Islamic State flying three jets in Syria: monitor Posted: 17 Oct 2014 11:02 AM PDT By Sylvia Westall BEIRUT (Reuters) - Iraqi pilots who have joined Islamic State in Syria are training members of the group to fly in three captured fighter jets, a group monitoring the war said on Friday, saying it was the first time the militant group had taken to the air. The group, which has seized swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, has been flying the planes over the captured al-Jarrah military airport east of Aleppo, said Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the report and U.S. ... |

Brazil election poll gives Neves wide advantage over Rousseff Posted: 17 Oct 2014 02:29 PM PDT BRASILIA (Reuters) - Opposition candidate Aecio Neves would defeat President Dilma Rousseff by almost 13 percentage points in the Oct. 26 runoff to Brazil's presidential election, according to a poll published on Friday. The poll was conducted by Sensus, a research institute that is not as closely watched as Brazil's larger polling firms Ibope and Datafolha, whose polls show Neves and Rousseff in a dead heat. If the runoff were held today, Neves would win 56.4 percent of the valid votes - which exclude undecided voters, spoiled and blank survey responses - against 43. ... |

Greek PM says he can ride out market turbulence and quit bailout Posted: 17 Oct 2014 03:07 PM PDT By Alessandra Galloni MILAN (Reuters) - Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said on Friday Greece would ride out market doubts about whether it can survive without international support, telling Reuters he can lead his country out of a four-year bailout and not call early elections. Samaras said Athens was talking with its lenders about what should happen if Greece succeeds in leaving its bailout program by the end of December, a year ahead of schedule, as Greek officials hope. He sees one option as a credit line that Athens could tap post-bailout should it fall prey to future market turmoil. ... |
