German lawmakers back Greek bailout despite rebellion; Tsipras sacks dissenters Posted: 17 Jul 2015 01:31 PM PDT German lawmakers gave their go-ahead on Friday for the euro zone to negotiate a third bailout for Greece, but a warning from Chancellor Angela Merkel that the alternative was chaos failed to prevent a hefty rebellion in her own party. The Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, whose backing was essential for the talks to start, decisively approved the move by 439 votes to 119, but almost a fifth of Merkel's conservatives voted 'No'. Popular misgivings run deep in Germany, the euro zone country that has already contributed most to Greece's two bailouts since 2010, about funneling yet more aid to Athens. |
Dozens flee homes as wildfires rage in Greece, PM urges calm Posted: 17 Jul 2015 11:51 AM PDT By Yannis Behrakis ATHENS (Reuters) - Forest fires fanned by strong winds and high temperatures broke out around Athens and in other parts of southern Greece on Friday, sending residents fleeing from flames threatening their homes. Summer wildfires, though common for the season, heaped additional misery on the government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, which is struggling to obtain a new bailout from foreign creditors. The police said 52 separate fires had broken out on four main fronts in a region stretching from the island of Evia, northeast of Athens, to the southern Peloponnese. |
Mexico arrests seven officials over escape of drug kingpin Posted: 17 Jul 2015 03:44 PM PDT The Mexican Attorney General's office said on Friday it had arrested seven officials over suspected involvement in the jail break of drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Guzman's escape last Saturday from a maximum security prison through a mile-long tunnel built into his cell was a profound embarrassment for President Enrique Peña Nieto, raising pressure on the government to do more to battle public sector corruption. As the tunnel surfaced in a blind spot in the cell behind a shower wall, government officials said it could only have occurred with the collusion of prison guards and officials, and that Guzman's helpers must have seen the building's plans. |
Ukraine points finger at Russia as families mark downing of MH17 Posted: 17 Jul 2015 08:34 AM PDT By Maria Tsvetkova HRABOVE, Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukraine's president accused Russia's military on Friday of ordering the missile strike that brought down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 one year ago, as relatives gathered from the Netherlands to Australia to remember the 298 passengers and crew. "MH17, where 298 victims were killed for no reason, was shot down by a Russian BUK missile, launched by a Russian professional crew under an order and an instruction from the Russian military," President Petro Poroshenko said on the first anniversary of the disaster. Ukraine has consistently blamed Russia, but Poroshenko's comments were his most direct to date. |
Islamic State claims suicide car bomb that kills more than 100 in Iraq Posted: 17 Jul 2015 02:57 PM PDT More than 100 people were killed in a suicide car bombing at a busy market in an Iraqi town on Friday, in one of the deadliest attacks carried out by Islamic State militants since they overran large parts of the country. The blast brought down several buildings in Khan Bani Saad, about 30 km (20 miles) northeast of Baghdad, crushing to death people who were celebrating the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, police and medics said. Islamic State, which controls large parts of northern and western Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack in the mixed eastern province of Diyala where Khan Bani Saad is located and said the target was "rejectionists", as the group refers to Shi'ite Muslims. |
Islamic State used poison gas in northeast Syria: Kurds, monitor Posted: 17 Jul 2015 04:11 PM PDT The Islamic State group used poison gas in attacks against Kurdish-controlled areas of northeastern Syria in late June, a Syrian Kurdish militia and a group monitoring the Syrian conflict said on Saturday. The YPG militia said Islamic State had fired "makeshift chemical projectiles" on June 28 at a YPG-controlled area of the city of Hasaka, and at YPG positions south of the town of Tel Brak to the northeast of Hasaka city. Redur Xelil, the YPG spokesman, said the type of chemical used had not been definitively determined. |
Buckingham Palace slams images of queen's 'Nazi salute' as child Posted: 17 Jul 2015 04:44 PM PDT Buckingham Palace voiced disappointment after a British newspaper on Saturday published images allegedly showing a young Queen Elizabeth II giving a Nazi salute in the early 1930s. The front page of The Sun showed the queen, then aged around six, raising her right hand in the air as her mother, the late Queen Mother, does the same. The headline on the story read: "Their Royal Heilnesses" -- a reference to the "Heil Hitler" greeting used in Nazi Germany. |

Mexican president faces music after drug lord's prison break Posted: 17 Jul 2015 04:16 PM PDT Mexico's president faced a public relations nightmare Friday as he confronted fallout from the escape of a notorious drug lord, but said he was "fully confident" the kingpin would be recaptured. As President Enrique Pena Nieto returned from France, seven prison officials from the jail where Guzman escaped were charged over the affair and taken to a federal detention center. Pena Nieto had been flying to France Saturday when word broke that Guzman had escaped -- for the second time in 14 years. |

Statoil says crude on derailed BNSF train complied with volatility limit Posted: 17 Jul 2015 03:47 PM PDT By Kristen Hays HOUSTON (Reuters) - The North Dakota crude on a Berkshire Hathaway Inc-owned BNSF Railway Co train that derailed this week in Montana was produced by Norway's Statoil and complied with regulations that limit flammability, a Statoil spokesman said on Friday. Statoil spokesman Peter Symons said the crude was "fully compliant" with North Dakota regulations imposed in April that limit vapor pressure in crude before it is loaded into railcars for transport to market. The state has used vapor pressure as a proxy for measuring the amount of flammable natural gas liquids that are present in crude that can ignite in a crash. |

Memorials for MH17 victims as calls grow for justice Posted: 17 Jul 2015 02:55 PM PDT Relatives of those killed when flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine exactly a year ago joined emotional memorials on Friday as calls mounted for a UN-backed tribunal to prosecute those responsible for the tragedy. All 298 passengers and crew -- the majority of them Dutch -- died on July 17 last year when the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was downed over rebel-held east Ukraine during heavy fighting between Kiev's armed forces and pro-Russian separatists. Flags flew at half-mast in the Netherlands as about 2,000 relatives and friends gathered at a ceremony in Nieuwegein to mourn the victims of the disaster, many of whom were children on their way to summer holidays. |

Sources in Kiev said the conversation between Francois Hollande, Angela Merkel, Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko -- the first since April 30 -- lasted for more than two hours and focused on finally halting the 15-month separatist crisis in the former Soviet state. The warring sides had struck a ceasefire deal in February but Poroshenko on Friday complained about pro-Russian insurgents' refusal to honour the five-month truce. |

Despite lengthy discussions with Italian authorities the migrants on a boat operated by medical charity Doctors Without Borders, were turned away due to a "lack of capacity in the Italian (migrant) reception system," said a statement from the group. Italy is struggling to host more than 80,000 migrants who have crossed the Mediterranean fleeing war, persecution or poverty in the Middle East and Africa. |
