China blackmailing dissenters in US to return home – FBI chief

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:30 PM PDT

China blackmailing dissenters in US to return home – FBI chief* Christopher Wray condemns Operation Fox Hunt campaign * 'A sweeping bid to target Chinese nationals Xi sees as threats'Chinese agents have been pursuing hundreds of Chinese nationals living in the US in an effort to force their return, as part of a global campaign against the country's diaspora, known as Operation Fox Hunt, the FBI director has said.In a speech about the security threat posed by China, during which he said Beijing's counterintelligence work was "greatest long-term threat to our nation's information and intellectual property and to our economic vitality", Christopher Wray gave the example of one Fox Hunt target who was given a choice of going back to China or killing themselves.Fox Hunt was launched six years ago by President Xi Jinping, ostensibly to pursue corrupt officials and business executives who had fled abroad. Beijing has celebrated its claimed successes, publicising the return of hundreds of economic fugitives, and issuing wanted lists of those still at large. The Obama administration complained about the activities of undercover agents in 2015.Wray said the operation's principal aim now was to suppress dissent among the diaspora. He told the Hudson Institute in Washington: "China describes Fox Hunt as some kind of international anti-corruption campaign. It is not. Instead, Fox Hunt is a sweeping bid by Xi to target Chinese nationals who he sees as threats and who live outside of China, across the world."We're talking about political rivals, dissidents and critics seeking to expose China's extensive human rights violations."The FBI director said: "Hundreds of these Fox Hunt victims that they target live right here in the United States, and many are American citizens or green card holders. The Chinese government wants to force them to return to China, and China's tactics to accomplish that are shocking."For example, when it couldn't locate one Fox Hunt target, the Chinese government sent an emissary to visit the target's family here in the US. The message they said to pass on: the target had two options, returned to China promptly or commit suicide."Wray said that Fox Hunt operations, directed by China's ministry of public security, were also under way in other countries, and the FBI had been cooperating with its partners to foil Chinese efforts at intimidation. He said Chinese nationals in the US were often coerced by thinly veiled threats against their families back in China.Asked about other coercive tactics used, he replied: "Use your imagination. You're not going to be far off."He appealed to anyone in the US who thought they were a Fox Hunt target to "please reach out to your local FBI field office".Wray portrayed China as an aggressive rival with little or no regard for international or national laws. He said that nearly half the FBI's 5,000 active counter-intelligence cases were China-related.China was using leverage, pressure or persuasion through intermediaries on federal, state and local officials, as well as US corporations and media, to win support for Chinese foreign policy positions. Wray said such efforts had been stepped up during the coronavirus outbreak, aimed at generating praise for Beijing's handling of the pandemic.Although he did not say whether China backed either Donald Trump or his presumptive Democratic rival, Joe Biden, he claimed China was pushing its preferences for the outcome of the 2020 presidential election."China's malign foreign influence campaign targets our policies, our positions, 24/7, 365 days a year," Wray said. "So it's not an election-specific threat; it's really more of an all-year, all-the-time threat. But certainly that has implications for elections and they certainly have preferences that go along with that."The FBI director said that China was also involved in mass hacking, identity theft and intellectual property espionage, and there are 1,000 investigations into "China's actual and attempted theft of technology" in all the bureau's 56 field offices."The people of the United States are the victims of what amounts to Chinese theft on a scale so massive that it represents one of the largest transfers of wealth in human history," Wray said.In an interview on Tuesday, the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said that the US was considering banning the social media platform TikTok and other Chinese-made apps.India banned TikTok and over 50 other Chinese apps last week, in the wake of clashes on the China-India border in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed."We're certainly looking at it," Pompeo told Fox News. "With respect to Chinese apps on people's cellphones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right. I don't want to get out in front of the president, but it's something we're looking at."

UK set to resume Saudi arms sales despite Yemen concernsBritain said on Tuesday it would resume arms sales to Saudi Arabia, halted last year after a UK court ruling over the Gulf kingdom's bombing campaign in neighbouring Yemen. Weapons exports were stopped in June 2019 after the Court of Appeal ordered the government to clarify how it assesses whether their use in Yemen's civil war breaches international humanitarian law (IHL). The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and triggered what the United Nations has described as the world's worst existing humanitarian crisis.

