Ukraine blames Moscow for 'human shield' detentions in east Posted: 26 Apr 2014 10:05 AM PDT By Thomas Grove SLAVIANSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine offered on Saturday to release eight captive international observers in a prisoner exchange, as Western governments prepared new sanctions against Moscow. The pro-Western government in Kiev blamed Russia for what it called the kidnapping on Friday of the monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Ukraine said they were being used as human shields. Since Ukrainians toppled their pro-Russian president in February, Russia has annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and massed tens of thousands of troops on the country's eastern border. |
Obama reminds North Korea of U.S. 'military might' Posted: 26 Apr 2014 05:03 AM PDT By Matt Spetalnick and Mark Felsenthal SEOUL (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Saturday the United States did not use its military might to "impose things" on others, but that it would use that might if necessary to defend South Korea from any attack by the reclusive North. The North warned last month it would not rule out a "new form" of atomic test after the U.N. Security Council condemned Pyongyang's launch of a mid-range ballistic missile into the sea east of the Korean peninsula. Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye presented a united front against North Korea at a joint news conference following their summit on Friday, warning that they would respond firmly to any "provocations" by Pyongyang which routinely threatens the United States and South Korea with destruction. |
Palestinian unity government will recognize Israel: Abbas Posted: 26 Apr 2014 11:28 AM PDT By Noah Browning RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signaled on Saturday that he remains committed to troubled U.S.-backed peace talks, saying that any unity government agreed with the militant group Hamas would recognize Israel. Abbas's comments appeared aimed at soothing U.S. concerns about the unity deal he reached on Wednesday with Hamas, an Islamist faction sworn to Israel's destruction and designated by the West as a terrorist organization. Israel suspended peace negotiations with Abbas after the reconciliation pact, and the United States said it would reconsider annual aid to the Palestinians worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I recognize Israel and it would recognize Israel. |
Afghans brace for another round of voting; bargaining begins Posted: 26 Apr 2014 11:40 AM PDT By Jeremy Laurence and Mirwais Harooni KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan's presidential election is set to go to a second round between former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani after no candidate won an absolute majority, preliminary results showed on Saturday. Abdullah finished top with 44.9 percent, followed by Ghani with 31.5 percent, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said. Zalmay Rassoul, also a former foreign minister, was a distant third with 11.5 percent. "This is a preliminary outcome and will now go to the Independent Election Complaints Commission and they will work on this. |
Scottish leader says energy and fisheries make Scotland key to Europe Posted: 26 Apr 2014 04:19 PM PDT By Belinda Goldsmith LONDON (Reuters) - Scotland's energy reserves and fishing grounds will make it a crucial member of the European Union (EU) if it votes to leave the United Kingdom in an independence referendum, Scottish leader Alex Salmond will say on Monday. Salmond wants Scotland to stay in the EU if there is a "Yes" vote on September 18, hoping to agree a "smooth transition" to a renewal of membership before the country declares independence in March 2016. In February European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said an independent Scotland would have to reapply to the EU as a new state. Opponents of ending Scotland's 307-year-old tie to England argue that EU entry would be far from guaranteed as all 28 member states would have to approve - and some, fighting their own secessionist movements, might be reluctant to recognize a new state. |
Russian forces kill up to five suspected militants in Dagestan: Ifax Posted: 26 Apr 2014 12:16 PM PDT Russian security forces killed up to five suspected militants in armed confrontations in the North Caucasus province of Dagestan on Saturday, the Interfax news agency reported. Dagestan, a mostly Muslim region in Russia's North Caucasus, along the country's southern edge, is plagued by an Islamist insurgency rooted in two post-Soviet separatist wars in the neighboring Chechnya province. |

UK Treasury says time to start busting 'myths' on Scottish independence Posted: 26 Apr 2014 04:14 PM PDT The British government will step up its campaign against Scottish independence this week when a senior Treasury official travels to Edinburgh to try to dispel "myths" surrounding claims made by supporters of secession. Danny Alexander will say the Scottish government's assumptions about oil revenues are over-optimistic and accuse it of failing to acknowledge the impact of Scotland's ageing population on the country's finances, the Treasury said in a statement on Sunday. Ahead of a September 18 independence referendum, the British government's campaign to keep the 307-year-old union with Scotland intact is battling to hold on to a shrinking poll lead over nationalists, who say a split would give Scotland the freedom to create a fairer and more prosperous nation. |
More tornadoes expected in central U.S. after North Carolina storm Posted: 26 Apr 2014 04:10 PM PDT The first serious, prolonged storms of the year were brewing on Saturday in the Great Plains, with a growing risk of tornadoes touching down in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas in the coming days, federal meteorologists said. A separate storm system sent at least one tornado tearing through coastal North Carolina overnight on Friday. Some 150 homes were damaged or destroyed by winds in excess of 100 miles an hour (160 km an hour), he said, and three people were taken to a trauma center at a hospital in Greenville, North Carolina. That storm has since moved out to sea, but a new severe storm system is gaining strength in the Great Plains where large hail and damaging winds were expected on Saturday, meteorologists said. |

Anti-government protests return to Venezuela's streets Posted: 26 Apr 2014 03:29 PM PDT Several thousand people took to the streets of Caracas and other Venezuelan cities Saturday to protest education reform plans and restrictions on the right to demonstrate. The Education Ministry recently started consultations to reform the country's basic school curriculum in a move opponents say is aimed at "indoctrinating" students with socialist rhetoric promoted by late longtime leader Hugo Chavez and his political heir and successor, current President Nicolas Maduro. Others slammed recent restrictions on protests with banners such as "protesting is my right." Anti-government unrest has rattled Venezuela since February, leaving at least 41 people dead and more than 700 injured as angry students and others denounce rampant crime, inflation, widespread shortages of basic goods and other economic woes. |
Macedonians set to hand conservative PM Gruevski new term Posted: 26 Apr 2014 03:28 PM PDT By Kole Casule SKOPJE (Reuters) - Macedonia's conservative Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is likely to win a third term in a snap election on Sunday, as relative economic stability has kept at bay opposition complaints that his rule is authoritarian. The parliamentary vote in the small Balkan country coincides with a presidential runoff in which the incumbent Gjorge Ivanov, a candidate of Gruevski's VMRO-DPNE, looks set to beat a Social Democrat rival and win the largely ceremonial post. "I expect the same coalition to remain in office but with a slightly different balance of power in favor of VMRO-DPMNE," said Zhidas Daskalovski of the Centre for Research and Development, a Skopje-based think-tank. The last survey published before the vote gave VMRO-DPMNE a lead of 28.4 percent over the main opposition center-left SDSM on 14.1 percent. |

Activists rally in Cairo against law curbing demonstrations Posted: 26 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT Hundreds of Egyptian activists demonstrated on Saturday against an anti-protest law, one month before a presidential election which former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is widely expected to win. They marched to the presidential palace in Cairo calling for the scrapping of the law passed by Egypt's army-backed interim leadership in November to curb unrest that erupted after the army's overthrow of elected Islamist president Mohamed Mursi. Western powers and rights groups have voiced concern about the future of freedoms and democracy in Egypt three years after the ousting of Hosni Mubarak, an autocrat who ruled unchallenged for 30 years, in a popular uprising. Some liberal activists have also been arrested. |
