Why journalism is shifting away from 'objectivity' Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:14 PM PDT When President Trump retweeted a meme earlier this week, sending out a cartoonishly doctored video that showed him clotheslining a person representing CNN, it escalated the conflict between Mr. Trump and the press – a conflict that may be fundamentally changing journalism. For the president, his tweet was a "modern-day presidential" counter-punch to his critics, drawing on the scripted spectacles of professional wrestling. |
Posted: 06 Jul 2017 01:27 PM PDT America's youth is turning its back on tobacco. According to a study recently published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking among US high school students is at an all-time low. One in 5 US high school students in 2016 reported using a tobacco product within the past 30 days, an improvement from 1 in 4 students just one year before. |
Millions of pigs will soon live better lives in China Posted: 06 Jul 2017 12:53 PM PDT As the world's largest pork producer, China is home to more than half of the world's pig population. "We are committed to the promotion of animal welfare, and to the production of high quality and safe pork for our customers," said Song Weiping, vice president of Da Bei Nong, in a press release. The southern city of Yulin usually celebrates the summer solstice by feasting on fragrant lychees and fried dog, but sales have dramatically reduced in recent years. |
Trump hasn't changed Syria policy. To defeat ISIS, some think he should Posted: 06 Jul 2017 12:04 PM PDT When President Trump launched 59 tomahawk cruise missiles in April over evidence Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had again used chemical weapons on civilians, proponents of a deeper US involvement in Syria rejoiced. Here was the sign they'd been waiting for, that Mr. Trump would go beyond former President Barack Obama's narrowly focused effort to degrade and eventually defeat the so-called Islamic State. The tomahawks announced – at least these advocates thought – a more expansive strategy combining the battle to destroy ISIS in Syria and neighboring Iraq with fights Mr. Obama never wanted to get into. |