3 things 'ZeroZeroZero' gets right about the cocaine trade

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:57 AM PDT

3 things 'ZeroZeroZero' gets right about the cocaine tradeThe Amazon Prime Video series "ZeroZeroZero" shows U.S. viewers an accurate picture of the modern cocaine trade that's rarely seen on screen. It is loosely based on Italian journalist Roberto Saviano's nonfiction book by the same name.I study cocaine trafficking and U.S. drug policy, and the show reveals three truths that challenge the U.S. government's justification for its war against cocaine trafficking in Central America and Mexico. 1\. Most cocaine isn't destined for US marketsA fundamental government assumption is that any cocaine smuggled north out of South America, where it is produced, is inevitably bound for American streets. That is why the U.S. spends billions of dollars every year attempting to intercept the boats and planes that shuttle cocaine from South America to Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean – an area known to anti-drug forces as the "transit zone." In 2018, for instance, the U.S. military trumpeted its role in drug seizures in the region by claiming that American forces had "helped keep the equivalent of 600 minivans full of cocaine off U.S. streets." By the same logic, the federal government considers anyone caught moving cocaine anywhere in the transit zone to be threatening the U.S.That assumption is behind the March 2020 federal indictment of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro for, among other things, exporting cocaine to Honduras – which prosecutors claimed was "expressly intended to flood the United States with cocaine." And it's behind the recent federal complaint against Honduras' former chief of police, who had allegedly conspired to "transport the drugs westward in Honduras towards the border with Guatemala and eventually the United States."Neither case offers proof that the cocaine involved actually entered U.S. territory. U.S. law requires only that the intent be there, and it is assumed that traffickers must intend for the cocaine to reach the U.S. After all, where else would it go?"ZeroZeroZero" offers the inconvenient answer. Episode 1 takes viewers to northern Mexico as 5.5 tons (5,000 kilograms) of cocaine in sealed pucks are being hidden in the bottom of cans of chilis. Even though the cocaine has made it as far north as Monterrey – less than three hours' drive from Laredo, Texas – viewers learn by Episode 2 that the drugs are not going to the Mexico-U.S. border. Instead, they take a sharp turn southeast and are loaded onto a container ship at the port of Tampico, headed for Italy. This is why the show shines. It depicts a little-known reality: Far more cocaine is transshipped through Central America and Mexico to markets worldwide than finds its way up American nostrils. How do I know? Illicit commodities are notoriously hard to track. But as I explain in a recent article, an obscure U.S. government data set has for years been compiling reliable intelligence on cocaine traffic through the transit zone. When compared alongside analysts' best estimates of cocaine consumption in the U.S., the data tell an intriguing story.Between 2012 and 2016 – years for which there are comparable data – an average of at least 1,400 tons of high-purity cocaine was annually exported north out of South America and into the transit zone. Of that, law enforcement removed about 335 tons yearly, whether in the transit zone, at the border or within the the U.S. In the same period, U.S. cocaine users consumed on average barely 200 tons per year. That means they used less than one-fifth of the available cocaine flow.So where did the majority of the remaining cocaine go – almost 900 tons a year? There are no comparable sources for the amount consumed in transit zone countries or in Canada. There is, however, strong evidence to suggest that hundreds of tons annually are being trafficked through Mexico and Central America and out to Europe, and across the Pacific to Asia and Australia. Traffickers target those overseas markets for good reason: That's where the money is, and they have a cheap way to get cocaine there. 