told The Daily Beast on Monday they had not been invited. On Tuesday, Hoyer said that Meadows called him on Sunday night about setting up a briefing for a small group of Democratic lawmakers. The Democrats' calls for additional briefings are likely to set up a showdown with the White House, which the lawmakers say has not taken the Russia intelligence seriously enough to warrant the all-member briefing they believe is necessary. Schiff said his committee has also requested additional documents to review as it investigates the matter.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Supreme Court lifts ban on state aid to religious schooling Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:35 AM PDT States can't cut religious schools out of programs that send public money to private education, a divided Supreme Court ruled Tuesday. The Montana Supreme Court had struck down the K-12 private education scholarship program that was created by the Legislature in 2015 to make donors eligible for up to $150 in state tax credits. The state court had ruled that the tax credit violated the Montana constitution's ban on state aid to religious schools. |

Ex-Atlanta officer who killed Rayshard Brooks granted bond Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:07 AM PDT The former Atlanta police officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks can be free on bond while his case is pending, a judge ruled Tuesday. Putin unveils monument to fallen Red Army WWII soldiers Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:51 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin and his counterpart from Belarus on Tuesday unveiled a monument honoring the fallen Red Army soldiers who fought in one of the most bloody battles of World War II. Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko traveled to the village of Khoroshevo, just outside Rzhev, about 200 kilometers (about 125 miles) northwest of Moscow for a somber ceremony that involved goose-stepping troops laying wreaths to the towering figure of a soldier. The battle of Rzhev, in which the Red Army launched a series of offensives in 1942-1943 to dislodge the Wermacht from its positions close to Moscow, involved enormous Soviet losses from persistent, poorly prepared attacks against well-fortified Nazi positions. |
Israeli AG rejects Netanyahu request for financial legal aid Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:08 AM PDT Israel's attorney general said Tuesday he opposed a request from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to have a wealthy American supporter finance his legal defense against corruption charges. Netanyahu had asked an Israeli oversight committee to allow a 10 million shekel ($2.9 million) donation from Spencer Partrich, a Michigan-based real estate magnate, to fund his legal team. Because Partrich also happens to be a witness in one of the cases, the committee had asked the country's attorney general for his opinion on the matter. |
Las Vegas Casino Workers Sue Resort Owners Alleging Inadequate COVID-19 Safety Measures Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:57 AM PDT Casino workers are suing MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ: CZR), alleging failure to protect employees from the new coronavirus. What Happened On Monday, the workers filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Las Vegas claiming that Caesars Entertainment owned Harrah's and MGM-owned Bellagio and MGM Grand did not end food and beverage operations at once after learning of COVID-19 positive cases, reported the Wall Street Journal. An MGM spokesperson told the Journal that the resort operator had offered free testing to employees before they returned to work. The spokesperson also claimed that managers are trained in response protocols and worked with public-health officials on contact tracing.Caesars Entertainment revealed that a restaurant employee had tested positive, and an investigation had been conducted which identified co-workers that came in contact with the affected employee. Why It Matters The unions involved in the lawsuit represent 60,000 hospitality workers, according to the WSJ.Nineteen union workers or their dependants have died due to COVID-19, while three valets and bellmen have tested positive at the Signature at MGM Grand.
