Election splits Congress, GOP bolstered as Democrats falter Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:40 PM PST The election scrambled seats in the House and Senate but ultimately left Congress much like it began, deeply split as voters resisted big changes despite the heated race at the top of the ticket for the White House. It's an outcome that dampens Democratic demands for a bold new agenda, emboldens Republicans and almost ensures partisan gridlock regardless of who wins the presidency. Speaker Nancy Pelosi was on track to keep control of the Democratic House, but saw her majority shrinking and her leadership called into question. |
Claim that Sharpie pens ruin Arizona ballots misses the mark Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:26 PM PST As states across the U.S. release vote totals for the presidential election, some social media users are falsely claiming that ballots are being invalidated in Arizona. In what's come to be known as #Sharpiegate, social media posts suggest that election officials in Maricopa County provided voters with Sharpie pens, which interfered with ballots being recorded, specifically those for President Donald Trump. |
Post-election vote tallying raises fresh security concerns Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:18 PM PST Election Day came and went without any overt signs of foreign interference affecting the vote, but that doesn't mean the risk has faded. A prolonged vote-tallying period in swing states raises the prospect of multiple security concerns, including foreign or domestic disinformation campaigns that could sow doubt in the process as well as actual digital manipulation of vote tabulation. Intentionally false information and propaganda have been constant during the 2020 contest between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, including threatening but fake emails that were sent to Democratic voters last month that U.S. officials have linked to Iran. |

In blue and red states, milestone wins for LGBTQ candidates Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:48 PM PST Across the nation, LGBTQ candidates achieved milestone victories in Tuesday's election, including the first transgender person elected to a state Senate, and the first openly gay Black men to win seats in Congress. The landmark wins came not in only blue but also red states such as Tennessee, where Republican Eddie Mannis, who is gay, and Democrat Torrey Harris, who identifies as bisexual, won seats in the state House to become the first openly LGBTQ members of that legislature. |
EXPLAINER: A day later, what is the US waiting for? Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:30 PM PST Neither President Donald Trump nor his Democratic rival Joe Biden cleared the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, and the margins are tight in five battleground states. The AP called Wisconsin and Michigan, which also had been in play earlier Wednesday, for Biden. Trump's campaign has requested a recount. |
Four Italian regions, including Milan, put under lockdown Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:21 PM PST Four Italian regions are being put under "red-zone" lockdown, with severe limits imposed on the circumstances under which people can leave home, Premier Giuseppe Conte announced on Wednesday night. What he called "very stringent" restrictions begin on Friday for Lombardy, Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta in the north, and for Calabria, which forms the southern toe of the Italian peninsula. The lockdown is aimed at tamping down a surge in COVID-19 infections and preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed with cases. |
Election officials scramble to count ballots in key states Posted: 04 Nov 2020 12:22 PM PST Election officials in several key states furiously counted ballots Wednesday as the nation awaited the outcome of the race between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden and braced for possible recounts and legal challenges. Unlike in previous years, states were contending with an avalanche of mail ballots driven by the global pandemic. Every election, what's reported on election night are unofficial results, and the counting of votes extends past Election Day. |

With presidency in reach, Dems grapple with disappointment Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:57 AM PST Democrats went into Election Day hoping to reclaim the White House and majorities in both chambers of Congress in a victory that would demonstrate an unmistakable repudiation of President Donald Trump and a Republican Party remade in his image. More than 12 hours after polls closed, Biden held a narrow lead in some key states with hundreds of thousands of votes yet to be counted, and he has a comfortable advantage in the national popular vote. Republicans held key Senate seats that Democrats hoped to flip, and the GOP may ultimately shrink the Democrats' House majority. |
Regardless of the US presidential election outcome, Trumpism lives on Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:38 AM PST Trump proved resilient and increased his vote in Florida, Texas and other states – in 2020, his sexism, racism and lie-telling have been legitimised and emboldened * US election 2020 – live updates When all the votes are counted, the presidential election may deliver defeat for Donald Trump. But it did not deliver defeat for Trumpism. Democrats had hoped that four years of turmoil, attacks on norms and institutions and mendacity – plus a pandemic that cost 230,000 lives – would result in a quick, clean and overwhelming repudiation of the 45th president. That would have been clarifying about the direction of the country, a warning to the Republican party that it must take its 2013 "autopsy" report off the shelf and reinvent itself. But on another miserable night for pollsters, it did not turn out that way. Trump proved resilient and increased his vote in Florida, Texas and other states. He found even more white working-class voters than last time and chipped away at Democratic support among Latinos. His cult-of-personality campaign rallies were as enthusiastic and rambunctious as ever. His victory in 2016, it turns out, was no fluke attributable to Vladimir Putin or James Comey. In 2020 his sexism, racism and lie-telling have been legitimised and emboldened. When some Americans protested "This is not who we are", Trump voters replied: "This is exactly who we are – and we're not going anywhere." "The so-called moral outrage around Trump's presidency did not produce any substantive shift in his Republican support," tweeted Eddie Glaude, a professor at Princeton University and author of Democracy in Black. "In fact, he expanded his base among white voters. Trump continues to flourish in the intersection of greed, selfishness and racism." Now, if Trump wins the election, Trumpism wins. But if Trump loses the election, Trumpism wins too.A sense of grievance over a narrow defeat, fuelled by the president's bogus claims of fraud and amplified by conservative media, will thrive again a Democratic president. The "Make America Great Again" movement – with its nostalgia for a country that never was – was built for opposition rather than incumbency. There's more, Republicans appear to be on course to hold their Senate majority and may end up gaining seats in the House of Representatives. Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, and Lindsey Graham were rewarded, not punished, for normalising Trump and enforcing his will. The message to other Republican aspirants is clear. This is Trump's party now.Furthermore, McConnell would prove an implacable foe to a President Biden. The majority leader memorably declared that his top priority was to make sure Barack Obama was a one-term president. He failed in that but proved a master of obstruction. Now he is likely to repeat the formula with the man who served as Obama's vice-president for eight years. It is precisely the opposite of what America needs right now: a White House, Senate and House working together and thinking big like Franklin Roosevelt to tackle the pandemic, rebuild the economy and reform healthcare. Instead, expect more gridlock as a Democratic White House is parried at every turn by a Trump-fuelled Republican Senate majority. It is frustration with that type of dysfunction that fed the forces of Trumpism in the first place. The president continues to present himself as an outsider intent on shaking up the system and draining the swamp. Expect also a fusillade of attacks on Biden and scaremongering about what it would mean if he is succeeded by his running mate, Kamala Harris, a woman of colour. That will fire up the base even more. There was a school of thought that a crushing defeat for the Republican party, perhaps even in Texas, would be the best thing that could happen to it, the mother of all wake-up calls. But there was also a theory that – whatever the outcome – Trumpism was deep in the Republican party's bones, and it would take two or three elections to purge it. Now, indeed, the party is clearly committed to his strain of raw populist nationalism, overthrowing the old consensus on trade, immigration and other issues. Likely candidates for 2024? Don't rule out Donald Trump Jr. Or, for that matter, Donald Trump himself. |