2\. The big money is in growing overseas marketsThe U.S. government's assumption wasn't always wrong. A generation ago, the Western Hemisphere cocaine trade did function like a pipeline that started in South America, wound through Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean, and discharged cocaine almost exclusively into American neighborhoods. In 1990, the U.S. had an estimated 4.3 million cocaine users. Meanwhile, Western Europe's cocaine markets were still in what a United Nations report called "a developmental stage."Now, the picture is dramatically different. U.S. cocaine consumption has been in a prolonged "nosedive," according to a report from the London School of Economics. In 2018, there were fewer than 2.5 million users, with lower rates of adult use than in many European countries. Experts continue to debate why U.S. demand has plummeted. Even the recent and unprecedented surge in cocaine production in Colombia, which has increased purity and dropped prices in the U.S., has only just curtailed that long slide. Meanwhile, cocaine consumption in cities across 20 European countries rose 70% from 2015 to 2019. Demand in Australia is high and growing, as it is in Eastern Europe and Russia. Again, "ZeroZeroZero" gets it right: The series ends with the players negotiating a shipment from Mexico to Russia.Overseas cocaine markets aren't just expanding. They're also potentially far more lucrative than North American ones. In 2017, a kilo of cocaine that sold wholesale for US$28,000 in the U.S. went for twice that in Northern Europe. Traffickers stand to make immense profits if they can move large volumes cheaply over long distances. This is where the containers come in. 3\. Bulk cocaine is exported from Mexico and Central America in shipping containersMexico and Central America boast three of Latin America's five busiest maritime ports. The busiest of all is Colón, the Caribbean terminus of the Panama Canal, which after the canal's recent expansion can handle 4.3 million shipping containers per year. In fact, maritime port facilities across the region have been upgraded in recent years, with new capacities and efficiencies that have lowered costs and enhanced the region's competitiveness as a transoceanic trade hub.Cocaine traffickers are taking full advantage. The port of Colón has become a major hub for Europe-bound cocaine. Similarly, Costa Rica's recently enhanced Limón-Moín port facilities have been a boon for trans-Atlantic cocaine shipping. In February 2020, inspectors there found 5 tons of cocaine in a shipment of ornamental plants destined for the Netherlands. The same month, a container of mashed bananas out of Limón was stopped in Italy with 3.3 tons of cocaine inside. In May 2020, a container full of coffee left Honduras' newly expanded port of Cortés. Upon arrival at Le Havre, France, 1.5 tons of cocaine were found among the coffee beans. These are just some of the cocaine seizures that made headlines in the last several months. At best, 1 in 10 containers circumnavigating the globe is searched by authorities; the rate is even lower for containers holding perishable commodities like plants and fruit. So these seizures, while large, likely represent just a fraction of the cocaine transshipped via container out of Central America and Mexico. As "ZeroZeroZero" shows, cocaine traffickers operating in Mexico and Central America may be working in the United States' proverbial back yard, but their distribution networks reach much more widely than they used to. The U.S. is no longer cocaine's true north. This article is republished from The Conversation, a nonprofit news site dedicated to sharing ideas from academic experts.Read more: * Inside Mexico's war on drugs: Conversations with 'el narco' * The little-understood connection between Islamic terror and drug profitsKendra McSweeney receives funding from the National Science Foundation and has received research support from the Open Society Foundation, the National Geographic Society, the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), the American Association of Geographers, and The Ohio State University.

