Belgians seize key suspects in Paris, Brussels attacks Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:27 PM PDT By Robert-Jan Bartunek and Alastair Macdonald BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgian police detained two key suspects on Friday in the Islamic State attacks on Paris and Brussels as operations go on to track down militants who have fought with or take direction from leaders in Syria. Mohamed Abrini, a Belgian thought to have helped prepare the Nov. 13 bombing and shooting attack that killed 130 people in the French capital, was held with two others, prosecutors said. Aged 31, Abrini was seized close to the Brussels borough of Molenbeek, where he was long known to police for petty crimes. |
North Korea leader Kim supervises engine test for ICBM: KCNA Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:59 PM PDT North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a successful test of a new engine for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), its state media said on Saturday in the latest claim of making advances in its arms program that has brought U.N. sanctions. Tension has remained high on the Korean peninsula after the North's nuclear test and a long-range rocket launch earlier in the year and South Korean and U.S. troops conducted large-scale joint drills amid harsh rhetoric from both rival Koreas. The engine was ignited at Kim's command and released a fiery blast, and the test showed the indigenously designed rocket fulfilled all required conditions, KCNA said. |
More migrants return to Turkey from Greece under EU pact Posted: 08 Apr 2016 12:15 PM PDT By Dasha Afanasieva DIKILI, Turkey (Reuters) - Two ferries carrying more than 120 migrants returned to Turkey from the Greek island of Lesbos on Friday, in the second round of arrivals under an EU deal with Ankara to stem mass migration to Europe across the Aegean Sea. The accord, which came into force on Monday, aims to help end a chaotic influx into the European Union of migrants and refugees, most fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and beyond, after more than 1 million arrived last year. Around 325 people have now been sent back from the Greek islands under the accord, which the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) has condemned and rights advocates say may violate international law. |
South Korea missile-defense deployment 'going to happen': Carter Posted: 08 Apr 2016 01:18 PM PDT Deployment of a new U.S. missile-defense system to South Korea "is going to happen," U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday, adding that China should do more to counter North Korea's missile development rather than complain about U.S. plans. The United States and South Korea began talks on possible deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system after North Korea tested its fourth nuclear bomb on Jan. 6 and launched a long-range rocket on Feb. 7. |
Syria's Assad shows no willingness to compromise Posted: 08 Apr 2016 01:33 PM PDT By Samia Nakhoul CAIRO (Reuters)- - As the Syria peace talks resume next week, President Bashar al-Assad, backed militarily by Iran and Russia, shows no willingness to compromise, much less step aside to allow a transition Western powers claim is the solution to the conflict. Threatened by rebel advances last year, Assad is now pumped up with confidence after Russian air strikes reversed the tide and enabled his army to recover lost ground from Sunni insurgents as well as the jihadis of Islamic State. While Syria experts doubt he can recapture the whole country without an unlikely full-scale ground intervention by Russia and Iran, they also doubt President Vladimir Putin will force him out - unless there is a clear path to stability, which could take years. |
Panama president, France's Hollande speak post leak, table finmin meet Posted: 08 Apr 2016 11:34 AM PDT Panama said on Friday President Juan Carlos Varela had spoken with his French counterpart Francois Hollande following a diplomatic standoff over a mass data leak, and had agreed their finance ministers should meet to discuss cooperation. Panama's government said in a statement the pair had proposed the meeting take place in Paris. Panama warned earlier this week it could retaliate after France announced it would put the Central American nation back on its blacklist of uncooperative tax jurisdictions, following a major leak of documents from a Panamanian law firm. |

Spieth hangs on to Masters lead, but just barely Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:38 PM PDT |
Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:26 PM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Saturday it has successfully tested the engine of a new intercontinental ballistic rocket that will give it the ability to stage nuclear strikes on the United States. The test, if true, would be a big step forward for the North's nuclear weapons program, which saw its fourth atomic test earlier this year. But the North may still need a good deal of work before it can strike the U.S. mainland with nuclear missiles. South Korean officials say North Korea doesn't yet have a reliable intercontinental ballistic missile, let alone the ability to arm it with a nuclear warhead. |

