Fierce cyclone rips into India; 550,000 flee to shelters Posted: 12 Oct 2013 12:59 PM PDT By Sruthi Gottipati and Jatindra Dash ICHAPURAM/BHUBANESWAR, India (Reuters) - A fierce cyclone tore into India's coast, killing at least five people, forcing half a million into shelters and threatening to devastate farmland and fishing hamlets. Cyclone Phailin was expected to remain a "very severe cyclonic storm", packing winds of up to 210 kph (130 mph), into Sunday before steadily weakening as it moves inland in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The storm snapped trees and electricity poles and smashed windows in Brahmapur, a town in the area where it hit land on Saturday evening. ... |
Car bomb explodes in Iraqi city of Samarra, killing 14 Posted: 12 Oct 2013 10:13 AM PDT SAMARRA, Iraq (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded in a street lined with shops in the Iraqi city of Samarra on Saturday, killing at least 14 people, police and medics said. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack, but Sunni Islamist and other insurgents, including al Qaeda have been regaining ground this year, reversing a decline in sectarian bloodshed that reached a peak in 2006-7. More than 6,000 people have been killed in acts of violence across the country so far this year, as Iraq's sectarian balance comes under acute strain from the civil war in neighboring Syria. ... |

Dispute on immunity for U.S. troops blocks Afghan-U.S. security pact Posted: 12 Oct 2013 02:01 PM PDT By Lesley Wroughton and Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Afghan President Hamid Karzai ended two days of talks on a bilateral security pact on Saturday without a deal because they could not agree on the issue of legal immunity for U.S. troops. The pact would determine, among other things, how many U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan after 2014 when most foreign combat troops are due to exit. U.S. officials had previously said they wanted the pact finalized by the end of October. ... |

Schaeuble sees new German government by mid-November Posted: 12 Oct 2013 02:28 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Talks to form a German government are on track and the new administration should be in place by mid-November, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Saturday.
