Construction began on Nov. 20, 1998, but perhaps the station's most remarkable achievements came in November 2000, when the first human crew arrived: a US Navy Seal and two Russian cosmonauts. As such, the space station is not only a technological achievement but also a remarkable example of international cooperation.

"I was feeding kids and their families a Thanksgiving meal, and it felt amazing," says Ms. Morgan, whose dinner, now an annual event, is called Blessed to be a Blessing. "But the only food I distinctly remember is the mashed potatoes – and I don't even like mashed potatoes," she says with a laugh as she bought last-minute door prizes Sunday night at a local Walmart.

Ms. Cunningham reminisces about picking butter beans as a teenager, partly for money but also to get away "from really strict parents." Now this is her place, where country clutter mixes with memorabilia, a broken lawnmower, and a black-and-white portrait of a young Cunningham at graduation. Seared into her memory are the 1960s protests she participated in as racial tensions flared and Georgia became the cradle of the Civil Rights movement.