King Salman announces Saudi-Egypt bridge in rare Cairo visit Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:20 PM PDT Saudi King Salman on Friday announced plans to build a bridge over the Red Sea to Egypt, in a lavish show of support for the government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The 80-year-old monarch is on a rare five-day trip to Egypt, a country that Riyadh views as a cornerstone to its ambitions in the changing region. Saudi Arabia has been the key backer of Sisi since 2013, when the then-army chief overthrew his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood movement was viewed with suspicion by Riyadh. |
Pacquiao heavier for Bradley farewell Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:19 PM PDT Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao comfortably made the weight for his farewell fight against Timothy Bradley on Friday as anticipation built towards their Las Vegas showdown. In front of several thousand fans crammed into the MGM Grand Garden Arena, a smiling Pacquiao (57-6-2) tipped the scales at 145.5 pounds, half a pound heavier than his weight for his last fight against Floyd Mayweather in May last year. Bradley, 33-1-1, was a pound heavier at 146.5, well within the 147-pound limit for Saturday's non-title welterweight bout. |
Group: Disputed Haiti presidential vote generally free, fair Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:18 PM PDT PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A Washington-based think tank said Friday it found last year's presidential first-round election in Haiti to be generally fair and free of fraud, contrasting sharply with allegations of rampant vote-rigging by Haitian observer groups. |
Asian nations seeking closer US ties over China: Pentagon Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:15 PM PDT Asian countries are seeking to strengthen military ties with the United States in the face of Beijing's expansionist ambitions in the South China Sea, Pentagon chief Ashton Carter said Friday ahead of a regional visit that will not include a China stop. "Almost all the nations there are asking us to do more with them... bilaterally and multilaterally," Carter told the Council on Foreign Relations think tank in New York, before he heads off on a trip next week that includes India and the Philippines. "Indeed, in the South China Sea, China's actions are raising regional tensions," added Carter, who was invited to Beijing and accepted a visit sometime in the spring. |
Archbishop of Canterbury reveals he was born illegitimate Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:12 PM PDT The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has confirmed that he is the illegitimate son of a one-time private secretary to Winston Churchill, after a newspaper reported the discovery late Friday. Welby, the most senior figure in the Anglican Communion consisting of some 85 million Christians globally, said the news, reported in Saturday's edition of the Daily Telegraph, had come as a "complete surprise". "In the last month I have discovered that my biological father is not Gavin Welby but, in fact, the late Sir Anthony Montague Browne. |
Djibouti President re-elected: PM Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:07 PM PDT Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh, in power since 1999, was re-elected Friday for a fourth mandate, the prime minister announced, following an election boycotted by some opposition parties. "According to our projections, we can say that the UMP candidate (Guelleh of the Union for the Presidential Majority) has been elected in the first round" following Friday's election, Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed announced on national television. As with the previous election in 2011, the announcement was made before all the votes were in, but with the 68-year-old Guelleh said to be easily above the 50 percent threshold required to avoid a second-round of voting. |
U.S. Catholics welcome Pope's love treatise but want clarity Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:07 PM PDT By Gina Cherelus NEW YORK (Reuters) - When retired New York City teacher Rosalie Frangella's marriage ended in the 1980s, she might one day have hoped to wed again - except for the big money that her local Catholic church wanted in order to issue her with an annulment. "It's on hold because I'm waiting to hear what Pope Francis says about the finances." Going to the heart of how divorced adherents are treated, Pope Francis called in a lengthy document on Friday for a more compassionate approach toward "imperfect" Catholics, saying "no one can be condemned forever." The pontiff's eagerly-anticipated work was broadly welcomed by those U.S. followers who have been made to feel alienated by the Church's rules on divorce, although the treatise lacked details of how that would work in practice and did not touch on Church funding. |

