Exclusive: Czechs stopped potential nuclear tech purchase by Iran: sources Posted: 13 May 2015 02:12 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau and Robert Muller UNITED NATIONS/PRAGUE (Reuters) - The Czech Republic blocked an attempted purchase by Iran this year of a large shipment of sensitive technology useable for nuclear enrichment after false documentation raised suspicions, U.N. experts and Western sources said. The incident could add to Western concerns about whether Tehran can be trusted to adhere to a nuclear deal being negotiated with world powers under which it would curb sensitive nuclear work in exchange for sanctions relief. The negotiators are trying to reach a deal by the end of June after hammering out a preliminary agreement on April 2, with Iran committing to reduce the number of centrifuges it operates and agreeing to other long-term nuclear limitations. |

Brazil's lower house passes second austerity bill Posted: 13 May 2015 04:45 PM PDT The lower chamber of Brazil's Congress passed a bill on Wednesday toughening access to social security pensions, the second measure approved in a week to cut benefits in a drive to reduce a growing fiscal deficit. The measure, which still has to clear the Senate, could save public coffers up to 7.5 billion reais ($2.47 billion) a year, mainly by curbing abuse in pension claims. A week ago, the Chamber of Deputies narrowly passed a bill tightening unemployment benefits in a test vote for President Dilma Rousseff's efforts to balance Brazil's fiscal accounts, avoid a credit downgrade and restore business confidence. Passage in the Senate will be easier, Senator Romero Jucá of the center-right PMDB, Brazil's largest party and key partner in Rousseff's governing coalition, told Reuters. |

Pyongyang pop and flowers: last days of North Korea's defense chief Posted: 13 May 2015 03:46 PM PDT By James Pearson SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean defense minister Hyon Yong Chol settled into a concert hall seat on an evening in late April to watch Pyongyang's best-known pop act, the Moranbong Band, perform hits including "Glorious Motherland" and "My Country is the Best". If confirmed, it would be the latest in a string of purges under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. According to reports in North Korean state media, his last days were packed with pomp, ceremony, and the exchange of bows and floral baskets in honor of the system that ultimately appears to have killed him. Born in rural North Hamgyong province in 1949, Hyon was educated at Pyongyang's prestigious military colleges and spent his entire career in the army. |

Yemen warns Iran to blame for any incident sparked by cargo ship Posted: 13 May 2015 03:31 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Yemen warned on Wednesday that if Iran does not allow a cargo ship bound for the Arabian Peninsula with a military escort to be searched, then Tehran "bears complete responsibility for any incident that arises from their attempt to enter Yemeni waters." Iran said earlier on Wednesday it would not allow Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces to inspect the ship, which it says is carrying humanitarian aid. The ship left Iran on Monday under escort by Iranian warships. Yemen's warning came in a letter, seen by Reuters, from its U.N. mission to the United Nations Security Council. "The Yemeni government and the coalition forces do not object to aid shipments entering Yemen as long as they obtain the necessary permits from the legitimate government of Yemen and are searched prior to entry," the letter said. |
