Nearly 120 killed in overnight Baghdad bombings claimed by Islamic State Posted: 03 Jul 2016 10:53 AM PDT By Ahmed Rasheed and Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nearly 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in two bombings overnight in Baghdad, most of them in a busy shopping area as residents celebrated Ramadan, police and medical sources said on Sunday. The attack on the shopping area of Karrada is the deadliest since U.S.-backed Iraqi forces last month scored a major victory when it dislodged Islamic State from their stronghold of Falluja, an hour's drive west of the capital. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had ordered the offensive after a series of bombings in Baghdad, saying Falluja served as a launchpad for such attacks on the capital. |
Ahead of key court ruling, Beijing in propaganda overdrive Posted: 03 Jul 2016 04:38 PM PDT By Greg Torode and Mike Collett-White HONG KONG/LONDON (Reuters) - As an international tribunal prepares to rule on Beijing's territorial claims in the South China Sea, officials in Washington, Tokyo and Southeast Asia are on tenterhooks. On July 12, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague will rule on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its territorial claims and actions across the disputed waters and vital global trade route. Beijing claims some 90 percent of the South China Sea, and the Philippines is challenging it under a United Nations maritime convention. |
Bangladesh gunmen made no demands, Islamic State not involved: minister Posted: 03 Jul 2016 12:18 PM PDT By Aditya Kalra, Serajul Quadir and Ruma Paul DHAKA (Reuters) - Seven militants who killed 20 people at a Dhaka restaurant made no demands and a person taken alive by police was only a suspect admitted in hospital, Bangladesh's home minister said on Sunday, rejecting Islamic State's claims of responsibility. Three of the six gunmen killed were under 22 years of age and had been missing for six months, Asaduzzaman Khan told Reuters in an interview at his Dhaka home. Police and government officials have said the attackers were from well-off Bangladeshi families, a rarity and an indication that religious radicalization was widening its scope. |
Australia in limbo as vote counting in tight election to take days Posted: 03 Jul 2016 04:32 PM PDT By Jane Wardell and Wayne Cole SYDNEY (Reuters) - Vote counting resumed on Monday in a dramatic Australian federal election but a winner is not expected to be announced for several days, raising the prospect of prolonged political and economic instability. The exceptionally close vote leaves Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull chasing support from key independent and minor parties - the very groups he called a risky double dissolution election to circumvent - to retain power. The opposition Labor Party is also schmoozing with a quartet of new power brokers who are yet to declare support for either side, as rumbling grows about Turnbull's future as leader of the centre-right Liberal Party-led coalition. |

It will return to the crash site to make further checks for any possible remains there, the statement said. |

Three militants opened fire outside Ataturk airport's international arrivals terminal on Tuesday night before two of them entered the building and blew themselves up. "The terrorist organization called Daesh, which burnt our hearts in this holy month, is the biggest form of evil that targets our religion," President Tayyip Erdogan told a ramadan dinner in Istanbul on Sunday. |

British PM frontrunner vows to limit immigration Posted: 03 Jul 2016 04:46 PM PDT The favourite to become Britain's next prime minister on Sunday vowed to push for an EU trade deal that limits immigration, as a law firm warned Brexit needed parliament's backing to begin. The shock June 23 vote caused upheaval in British politics and financial markets, leaving lawmakers at odds over what negotiating position to take and when to begin the official exit procedure from the European Union. "The Brexit vote gave us a very clear message that we couldn't allow free movement (of people) to continue as it had," May told ITV, adding that she would seek a guarantee for the status of EU nationals already in Britain. |

Kuwait foils three Islamic State attacks: state media Posted: 03 Jul 2016 04:34 PM PDT Kuwait foiled three planned Islamic State attacks on the country, including a plot to blow up a Shi'ite mosque, after launching raids that resulted in the arrest of militants, state news agency KUNA said on Monday. "Kuwait security agencies have carried out three pre-emptive operations in Kuwait and abroad that led to derailing a number of Islamic State (IS) plots targeting Kuwait and arresting several IS members," said an interior ministry statement on KUNA. The statement included pictures of a veiled, middle-aged woman and five young men, one of whom it said was a Kuwaiti national who had joined Islamic State and planned to bomb a mosque and an interior ministry building during Eid holidays. |

According to the reports, 560 homes will be built in Maale Adumim, a large settlement in the occupied West Bank near Jerusalem. |

The suspects, who are in police custody, were charged with belonging to a terror group, homicide and endangering the unity of the state, Dogan reported, without providing the foreigners' nationalities. |

Lawyers at Mishcon de Reya argue that the British government cannot trigger Article 50, the legal process for leaving the EU, without a parliamentary debate and vote authorising it to do so. "The result of the referendum is not in doubt, but we need a process that follows UK law to enact it," said Kasra Nouroozi, a partner at Mishcon de Reya in a statement. |

It came a week after Iraqi security forces recaptured Fallujah from IS, leaving Mosul as the only Iraqi city under the jihadist group's control. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered changes to Baghdad security measures in response to the bombing, which security officials said also wounded more than 180 people. |
Belgium slow to share info on Paris attacker: lawmaker Posted: 03 Jul 2016 01:38 PM PDT Belgian authorities were slow to pass on key information about the only surviving suspect in last year's Paris attacks, French lawmakers said Sunday, raising the possibility that he could have been arrested within hours of the bloody gun and suicide bomb raids. French police checked Salah Abdeslam's papers at a checkpoint near the Belgian border the morning after the November 13 attacks that killed 130 people in the French capital, but let him go 30 minutes later because he was not on their list of suspects. More than an hour after that the Belgian authorities informed France that Abdeslam had jihadist links, and the order was given to arrest him. |

Iraq PM orders security changes after blast kills 119 Posted: 03 Jul 2016 01:13 PM PDT Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi Sunday ordered changes to Baghdad security measures, including withdrawing fake bomb detectors from use, after a bombing killed at least 119 people in the city. The suicide car bombing, which was claimed by the Islamic State group, ripped through a busy shopping in the early hours and also wounded more than 180 people, officials said. Abadi's orders highlight one of the longest-running and most grievous flaws in Baghdad security: the continued use of fake bomb detectors at checkpoints years after the man who sold them to Iraq was jailed in Britain for fraud. |
