Man charged in eight bomb threats, part of five waves against Jewish centers this year Posted: 03 Mar 2017 11:53 AM PST A boyfriend trying to vilify his ex-girlfriend after a breakup is charged with being behind at least eight of the bomb threats made in five waves over the past two months against Jewish Community Centers, including one threat to the Anti-Defamation League in New York, according to federal officials. Juan Thompson was arrested in St. Louis, Mo., and is due to appear in a Missouri federal court on Friday to face a charge of cyberstalking. Prosecutors said Mr. Thompson wanted to harass his former girlfriend by claiming she was behind the threats. |
Obama to receive 2017 Profile in Courage Award Posted: 03 Mar 2017 11:09 AM PST Since leaving office, former President Barack Obama has stayed largely out of the public eye. In May, however, he will be invited back into the spotlight to receive an award for his political service. On Thursday, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced that Mr. Obama would be the 2017 recipient of its John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage award. |
Trump, Russia, and the seriousness of smoke Posted: 03 Mar 2017 10:34 AM PST Mr. Allen took that to mean that all the warning signs and unanswered questions surrounding the Trump team's relationship with Russian officials have themselves become a full-on political problem. In part, all this is because President Trump's own denials about the connection have been belied by events. Mr. Trump has long hit back hard at press reports of any Russian connection. |
Why Evangelicals are Trump's strongest travel-ban supporters Posted: 03 Mar 2017 10:15 AM PST When President Trump released the first version of his executive order placing a temporary ban on immigrants from seven Muslim "countries of concern" in January, Ernie Sanders gave the president his full support. "I'm not so against bringing in refugees," says Pastor Sanders, echoing the concerns of many evangelical leaders since President Trump issued his controversial executive order, which was halted by federal courts in February. |
Texas becomes latest state to debate 'affirmative consent' to prevent sexual assault Posted: 03 Mar 2017 07:26 AM PST Public attitudes today toward affirmative consent – the idea that sexual consent can only be obtained through explicit verbal or physical cues, rather than a lack of protest or resistance – bear little resemblance to the negative response the concept received in the early 1990s when first introduced at Antioch College. |
Russia-Trump ties: Is Sessions' recusal enough? Posted: 02 Mar 2017 06:51 PM PST Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision to partially recuse himself from investigations of Russian contacts with Trump campaign officials is a step in the right direction, some legal experts say. For one, an investigation needs a greater degree of independence – perhaps through a special prosecutor, used during Watergate and again in the Clinton "Whitewater" scandal, or a bipartisan commission, such as the 9/11 Commission that delved into the terror attacks of 2001. |
Major companies back transgender teen in Supreme Court case: a new trend? Posted: 02 Mar 2017 02:46 PM PST More than 50 companies declared their support for a transgender high school student in a brief to the Supreme Court Thursday, arguing that the 17-year-old's school should allow him to use the bathroom that corresponds to his gender identity. Gavin Grimm, a transgender teenage boy, brought the suit against his school board in Gloucester County, Va., for refusing to let him use the boy's bathroom at his school. |