Iceland parliament rejects motion of no confidence in government Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:03 PM PDT By Ragnhildur Sigurdadottir REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Iceland's parliament rejected an opposition motion of no confidence in the government on Friday after the prime minister resigned and autumn early elections were announced. Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson stepped down on Tuesday after documents leaked from a Panamanian law firm linked him to an offshore company that held millions of dollars in debt from failed Icelandic banks. The center-right coalition named Fisheries Minister Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson as prime minister and called for early elections to be held in the autumn. |
Offshore trust admission deepens British PM's problems Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:03 PM PDT By Elizabeth Piper LONDON (Reuters) - David Cameron had hoped to focus on campaigning to keep Britain in the EU before a referendum in June, but questions about his wealth, government spending and a steel crisis have blurred the prime minister's message. After four days and four different statements over his late father's inclusion in the "Panama Papers", Cameron said on Thursday he once had a stake in his father's offshore trust and had profited from it, spurring calls for the leader to resign. It is unlikely Cameron will follow Iceland's prime minister and leave office over the documents, which show how the world's rich and powerful stash their wealth, but the blow to his image could hurt his campaign to persuade Britons to stay in the European Union. |
El Salvador raids Mossack Fonseca office, seizes documents Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:03 PM PDT Authorities in El Salvador on Friday raided the local offices of Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, seizing documents and equipment, the country's attorney general's office said. The Panama-based law firm is at the center of an international data leak scandal that has embarrassed several world leaders and shone a spotlight on the shadowy world of offshore companies. "A large quantity of computing equipment has been found in the office of Mossack Fonseca," the attorney general's office said on Twitter, adding that the company's staff had removed their sign from the entrance a day earlier. |
Cypriot lender RCB says Deutsche Bank decision to cut ties unrelated to Panama Papers Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:03 PM PDT Cyprus-based RCB Bank denied on Friday that a reported decision by Deutsche Bank to disengage from the Cypriot lender was connected to the Panama Papers affair. Bloomberg news agency reported earlier Friday that Deutsche Bank had decided to end ties with RCB and that disengagement would be expedited after last weekend's massive data leak from a Panama-based law firm prompted allegations that the Cyprus-based bank helped a person close to Vladimir Putin to amass fortunes. RCB has denied any wrongdoing and said the individual, named in Britain's Guardian newspaper as musician Sergei Roldugin, had never been a client either directly or as a beneficiary in any company maintaining an account with the bank. |
North Korea says successfully tested ICBM engine Posted: 08 Apr 2016 04:02 PM PDT North Korea said Saturday it had successfully tested an engine designed for an inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) that would "guarantee" an eventual nuclear strike on the US mainland. It was the latest in a series of claims by Pyongyang of significant breakthroughs in both its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes. Outside experts have treated a number of the claims with scepticism, suggesting the North Korean leadership is attempting to talk up its achievements ahead of a showcase ruling party congress next month. |
Israel sharpens Turkey travel warning over 'immediate threats' Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:57 PM PDT Israel Friday reissued and accentuated a warning to its citizens to avoid Turkey over the "immediate risks" of attacks, weeks after three Israelis were killed in an Istanbul suicide bombing. "Following a situational assessment, we are reiterating and sharpening the high level of threat in Turkey," the counter terrorism bureau said. Its warning comes hours after the Turkish foreign ministry announced "progress towards finalising the agreement" on restoring ties with Israel, a day after both sides held talks in London. |

Poll shows Brazil's PMDB deputies shift on Rousseff impeachment chances Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:37 PM PDT Nearly 40 percent of lawmakers from Brazil's most powerful party that recently broke with President Dilma Rousseff's ruling coalition do not think she will be impeached, a survey released on Friday showed. The finding by consulting firm Arko Advice showed a turnaround within the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, which just over a week ago appeared extremely confident that Rousseff would be pushed from office and that Vice President Michel Temer, the PMDB's leader, would take her place. Asked if they thought Rousseff would be forced from office, 52 percent of the PMDB respondents said yes, 39 percent said no and 9 percent said they did not have a defined opinion yet. |

Rajaonarimampianina won elections in 2013 but has been beset by opposition to his rule, with lawmakers trying to unseat him for alleged constitutional violations and incompetence. |