Breonna Taylor's family argues police had no cause for raidLouisville police called off a warrant search of Breonna Taylor's apartment after a drug suspect was located elsewhere, but then went ahead with the deadly raid to look for other suspects with no connection to Taylor, her family says in a new court filing. Taylor, a emergency medical technician who had settled down for the night at her Louisville apartment, was fatally shot when officers burst into her apartment in the early morning hours of March 13. The shooting set off weeks of protests, policy changes and a call for the officers who shot Taylor to be criminally charged.

Aggressive seaweed smothers one of world's most remote reefs

Aggressive seaweed smothers one of world's most remote reefsResearchers say a recently discovered species of seaweed is killing large patches of coral on once-pristine reefs and is rapidly spreading across one of the most remote and protected ocean environments on earth. A study from the University of Hawaii and others says the seaweed is spreading more rapidly than anything they've seen in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, a nature reserve that stretches more than 1,300 miles north of the main Hawaiian Islands. The algae easily breaks off and rolls across the ocean floor like tumbleweed, scientists say, covering nearby reefs in thick vegetation that out-competes coral for space, sunlight and nutrients.

The global market for Hand Tools & Accessories is forecast to reach US$24.3 billion by 2025

The global market for Hand Tools & Accessories is forecast to reach US$24.3 billion by 2025The global market for Hand Tools & Accessories is forecast to reach US$24.3 billion by 2025, driven by their continued relevance in building, shaping, repairing and maintaining an increasingly mechanical and engineered world. A key newsworthy trend in the market is the growing focus on cutting edge design innovations in tool ergonomics especially against the backdrop of a highly mature and commoditized market boxed in by competition from power tools. Growing incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and focus on worker productivity in light manufacturing that require manual assembly are also driving the emphasis on occupational ergonomics. Mechanics` service tools are witnessing robust demand supported by aging plant infrastructure in most industries and increased load and frequency of maintenance and repair of industrial machinery; strong demand for automotive aftermarket repair and maintenance services; and expanding aircraft fleet and growth in aircraft MRO services; stable construction industry, higher employment rate of construction workers and a parallel increase in demand for masonry and plumbing tools. In the automotive industry which is a major end-use of mechanic hand tools, the growth in aftermarket services is guided by growing global vehicle population (PARC); rising awareness among vehicle owners over the importance of timely maintenance; adoption of remote vehicle diagnostics systems which encourage timeliness of car maintenance and repair; growing base of fleet vehicles which have higher wear and tear associated with higher annual vehicle miles traveled; and increasing sales of used cars in emerging markets. Other major factors influencing growth in the market include growing popularity and value of multitask hand tools for their ability to reduce redundancy associated with standard tool collections; robust demand for manual torque tools in manipulating new generation materials such as ceramics; growing Do-It-Yourself (DIY) home improvement activity in developed countries against the back of rising labor costs and the resulting increase in sales of packaged DIY tools ranging from wrenches, screw driver and hammers. Trump administration to formally withdraw US from WHO as it surpasses 130,000 coronavirus deaths

Trump administration to formally withdraw US from WHO as it surpasses 130,000 coronavirus deathsThe Trump administration has formally notified the United Nations that it will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), breaking ties with the international health body as the US death toll from coronavirus surpassed 130,000. The US notice of withdrawal, effective from July 6 2021, was formally submitted to the United Nations secretary-general, the depository for the WHO, on Monday a senior administration official told The Telegraph. The move was immediately critcised by Democrats with Joe Biden, the party's presumptive presidential nominee, pledging to rejoin the WHO on his "first day" as president if he is elected in November. "Americans are safer when America is engaged in strengthening global health," Mr Biden said, saying he would "restore our leadership on the world stage". Bob Mendez, a Democratic senator for New Jersey, revealed Congress had been notified of the WHO withdrawal on Tuesday as he criticised the move, pointing out that the country was still "in the midst of a pandemic". "To call Trump's response to Covid chaotic & incoherent doesn't do it justice. This won't protect American lives or interests - it leaves Americans sick & America alone," Mr Mendez said in a tweet.

"We are monitoring the outbreaks in China, we are watching that closely and in partnership with the Chinese authorities and Mongolian authorities," Margaret Harris, a spokeswoman for the public health agency said Tuesday during a United Nations press briefing, Al-Jazeera reports. Harris noted that, "Bubonic plague has been with us and is always with us, for centuries," and the WHO is not currently "considering it high-risk."

Trump pushes state, local leaders to reopen schools in fallPresident Donald Trump on Tuesday launched an all-out effort pressing state and local officials to reopen schools this fall, arguing that some are keeping schools closed not because of the risks from the coronavirus pandemic but for political reasons. "They think it's going to be good for them politically, so they keep the schools closed," Trump said at a White House discussion on school plans for the fall. The White House's round-table gathered health and education leaders from across the nation who said schools and colleges are ready to open this fall and can do so safely.

Mark Meadows, Trump's chief of staff, says the president is considering more orders in coming days dealing with topics such as immigration, jobs and China.

