Brexit vote, UK political confusion rattles world markets for second day Posted: 27 Jun 2016 04:05 PM PDT By Kylie MacLellan and Anirban Nag LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's vote last Thursday to leave the European Union continued to reverberate through financial markets on Monday, with the pound falling to its lowest level in 31 years, despite government attempts to relieve some of the confusion about the political and economic outlook. UK finance minister George Osborne said early Monday that the British economy was strong enough to cope with the market volatility caused by last week's "Brexit" referendum which has resulted in the biggest blow since World War Two to the European goal of forging greater unity. "Our economy is about as strong as it could be to confront the challenge our country now faces," Osborne told reporters. |
Kerry raises harassment of U.S. diplomats in Moscow with Putin Posted: 27 Jun 2016 01:44 PM PDT Russian harassment and surveillance of U.S. diplomats in Moscow has increased significantly and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry raised the issue recently with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the State Department said on Monday. Kerry last raised the matter with Putin on March 24 this year, a State Department official said. "He has raised it with President Putin," State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau told a news briefing earlier, adding: "We see an increase and we take it seriously." Trudeau said harassment by Russian security agents and traffic police had been an issue over the past two years, but did not give details of incidents nor why it was raised with Putin. |
Adios, Three Amigos: Obama heads to last summit with Canada, Mexico Posted: 27 Jun 2016 04:37 PM PDT By Roberta Rampton and David Ljunggren WASHINGTON/OTTAWA (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will meet with the leaders of Canada and Mexico on Wednesday for his final "Three Amigos" summit, a meeting that may signal how keen the North American partners are to tout trade at a time of rising protectionist sentiment. The Ottawa summit comes on the heels of Britain voting to leave the European Union after more than 40 years. It also falls ahead of a U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8 where presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has made stagnant wages and U.S. manufacturing job losses focal points of his insurgent campaign. |
Iraqi army closes in on Islamic State militants near Falluja Posted: 27 Jun 2016 03:33 PM PDT By Thaier al-Sudani and Ahmed Rasheed FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq's army sought on Monday to eliminate Islamic State fighters holed up in farmland west of Falluja to keep them from launching a counterattack on the city, a day after the government declared victory over the militants there. The government's recapture of Falluja, an hour's drive west of the capital, Baghdad, was part of a broader offensive against Islamic State militants, which seized large swaths of Iraq's north and west in 2014, but is now being driven back by an array of forces. Falluja's recovery lent fresh momentum to the campaign to recapture Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city and the biggest anywhere within the jihadists' self-proclaimed caliphate. |
Eight suicide bombers target Lebanese Christian village Posted: 27 Jun 2016 02:05 PM PDT Eight suicide bombers attacked a Lebanese Christian village on Monday, killing five people and wounding dozens more, in the latest violent spillover of the five-year-old Syrian war into Lebanon. Security sources said they believed Islamic State was responsible for the bombings in the village of Qaa on Lebanon's border with Syria, but there was no immediate claim of responsibility. A first wave of attacks involved four suicide bombers who struck after 4 a.m., killing five people, all civilians. |

The investigators added in a statement that the doomed plane's cockpit voice recorder would begin to be worked on "within hours" also. |

Pakistan cricket coach Arthur undaunted by Australia axe Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:39 PM PDT Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur has arrived back in England saying that while he may have learnt from his time in charge of Australia it will not alter his fundamental approach to the job. Arthur's last tour of England saw him sacked as Australia coach just weeks before the start of the 2013 Ashes following the team's unsuccessful Champions Trophy campaign. Now his major challenge is to get the best out of a talented Pakistan that includes Mohammad Amir, with the left-arm paceman set to return at Lord's next month for his first Test since the 2010 spot-fixing scandal on the ground which led to five-year bans and jail terms for him, new-ball colleague Mohammad Asif and then captain Salman Butt. |

Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:32 PM PDT BEIJING (AP) — China is a potential winner if Britain and the European Union rework trade deals and look for investors after a British exit. Beijing faces a blow from weaker European demand for its exports and pressure to hold its yuan steady in turbulent currency markets. But economists and political analysts say if Britain and the EU split, both sides will look to cash-rich Chinese companies that are expanding abroad — with the possible bonus for Beijing of closer political ties. "One of the benefits China can gain from 'Brexit' is a stronger and closer economic relationship with the U.K. |

