Ukraine's new leader stands up to Moscow over Crimea and Europe Posted: 07 Jun 2014 06:27 AM PDT By Richard Balmforth KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine's new president Petro Poroshenko said his country would never give up Crimea and would not compromise on its path towards closer ties with Europe, spelling out a defiant message to Russia in his inaugural speech on Saturday. The 48-year-old billionaire took the oath of office before parliament, buoyed by Western support but facing a crisis in relations with Russia as a separatist uprising seethes in the east of his country. Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in March, weeks after street protests ousted Poroshenko's pro-Moscow predecessor Viktor Yanukovich, in a move that has provoked the deepest crisis in relations with the West since the Cold War. "Citizens of Ukraine will never enjoy the beauty of peace unless we settle our relations with Russia. |
Baghdad car bombs kill 60; militants storm Ramadi university Posted: 07 Jun 2014 01:55 PM PDT By Kareem Raheem and Kamal Naama BAGHDAD/RAMADI Iraq (Reuters) - A wave of car bombs exploded across Baghdad on Saturday, killing more than 60 people, and militants stormed a university campus in western Iraq, security and medical sources said. No group immediately claimed responsibility for any of the bombings, but the Shi'ite community is a frequent target for Sunni Islamist insurgents who have been regaining ground and momentum in Iraq over the past year. Since Thursday alone, militants have seized parts of Ramadi and Falluja, the two main cities in the mainly Sunni Anbar province. Critics of Iraq's Shi'ite-led government say its treatment of the once-dominant Sunni minority is the main driver of the insurgency. |
Dozens killed in massacre in eastern Congo Posted: 07 Jun 2014 01:17 PM PDT By Crispin Kyalangalilwa SOUTH KIVU Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Up to 37 people including women and children were killed in Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern province of South Kivu on Saturday in an attack that government officials blamed on a dispute over cattle. It was about a dispute over cows," South Kivu governor Marcellin Cishambo told Reuters. Government spokesman Laurent Mende said the incident was a revenge attack by the community of a cattle herder killed during an attempt to steal cows belonging to another farmer. SECOND ATTACK South Kivu, a mountainous region rich in minerals including gold, is home to members of tribes who fled neighbouring Burundi after the end of a civil war in 2005 as well as numerous rebel groups, including the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). |
Oil tanker missing off Ghana coast amid report of piracy Posted: 07 Jun 2014 03:21 PM PDT By Kwasi Kpodo ACCRA (Reuters) - A Liberia-flagged oil tanker has gone missing off the coast of Ghana and a senior port official told Reuters on Saturday the captain sent a distress call to say the vessel was attacked by pirates. The Liberia-flagged MT Fair Artemis last made contact with its manager, Fairdeal Group S.A., at 6 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Wednesday when it was operating off the coast of Ghana, the company said. We would like to assure their families and all stakeholders that we are fully committed to returning the crew and vessel to a safe port," said Fairdeal fleet director John Gray in a statement. A senior official at the port in Tema, east of Ghana's capital, told Reuters: "We had a distress call from the master of the ship yesterday (Friday) saying he was 36 nautical miles away from our waters after he was hijacked and looted in Togolese waters early Wednesday." The official declined to be identified. |
Kosovo's Thaci bids for third term, voters angry over poverty, graft Posted: 07 Jun 2014 04:13 PM PDT By Matt Robinson and Fatos Bytyci PRISTINA (Reuters) - Former guerrilla Hashim Thaci bids for a third term as prime minister of Kosovo on Sunday, under pressure from voters angry over poverty and corruption and a war crimes investigation that threatens to ensnare his former comrades-in-arms. Some analysts expect the closest election race since Thaci presided over Kosovo's Western-backed secession from Serbia in 2008. Frustration with Kosovo's progress since independence is running high among many of its 1.8 million people, who rank among Europe's poorest. "The result of this election is the most uncertain of any election so far in Kosovo," said political analyst Astrit Gashi. |
Afghan election front-runner escapes assassination attempt Posted: 07 Jun 2014 01:46 PM PDT By Mirwais Harooni and Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - Abdullah Abdullah, front-runner in Afghanistan's presidential election, escaped assassination on Friday when two bombs blew up outside a hotel where he had just staged a rally, killing six people. The midday blasts, one caused by a suicide bomber, destroyed a car in Abdullah's convoy, police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said. Abdullah, a former leader of the opposition to the Islamist Taliban, came first in the largely peaceful first round of the poll to replace Hamid Karzai, winning 45 percent of the vote. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on Abdullah but the Taliban, seeking to set up an Islamic state, have vowed to disrupt the election. |

Stalemate as England held by Honduras Posted: 07 Jun 2014 04:32 PM PDT England were held to a goalless draw by ten-man Honduras on Saturday in their final friendly before heading to Brazil for the World Cup. Roy Hodgson's team had the better chances in a largely scrappy game which was interrupted in the first half by a 43-minute suspension of play due to a severe lightning warning. Honduras had Brayan Beckeles sent off in the 66th minute for a second bookable offence but will take heart from a battling display and a clean sheet after losing their previous two warm-up games 4-2 to Israel and 2-0 to Turkey. England created several openings but failed to take advantage with Daniel Sturridge the main culprit. |

Brazil leader slams 'campaign' against World Cup Posted: 07 Jun 2014 03:54 PM PDT A strike by subway workers snarling Brazil's biggest city Sao Paulo threatened Saturday to disrupt the World Cup with the kickoff in the city just five days away. The stoppage over a wage claim by staff has caused misery for commuters since Thursday in Brazil's business hub of 20 million people. With Brazil hosting Croatia in the brand new but much delayed Corinthians Arena, fans are set to become caught up in the chaos as some 70,000 people descend on the stadium unless a swift end to the dispute is reached. Overnight, with disgruntled Brazilians protesting the cost of the Cup, sport and politics became enmeshed once again as President Dilma Rousseff denounced a "systematic campaign" against her government and the tournament. |
