How to give with quality: five points to consider Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:06 PM PST This column is part of an occasional series about how you, too, can make a difference. It is written by the head of our partner organization UniversalGiving, which helps people give and volunteer in more than 100 countries. Giving, giving – it's getting to be that time of year again! Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:37 AM PST The International Space Station is marking its 20th anniversary circling Earth, completing 16 orbits of the planet each day. Construction began on Nov. 20, 1998, but perhaps the station's most remarkable achievements came in November 2000, when the first human crew arrived: a US Navy Seal and two Russian cosmonauts. This big-hearted Flint resident helps many feel blessed at Thanksgiving Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:10 AM PST Chia Morgan vividly recalls the fall 2009 dream – one she firmly believes was a message from God – that inspired her to organize her first Thanksgiving dinner for needy city residents with just two months' notice. "I was feeding kids and their families a Thanksgiving meal, and it felt amazing," says Ms. Morgan, whose dinner, now an annual event, is called Blessed to be a Blessing. "But the only food I distinctly remember is the mashed potatoes – and I don't even like mashed potatoes," she says with a laugh as she bought last-minute door prizes Sunday night at a local Walmart. |
Voting after Shelby: How a 2013 Supreme Court ruling shaped the 2018 election Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:19 AM PST Surrounded by a partial crew of her 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nola Cunningham's seat in the recliner at the hearth of her humble house on Yazoo Street only heightens the dignity of the septuagenarian's authority. Ms. Cunningham reminisces about picking butter beans as a teenager, partly for money but also to get away "from really strict parents." Now this is her place, where country clutter mixes with memorabilia, a broken lawnmower, and a black-and-white portrait of a young Cunningham at graduation. Seared into her memory are the 1960s protests she participated in as racial tensions flared and Georgia became the cradle of the Civil Rights movement. |