UNICEF finds dramatic inequality among world's poorest, richest children Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:15 PM PDT By Sebastien Malo NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The number of children who do not attend school is rising, child marriage has not dropped in decades and millions of young children will die mostly preventable deaths by 2030 if global poverty is not addressed, UNICEF said in a bleak report issued on Tuesday. Poor children are twice as likely as rich children to die before age 5, and poor girls are more than twice as likely to become child brides in signs of troubling inequality, said the annual report by the United Nations' children's agency. Noting some progress in halving global mortality rates for children under 5 since 1990 and boys and girls attending primary school in equal numbers in 129 countries, the report said such developments have been neither even nor fair, with repercussions for global turmoil. |
UK's Osborne rules himself out of race to succeed PM Cameron Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:10 PM PDT By Andy Bruce LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister George Osborne ruled himself out of the running to succeed Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday, citing his fierce advocacy of staying in the European Union. The government is under pressure to fill a vacuum left when Cameron announced he would resign by October after Britain ignored his advice and voted to leave the 28-member bloc in last week's referendum. "So it is clear that while I completely accept the result, I am not the person to provide the unity my party needs at this time." Before the referendum campaign, Osborne had been widely regarded as a candidate to succeed Cameron one day, boosted by one of the strongest expansions among major developed economies in the last few years. |

Willis is ranked 706 in the world and just months ago the 25-year-old, who works as a coach to amateur players, was considering calling time on a professional career that appeared to be going nowhere. As if that wasn't enough to get Willis pinching himself, just hours later Federer defeated Guido Pella to give the unknown Briton an unthinkable meeting with the legendary Federer. |
Exclusive: U.S. to downgrade Myanmar in annual human trafficking report - sources Posted: 27 Jun 2016 04:49 PM PDT By Matt Spetalnick, Jason Szep and Antoni Slodkowski WASHINGTON/YANGON (Reuters) - The United States has decided to place Myanmar on its global list of worst offenders in human trafficking, officials said, a move aimed at prodding the country's new democratically elected government and its still-powerful military to do more to curb the use of child soldiers and forced labor. The reprimand of Myanmar comes despite U.S. efforts to court the strategically important country to help counteract China's rise in the region and build a Southeast Asian bulwark against Beijing's territorial assertiveness in the South China Sea. Myanmar's demotion, part of the State Department's closely watched annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report due to be released on Thursday, also appears intended to send a message of U.S. concern about continued widespread persecution of the Rohingya Muslim minority in the Buddhist-majority nation. |

South China Sea reefs 'decimated' as giant clams harvested in bulk Posted: 27 Jun 2016 04:15 PM PDT By Farah Master TANMEN, China (Reuters) - Ornaments made from the shells of endangered giant clams, renowned in China for having auspicious powers and the luster of ivory, have become coveted luxuries, a trend which has wreaked havoc on the ecosystem of the South China Sea. China banned harvesting of giant clams last year but in the tiny seaside town Tanmen on the southern island of Hainan, most stores still sell products made from the over four-foot-wide shells. The price of giant clams has risen 40-fold over the past five years, while the plundering of the seabed has led to severe degradation of the reefs, scientists and academics said. |

It's a difficult situation." Japan last month passed a bill overhauling its 70-year-old Child Welfare Law, recognizing a child's right to grow up in a family setting. It is short on specific, immediate measures, but experts say it's a first step to making institutions a last resort, rather than the default position. |

Preparing for Brexit, Britain may see new PM by early September Posted: 27 Jun 2016 04:05 PM PDT By Elizabeth Piper and Kylie MacLellan LONDON (Reuters) - Britain could have a new prime minister by early September, the ruling Conservative Party said on Monday, after David Cameron started laying the groundwork for his successor to trigger the country's exit from the European Union. The government is under pressure to fill a vacuum left when Cameron announced he would resign by October after Britain ignored his advice and voted to leave the 28-member bloc in last week's referendum. Triggering a leadership battle that could draw in some of his closest advisers, Cameron urged ministers to work together in the meantime. |
Egypt deports popular Lebanese political talk show host Posted: 27 Jun 2016 04:03 PM PDT Egypt on Monday arrested and deported popular talk show host Liliane Daoud, security and airport sources said, hours after the Lebanese journalist announced the cancellation of her TV program. Daoud's deportation comes amid a growing crackdown on media that has seen scores of journalists tried in court and jailed. The show, Al-Soura Al-Kamila (the full picture), had drawn both praise and criticism for its coverage of controversial political topics only rarely explored on Egypt's predominantly pro-government airwaves. |

The deal with Israel after years of negotiation was a rare rapprochement in the divided Middle East, driven by the prospect of lucrative Mediterranean gas deals as well as mutual fears over growing security risks. "With this agreement, economic relations will start to improve," Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said of the deal with Israel, echoing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said it would have "immense implications" for Israel's economy. |
