Philippine leader says honoring defense pacts with 'friends' U.S. Posted: 10 Nov 2016 02:03 PM PST By Martin Petty MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Friday he would respect defense treaties with "friends" and "ally" the United States, but still wanted foreign troops to leave his country by the end of his term. Duterte spared the United States one of his trademark verbal lashings and took a more conciliatory tone than usual, although he hinted at revoking the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) that gives U.S. troops rotational access to Philippine bases. "We are friends, with an ally, we have a military pact that would bind us," he told a pre-dawn news conference upon his return from a visit to Malaysia. |
Several dead, scores wounded as blast rocks German consulate in Afghan city Posted: 10 Nov 2016 04:30 PM PST By Abdul Matin and Sabine Siebold MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan/BERLIN (Reuters) - Militants rammed at least one car packed with explosives into a wall surrounding the German consulate in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif late on Thursday, killing several civilians and wounding scores of others, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for NATO air strikes against a village near the northern city of Kunduz last week in which more than 30 people were killed. A NATO spokesman said the explosion had caused "massive damage" to the building, where around 30 people normally worked and heavily armed gunmen had followed up the blast. |
Iraqi forces preparing advance on south Mosul Posted: 10 Nov 2016 07:26 AM PST By John Davison and Dominic Evans SOUTH OF MOSUL/BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqi security forces are preparing to advance toward Mosul airport on the city's southern edge to increase pressure on Islamic State militants fighting troops who breached their eastern defenses, officers said on Thursday. The rapid response forces, part of a coalition seeking to crush the jihadists in the largest city under their control in Iraq or Syria, took the town of Hammam al-Alil, just over 15 km (10 miles) south of Mosul, on Monday. More than three weeks after the U.S.-backed campaign to retake Mosul was launched, the city is almost surrounded by the coalition of nearly 100,000 fighters. |
Trump's foreign policy approach almost same as that of Putin: Kremlin Posted: 10 Nov 2016 12:09 PM PST By Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Thursday U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's foreign policy approach was "phenomenally close" to that of President Vladimir Putin, giving Russia hope that tattered U.S.-Russia relations could gradually be improved. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking in New York, said he saw incredible similarities between the two men's foreign policy ideas, and this meant there was a solid basis to start a meaningful dialogue between Moscow and Washington. Peskov, in the United States for a chess tournament, said he was struck by how similar parts of Trump's victory speech were to a speech Putin gave in southern Russia last month. |
Russian hackers accused of post-election attacks on U.S. think tanks Posted: 10 Nov 2016 02:58 PM PST A Russian hacking group began attacking U.S.-based policy think tanks within hours of Donald Trump's presidential election victory, according to cyber experts who suspect Moscow is seeking information on the incoming administration. Three cyber security firms told Reuters that are tracking a spear-phishing campaign by a Russian-government linked group known as Cozy Bear, which is widely suspected of hacking the Democratic Party ahead of the election. "Probably now they are trying to rush to gain access to certain targets where they can get a better understanding on what is going on in Washington after the election and during the transition period," said Jaime Blasco, chief scientist with cyber security firm AlienVault. |
Britain's Johnson says no need for gloom about Trump victory Posted: 10 Nov 2016 04:34 PM PST British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, setting aside his previous hostility toward Donald Trump, said on Thursday the U.S. Republican's presidential election victory offered economic opportunities and there was no need for Europeans to be despondent about it. "I may respectfully say to my European friends and colleagues that it's time we snapped out of general doom and gloom about this election," Johnson said after meeting Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic. Trump's upset victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton has delighted far-right politicians in France, the Netherlands and Austria but worried some mainstream politicians who fear it may be part of a populist, anti-establishment trend. |
All Blacks' Irish revenge on hold for Italy test Posted: 10 Nov 2016 05:40 PM PST Thoughts of avenging a first defeat to Ireland in over a century will take a back seat, for 80 minutes at least, when the All Blacks face new-look Italy on Saturday. New Zealand's impressive streak of 18 consecutive Test victories was ended last week when they lost to Ireland for the first time in 111 years. On Saturday, when former Harlequins coach Conor O'Shea leads out a largely youthful and untested Italy at the Stadio Olimpico, an All Black rout may well ensue. |

Judge orders bottled water delivered in Flint, Michigan, in water crisis Posted: 10 Nov 2016 05:06 PM PST A federal judge on Thursday ordered state and city officials to deliver bottled water directly to qualified residents in Flint, Michigan, where a water contamination crisis has made unfiltered tap water unsafe to drink since April 2014. Officials must deliver four cases of bottled water a week immediately unless they can prove a water filter is installed and properly maintained at a home or if residents opt out of a filter or deliveries, U.S. District Judge David Lawson said. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by residents and advocacy groups Concerned Pastors for Social Action, the National Resources Defense Council and the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan. |

Posted: 10 Nov 2016 04:58 PM PST NEW DELHI (AP) — Throughout his campaign, Asian nations were a regular target of President-elect Donald Trump's speeches: China is a trade manipulator; Japan and Korea don't contribute enough for U.S. forces; the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the trade deal forged with 11 Pacific Rim nations, in part to isolate China, should never be ratified. His anger could be palpable. "We can't continue to allow China to rape our country." Trump said in a campaign rally, talking about Washington's trade deficit with Beijing. But he could also shift quickly, noting: "I'm not angry with China ... China's great!" So across Asia, politicians and analysts are wondering what role the Trump White House will play across the continent. |

The Taliban called it a "revenge attack" for US air strikes in the volatile province of Kunduz earlier this month that left up to 32 civilians dead. IMF urges Argentina to continue reforms, protect poor Posted: 10 Nov 2016 04:17 PM PST The IMF on Thursday urged Argentina to stay the course on tough economic reforms, but also to take steps to protect the poor from the negative consequences. In the first report on the nation's economy in a decade, marking full restoration of relations between Buenos Aires and the International Monetary Fund, the fund said it will take time for the reforms to bear fruit and there will be "negative short-term impact" of the policy changes. The IMF last month forecast the Argentine economy will contract by 1.7 percent this year followed by a 2017 rebound as the reforms take hold, with growth of 2.7 percent expected. |