Arati Kreibich Is Taking On “Trump’s Favorite Democrat” In New Jersey

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:20 AM PDT

Arati Kreibich Is Taking On In many primary elections nationwide, progressive challengers are running to kick out ineffective, centrist Democrats who have failed to meet their constituents' needs. For Dr. Arati Kreibich — who is challenging Rep. Josh Gottheimer in New Jersey's 5th Congressional District in today's primary — it's personal: She volunteered to reelect her opponent two years ago. But after he voted to give funding to Trump's border wall, Kreibich decided she had had enough of "Trump's favorite Democrat," as she labeled him. (Check out joshgottheimer.republican, a website her campaign set up.)Dr. Kreibich, who came to the U.S. from India at age 11, is a neuroscientist whose research focuses on opiate addiction. She became politically active after Trump was elected in 2016, when she successfully ran for the Glen Rock, NJ, borough council, and became its first South Asian member. Unlike Gottheimer, she supports policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal, and she says her district has changed a lot in the past few years and is ready for a progressive in Congress.Ahead, we spoke with Kreibich about why she believes North Jersey needs new leadership, Trump's response to COVID-19, her children, and more. Why do you believe Rep. Josh Gottheimer needs to be replaced?"When my opponent voted to fund Trump's border wall, voted against the Iran War Powers resolution, and fought to bail out predatory lenders in the midst of this pandemic crisis, he betrayed the real Democratic values of my community. North Jersey needs a leader who will fight for universal healthcare and paid family leave, who will advocate for a Green New Deal, and who will stand up to Trump, not side with him 76.7% of the time. We need a leader to stay true to our values, to lead by example, and to govern as a real Democrat."You've been backed by progressive figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders. Why do you believe that it's time for a new type of Democrat to step up and lead? What has been the biggest challenge about being a primary challenger?"In these unprecedented times, we need representatives who are willing to take bold action. Young people in NJ-5 and across our nation are calling for leaders who will protect their future on this planet and advocate for equity and justice. As a primary challenger, I've faced obstacle after obstacle since the day that I announced my campaign, but far more noteworthy is the support our movement has garnered from Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Indivisible, Sunrise Movement, Working Families Party, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and dozens of other groups who know it's worth electing a real Democrat in NJ-5."> TeamArati up bright and early today to get out the vote! pic.twitter.com/4q8S1z8Hyg> > — Dr. Arati Kreibich for Congress (@Arati4Congress) July 7, 2020You've said that you decided to run for Congress when Josh Gottheimer backed Trump's anti-immigrant agenda. What immigration policies would you support?"When my opponent sided with Trump to oppose protections for kids in cages, I knew I needed to step up and run myself. Welcoming immigrants is central to America's core values, and our immigration policy should reflect that. I support creating a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in our country. As an immigrant myself, I know what it's like to migrate to our country looking to build a better life for yourself and your family. America has room for all of us, but we must fight to ensure we all truly belong."What is the hardest thing about raising your sons in this era of crisis?"Raising my sons in this time of near-constant crisis is difficult. I worry about them and their future on this planet. While I worry about their emotional resilience and about their mental health, I also worry about the children who do not have the support systems and opportunities that my children have. When my children ask me what I am doing to make a difference, I want to be able to say honestly that I am doing everything in my power to protect them, our planet, and every community that is under attack by our current administration."As a scientist and medical researcher, where do you believe the U.S. has failed the most in responding to COVID-19? What are our biggest opportunities in terms of solving the crisis?"We have failed to heed the warnings of scientists and public health experts. Had the Trump administration listened to scientists and experts, instead of ignoring them, acted sooner, and made decisions based on data, we could have saved thousands of lives. New Jersey has picked up the slack where the federal government has failed us, but we have already seen in other parts of the country what will happen if we reopen too quickly. Moving forward, we can save lives and livelihoods if we increase testing, provide direct cash payments of $2,000 a month for the duration of the crisis, and institute a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures."Don't forget to register to vote.Like what you see? Lebanon's rising power cuts add to gloom of economic crisisLebanese are buying candles in bulk, turning to traditional kerosene lamps and throwing away rotten food because of prolonged power cuts that plunged the country into darkness this week, adding to the gloom of a deepening economic crisis. The country's electricity company and the powerful operators of generators had been rationing power since late June as fuel supplies dwindle amid uncertainty over the next shipment. "At home I can live with the candle, but in my clinic what can I do?" said Salim Abi Saleh, a gynecologist and the head of the physicians union in the northern city of Tripoli.

Rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, linked to COVID-19

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:14 AM PDT

Rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, linked to COVID-19The patient in the case report (let's call him Tom) was 54 and in good health. For two days in May, he felt unwell and was too weak to get out of bed. When his family finally brought him to the hospital, doctors found that he had a fever and signs of a severe infection, or sepsis. He tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 infection. In addition to symptoms of COVID-19, he was also too weak to move his legs. When a neurologist examined him, Tom was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes abnormal sensation and weakness due to delays in sending signals through the nerves. Usually reversible, in severe cases it can cause prolonged paralysis involving breathing muscles, require ventilator support and sometimes leave permanent neurological deficits. Early recognition by expert neurologists is key to proper treatment. We are neurologists specializing in intensive care and leading studies related to neurological complications from COVID-19. Given the occurrence of Guillain-Barre Syndrome in prior pandemics with other corona viruses like SARS and MERS, we are investigating a possible link between Guillain-Barre Syndrome and COVID-19 and tracking published reports to see if there is any link between Guillain-Barre Syndrome and COVID-19. Some patients may not seek timely medical care for neurological symptoms like prolonged headache, vision loss and new muscle weakness due to fear of getting exposed to virus in the emergency setting. People need to know that medical facilities have taken full precautions to protect patients. Seeking timely medical evaluation for neurological symptoms can help treat many of these diseases. What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?Guillain-Barre syndrome occurs when the body's own immune system attacks and injures the nerves outside of the spinal cord or brain – the peripheral nervous system. Most commonly, the injury involves the protective sheath, or myelin, that wraps nerves and is essential to nerve function. Without the myelin sheath, signals that go through a nerve are slowed or lost, which causes the nerve to malfunction. To diagnose Guillain-Barre Syndrome, neurologists perform a detailed neurological exam. Due to the nerve injury, patients often may have loss of reflexes on examination. Doctors often need to perform a lumbar puncture, otherwise known as spinal tap, to sample spinal fluid and look for signs of inflammation and abnormal antibodies. Studies have shown that giving patients an infusion of antibodies derived from donated blood or plasma exchange – a process that cleans patients' blood of harmful antibodies - can speed up recovery. A very small subset of patients may need these therapies long-term. [Get facts about coronavirus and the latest research. However, some patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome have lingering symptoms including weakness and abnormal sensations in arms and/or legs; rarely patients may be bedridden or disabled long-term. Guillain-Barre Syndrome and pandemicsAs the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps across the globe, many neurologic specialists have been on the lookout for potentially serious nervous system complications such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome.Though Guillain-Barre Syndrome is rare, it is well known to emerge following bacterial infections, such as Campylobacter jejuni, a common cause of food poisoning, and a multitude of viral infections including the flu virus, Zika virus and other coronaviruses. Studies showed an increase in Guillain-Barre Syndrome cases following the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, suggesting a possible connection. The presumed cause for this link is that the body's own immune response to fight the infection turns on itself and attacks the peripheral nerves. This is called an "autoimmune" condition. When a pandemic affects as many people as our current COVID-19 crisis, even a rare complication can become a significant public health problem. That is especially true for one that causes neurological dysfunction where the recovery takes a long time and may be incomplete. The first reports of Guillain-Barre Syndrome in COVID-19 pandemic originated from Italy, Spain and China, where the pandemic surged before the U.S. crisis. Though there is clear clinical suspicion that COVID-19 can lead to Guillain-Barre Syndrome, many important questions remain. What are the chances that someone gets Guillain-Barre Syndrome during or following a COVID-19 infection? Does Guillain-Barre Syndrome happen more often in those who have been infected with COVID-19 compared to other types of infections, such as the flu? The only way to get answers is through a prospective study where doctors perform systematic surveillance and collect data on a large group of patients. There are ongoing large research consortia hard at work to figure out answers to these questions. Understanding the association between COVID-19 and Guillain-Barre SyndromeWhile large research studies are underway, overall it appears that Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare but serious phenomenon possibly linked to COVID-19. Given that more than 10.7 million cases have been reported for COVID-19, there have been 10 reported cases of COVID-19 patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome so far – only two reported cases in the U.S., five in Italy, two