Iraqi troops push to retake Tikrit from rebels, parties pursue talks Posted: 28 Jun 2014 09:49 AM PDT By Raheem Salman and Ned Parker BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi government forces backed by helicopter gunships began an offensive on Saturday to retake the northern city of Tikrit from Sunni Islamist militants while party leaders pursued talks that could end Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's divisive rule. Politicians in Baghdad and world powers warn that unless security forces recover cities lost to the jihadi insurgents in tandem with a rapid formation of a government that can bring Iraq's estranged communities together, the country could rip apart along sectarian lines and menace the wider Middle East. On the battlefield, Iraqi troops were trying to advance on Tikrit from the direction of Samarra to the south that has become the military's line in the sand against a militant advance southwards towards Baghdad. Iraqi special forces already have snipers inside Tikrit University who were dropped by air there in a bold operation on Thursday. |
Libyan suspect pleads not guilty in Benghazi attack Posted: 28 Jun 2014 03:10 PM PDT By Patricia, Zengerle, and, Doina and Chiacu WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Libyan militia leader pleaded not guilty in a U.S. federal court on Saturday to a terrorism charge in the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi that killed four Americans. Ahmed Abu Khatallah was transferred to the U.S. District Court in Washington on Saturday morning from a Navy warship where he had been held since his June 15 capture by U.S. special operations forces in Libya. He was charged at an afternoon hearing with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists resulting in death in the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi. The Sept. 11, 2012, attack triggered a political firestorm for President Barack Obama, with Republicans accusing his administration of misrepresenting the circumstances and of lax protection for diplomats. |
Saudi king, in Ramadan message, vows to crush terrorists Posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:19 PM PDT Saudi King Abdullah, in a Ramadan message on Saturday, vowed to crush Islamist militants threatening the kingdom, the state news agency reported, saying the world's top oil exporter would not tolerate "a band of terrorists". The remarks came two days after the monarch ordered all necessary measures to protect the country against potential "terrorist threats" resulting from turmoil in neighboring Iraq, where Sunni Islamist militants have captured some cities from the government of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Saudi Arabia crushed al Qaeda after the Islamist militant group began a campaign of bombings and attacks on vital installations and expatriate compounds in the kingdom. The U.S.-allied kingdom has been rattled by a lightning advance through Iraq by Sunni militants spearheaded by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - aided by other Sunni Muslim militants, tribal leaders and remnants of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party - which seized swathes of the country this month. |
Libya needs two weeks to publish elections results Posted: 28 Jun 2014 02:50 PM PDT Libya will need around two weeks to count the votes of last week's parliamentary election and publish final results, the elections commission said on Saturday. On Wednesday, the North African state elected a new assembly in a vote marred by a low turnout and violence, opening a new chapter in Libya's bumpy transition toward democracy since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gaddafi to an armed uprising. "We are expecting to announce the final results in mid-Ramadan," said Emad Sayeh, head of the High National Election Commission. |
China drives home message that golf courses are not the fairway to heaven Posted: 28 Jun 2014 04:12 PM PDT By Clare Jim and Xiaoyi Shao HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) - All that remains of the long fairways and manicured greens at the 18-hole golf course on the outskirts of Beijing are bits of rubble and mounds of mud. In March, Chinese authorities sent in workers to dig up the course and tear down the clubhouse. Two others across China were also demolished while another was turned into an eco-friendly park and a fifth converted into a tea plantation, suggesting the government could finally be cracking down on developers who have long ignored a 2004 ban on building new golf courses. A few weeks later, the national auditor joined in, publicly shaming two big state-run enterprises for building golf courses. |
Ukraine rebels free OSCE monitors, three Ukrainians killed in attack Posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:35 PM PDT By Aleksandar Vasovic DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine on Saturday released a second group of four monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) who had been seized on May 29, a Reuters witness said. Their release, which followed the freeing of another group of OSCE monitors early on Friday, came after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced a 72-hour extension to a ceasefire until Monday night. They stepped out, shook hands with other waiting OSCE representatives and then went into the hotel. A first group of OSCE monitors, seized days earlier by pro-Russian separatists, were released in the early hours of Friday. |

About 350 anti-World Cup protesters marched toward the Maracana closely guarded by about 250 police, who fired tear gas to disperse them just as they came within sight of the stadium. An AFP correspondent saw police detain at least three demonstrators and frog march them away from the crowd. Mass protests erupted just over a year ago in Brazil, at first drawing hundreds of thousands of people into the streets to condemn the record $11 billion spent on the World Cup and shoddy schools, hospitals and public transport. |
