Iran-backed Shi'ite militias to join assault near Mosul on new front Posted: 28 Oct 2016 09:02 AM PDT By Saif Hameed and Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Shi'ite militias backed by Iran said on Friday they would soon join the fight against Islamic State on a new front west of Mosul, a move which could block any retreat by the jihadists into Syria but might alarm Turkey and the United States. The Shi'ite militias, with thousands of battle-hardened fighters trained by Iran, would bring important extra firepower to what is expected to be the biggest battle in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. A spokesman for the paramilitary groups said the advance toward the Islamic State-held town of Tal Afar, about 55 km (35 miles) west of Mosul, would start within "a few days or hours". |
Syrian rebels launch Aleppo counter-attack to break siege Posted: 28 Oct 2016 09:41 AM PDT By Ellen Francis and Angus McDowall BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels including jihadists counter-attacked the army and its allies on Friday aiming to break a weeks-long siege on eastern Aleppo, insurgents said. The assault, employing heavy shelling and suicide car bombs, was mainly focused on the city's western edge by rebels based in the countryside outside Aleppo. It included Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, a former affiliate of al Qaeda previously known as the Nusra Front, and groups fighting under the Free Syrian Army (FSA) banner. |
Northern Irish court sides with UK premier over Brexit challenge Posted: 28 Oct 2016 11:13 AM PDT By Amanda Ferguson BELFAST (Reuters) - Northern Ireland's High Court on Friday rejected an attempt to block Britain's exit from the European Union, saying that neither the province's parliament nor its laws could override a decision by the British government. Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed the ruling, with a spokesman saying it would allow the British government "to proceed to trigger Article 50 as planned". One of the plaintiffs, human rights activist Raymond McCord, said he would appeal against the ruling in the Supreme Court, Britain's highest judicial body. |
France, Britain feud over young 'Jungle' migrants Posted: 28 Oct 2016 12:45 PM PDT By Matthias Blamont and Noemie Olive CALAIS, France (Reuters) - France demanded on Friday that Britain take in hundreds of minors from war-torn countries after the British interior minister suggested that Paris should do more for them following the closure of the "Jungle" migrant camp in the northern French port city of Calais. Most have now been bussed to other centres across France pending examination of their cases. British Home Secretary (Interior Minister) Amber Rudd told her French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve on Friday that his government must guarantee the protection of youngsters left in limbo after the evacuation of the "Jungle". |
Venezuelan opposition strike patchy amid government threats Posted: 28 Oct 2016 10:11 AM PDT By Brian Ellsworth and Anggy Polanco CARACAS/SAN CRISTOBAL (Reuters) - Venezuela's streets were quieter than usual on Friday during an opposition-called strike, but participation was patchy after the socialist government threatened to shut down businesses that closed. "The strike is a good pressure tactic ... but if I don't work, I don't eat," said insurance agent Adolfo Diaz, 38, trying to reach work despite fewer buses in the western city of San Cristobal where sentiment is strong against President Nicolas Maduro. Venezuela's opposition Democratic Unity coalition called for a 12-hour shutdown as part of escalating protests after authorities scuttled its push for a referendum to recall the OPEC nation's unpopular socialist leader. |

"We have analyzed the proposals of changes and precisions to the final accord that different sectors of the society have suggested," they said in a joint statement that they read out in a news conference in Havana. "The proposals are being discussed carefully and many are being incorporated into the texts of a new accord," the statement said, without describing the proposed changes. |

Opposition leaders have demanded that Maduro show a birth certificate, and have noted discrepancies between different statements by public officials regarding where he was born. |
