Attacks on army, police and U.S. special forces kill 50 in Kabul Posted: 08 Aug 2015 03:22 PM PDT By Mirwais Harooni and Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - A wave of attacks on the Afghan army and police and U.S. special forces in Kabul have killed at least 50 people and wounded hundreds, dimming hopes that the Taliban might be weakened by a leadership struggle after their longtime leader's death. The bloodshed began on Friday with a truck bomb that exploded in a heavily populated district of the capital and ended with an hours-long battle at a base used by U.S. special forces. It became the deadliest day in Kabul for years. |

Three soldiers from the United Arab Emirates were reported killed while taking part in the Saudi-led military campaign against the Houthis, UAE state news agency WAM said on Saturday. Southern militia sources said they had been killed by landmines planted by the Houthis while entering Zinjibar. |

Suspected Jewish attackers torched the home of Saad Dawabsheh in the West Bank village of Duma on July 31, killing his 18-month-old child and seriously injuring his wife and a second son, an act that Israel's prime minister described as terrorism. A spokeswoman for Soroka hospital in Israel where Dawabsheh had been receiving treatment said he died early on Saturday. |
At least 12 dead as Mali siege ends, some U.N. workers freed Posted: 08 Aug 2015 03:35 PM PDT By Emma Farge and Adama Diarra BAMAKO (Reuters) - At least 12 people were killed during a nearly 24-hour siege of a hotel in central Mali seized by suspected Islamist gunmen that ended on Saturday as security forces stormed the building and released some of the United Nations workers trapped inside. Four U.N. contractors were freed in the pre-dawn raid, but Mali's U.N. peacekeeping operation MINUSMA said five people associated with the mission had died, while Malian officials counted three hostages dead. The gunmen had seized the Byblos Hotel in the town of Sevare, around 600 km (375 miles) northeast of the West African nation's capital Bamako, early on Friday and held off government troops who quickly surrounded the building. |
