Wu and Ben Blanchard TAIPEI/BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold talks with his Taiwanese counterpart Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore on Saturday in the first such meeting of leaders from the two rivals since the Chinese civil war ended in 1949. The historic meeting comes at a sensitive time in Taiwan, with elections for a new president and legislature being held on Jan. 16 amid rising anti-China sentiment, particularly among younger Taiwanese who don't believe Taiwan benefits from closer economic ties with its giant neighbor. Ma would not sign any agreements, nor issue any joint statements with China during the trip, it added. |

Pope still faces stiff resistance to reform Vatican, new books say Posted: 03 Nov 2015 02:37 PM PST By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Two new books by Italian journalists depict a Vatican plagued by mismanagement, greed, cronyism and corruption and where Pope Francis still faces stiff resistance from the old guard to his reform agenda. The books, "Merchants in the Temple," by Gianluigi Nuzzi and "Avarice," by Emiliano Fittipaldi, which are being released in Italy on Wednesday, have already been condemned by the Vatican. On Monday, the Vatican said the books "generate confusing, partial, and tendentious interpretations" in a statement that announced the arrest of two members of a commission the pope had set up to study financial reforms. |

Spurred by Myanmar radicals, Thai Buddhists push for state religion status Posted: 03 Nov 2015 03:57 PM PST By Andrew R.C. Marshall and Pairat Temphairojana BANGKOK (Reuters) - A campaign to enshrine Buddhism as Thailand's state religion has been galvanized by a radical Buddhist movement in neighboring Myanmar that is accused of stoking religious tension, the leader of the Thai bid said. Experts say the campaign could appeal to Thailand's military junta, which is struggling for popularity 18 months after staging a coup, and tap into growing anti-Muslim sentiment in a country that prides itself on religious tolerance. While Buddhists form an overwhelming majority in both countries, Thailand has avoided the nationwide religious violence that has killed hundreds of people in Myanmar, most of them Muslims. |
Argentina's opposition camp fights fear-mongering with humor Posted: 03 Nov 2015 02:10 PM PST By Sarah Marsh BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - If Argentina's opposition hopeful Mauricio Macri wins the presidency in the Nov. 22 run-off, he will make minced meat out of Bambi and the ozone layer will disappear, according to a new campaign poking fun at the ruling party's fear-mongering. Since the center-right challenger scored a surprisingly strong result in the first round, the camp of the leftist ruling party's candidate Daniel Scioli has sought to fan worries Macri would cut welfare benefits and let free markets wreak havoc. Online adverts appeared last weekend warning that voters will end up hungry and homeless with Macri as president, while the catchphrase "Fatherland or Macri" is being graffitied on walls around Buenos Aires. |