cases in Iran and one from Wuhan, China. It is certainly possible that there are other cases that have not been reported. The Global Consortium Study of Neurological Dysfunctions in COVID-19 is actively underway to find out how often neurological problems like Guillain-Barre Syndrome is seen in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Also, just because Guillain-Barre Syndrome occurs in a patient diagnosed with COVID-19, that does not imply that it was caused by the virus; this still may be a coincident occurrence. More research is needed to understand how the two events are related. Due to the pandemic and infection-containment considerations, diagnostic tests, such as a nerve conduction study that used to be routine for patients with suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome, are more difficult to do. In both U.S. cases, the initial diagnosis and treatment were all based on clinical examination by a neurological experts rather than any tests. Both patients survived but with significant residual weakness at the time these case reports came out, but that is not uncommon for Guillain-Barre Syndrome patients. The road to recovery may sometimes be long, but many patients can make a full recovery with time.Though the reported cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome so far all have severe symptoms, this is not uncommon in a pandemic situation where the less sick patients may stay home and not present for medical care for fear of being exposed to the virus. This, plus the limited COVID-19 testing capability across the U.S., may skew our current detection of Guillain-Barre Syndrome cases toward the sicker patients who have to go to a hospital. In general, the majority of Guillain-Barre Syndrome patients do recover, given enough time. We do not yet know whether this is true for COVID-19-related cases at this stage of the pandemic. We and colleagues around the world are working around the clock to find answers to these critical questions. This article is republished from The Conversation, a nonprofit news site dedicated to sharing ideas from academic experts.Read more: * Which drugs and therapies are proven to work, and which ones don't, for COVID-19? * COVID-19's deadliness for men is revealing why researchers should have been studying immune system sex differences years agoSherry H-Y. Iraq mourns renowned terrorism expert killed by gunmenA leading Iraqi security analyst and critic of rogue Iran-backed militias was gunned down outside his Baghdad home on Monday, in an assassination that could test the government's resolve to rein in armed groups. Hisham al-Hashimi, 47, was fatally shot by gunmen on motorcycles in the Zeyouneh neighbourhood of Baghdad on Monday evening, security footage showed, in a crime condemned by Iraq's new premier, who knew Hashimi personally. "We will not allow assassinations to return to Iraq," Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi said on Twitter, where Hashimi's name was trending locally. An informal adviser to Mr Kadhimi and formerly to the anti-Islamic State coalition, Hashimi was widely cited in western media, including The Telegraph. He authored several books on jihadist groups and worked with international think tanks, including the Center for Global Policy in Washington, DC. As many Iraqi Twitter users changed their avatars to Hashimi's picture, footage showed a funeral procession carrying his coffin draped in an Iraqi flag. British ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hickey offered condolences, calling Hashimi a "thoughtful and brave man". "The government - supported by the international community - must hold the perpetrators to account," Mr Hickey wrote on Twitter. Hashimi previously received death threats from Islamic State for his reporting on the Sunni extremist group, but recently told friends he feared assassination from rogue militias, who he said posed a risk to the state. Iraq's formal paramilitary organisation, which is dominated by Iran-backed groups, called for an investigation into Hashimi's death. There was no claim of responsibility but many Iraqis suspected militiamen. "Everyone in Iraq knows who did it," AlHurra News correspondent Steven Nabil wrote on Twitter, accusing "Iranian-backed militias" . Since taking office in May, Mr Kadhimi has vowed to rein in militias and protect western diplomatic and military facilities from attack from Iran-backed groups, whose strength threatens the government's relationship with the United States and other western states. Last month, Mr Kadhimi ordered a raid against militiamen accused of planning an attack on Baghdad's Green Zone. Iraqi security forces arrested 14 members of Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group listed as a terrorist organisation by the United States. All but one were soon released though, in what was seen as capitulation by the government. Video showed the freed militiamen celebrating by stamping on pictures of Mr Kadhimi. In January, the United States struck a blow to Kataib Hizbollah by killing its leader, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, alongside Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in a drone strike outside Baghdad airport. The strike prompted an outcry, with Iraq's parliament voting to demand US troops leave Iraq. On Monday, a United Nations human rights investigator said the strike was illegal under international law. The United States failed to provide sufficient evidence of an ongoing or imminent attack against its interests to justify the strike, said UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions Agnes Callamard.