AP VoteCast: Trump, Biden coalitions show race, class divide Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:08 AM PST Despite a once-in-a-century pandemic and a weakened economy, some 76% of U.S. voters said they knew all along who they would support — and they constituted the bulk of the supporters for both President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, according to AP VoteCast, an expansive survey of the voters nationwide. The candidates' supporters fell into familiar coalitions, with only a few groups showing significant numbers of swing voters. About two-thirds of all voters said their decision was about Trump — either for or against. |
US sets record for cases amid election battle over virus Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:07 AM PST New confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. have climbed to an all-time high of more than 86,000 per day on average, in a glimpse of the worsening crisis that lies ahead for the winner of the presidential election. Cases and hospitalizations are setting records all around the country just as the holidays and winter approach, demonstrating the challenge that either President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden will face in the coming months. Daily new confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. have surged 45% over the past two weeks, to a record 7-day average of 86,352, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. |
EU diplomats warn no-deal Brexit 'was still a serious risk' Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:06 AM PST There are still "wide divergences" on "core issues" of the Brexit trade negotiations, David Frost said on Wednesday night after two weeks of intensive talks with the EU. "We continue to work to find solutions that fully respect UK sovereignty," the UK's chief negotiator said. A no trade deal Brexit was still a serious risk, EU diplomats warned, before accusing British negotiators of failing to "engage sufficiently" on the three most divisive issues. Running down the clock would not force concessions from Brussels, they said, after it became clear there was no breakthrough on fishing, the level playing field guarantees and the deal's enforcement. Michel Barnier told EU ambassadors in Brussels that some progress had been made, but the two sides were still divided over the long-standing sticking points. "Despite EU efforts to find solutions, very serious divergences remain," the EU's chief negotiator tweeted after briefing the 27 senior diplomats and, separately, the European Parliament. "The EU is prepared for all scenarios," Mr Barnier added, in a reference to no deal, which would mean both sides trading on less lucrative WTO terms with tariffs and quotas. "Progress made but I agree with Michel Barnier that wide divergences remain on some core issues," Lord Frost tweeted. "Brexit talks seem to have made some progress lately. Unfortunately the UK does not seem to be engaging sufficiently on key issues," one EU diplomat said, "Given this situation a no deal outcome still can't be excluded." Below is a statement by Michel Barnier on 21 October |

Jittery public awaits news as presidency remains in flux Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:17 AM PST With the fate of the White House undecided Wednesday, a jittery and bitterly divided America braced for rocky days to come and the possibility a man they despise would be leading the nation. The fate of lower races remained unknown too, including the balance of the Senate, where forecasts of Democrats achieving a majority now seemed all but out of reach. |

Democrats' Senate drive halted by GOP; key races undecided Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:41 AM PST Democrats faced increasingly long odds in the the battle for Senate control as Republicans brushed back multiple challengers to protect their majority. In Maine, Republican Sen. Susan Collins won the hardest-fought race of her career, securing a fifth term by defeating Democrat Sara Gideon. Declaring victory Wednesday afternoon, Collins said the outcome was "affirmation of the work that I'm doing in Washington." |

2020 Latest: Trump campaign sues in 3rd state, Georgia Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:15 AM PST President Donald Trump's campaign and the Georgia Republican Party have filed a lawsuit against the Chatham County Board of Elections asking a judge to order the county to secure and account for ballots received after 7 p.m. on Election Day. The lawsuit alleges that a Republican observer watched a poll worker take unprocessed absentee ballots from a back room and mix them into processed absentee ballots waiting to be tabulated. A woman who answered the phone at the Chatham County Board of Elections offices declined to comment. |
Russian State Media Roots for Violence as America Counts Its Votes Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:10 AM PST With tens of thousands of votes yet to be counted in the contentious U.S. presidential race, President Donald Trump falsely asserted election fraud and prematurely declared himself to be the winner Tuesday night—even though the final tally may take days to resolve, and even as Democratic candidate Joe Biden appeared to be surging on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the American election turmoil brought much joy to Moscow, with Russia seeing clear gains in its ongoing fight against democracy.State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Nikonov, the grandson of the notorious Vyacheslav Molotov, predicted to the state media outlet Vesti that, regardless of the final outcome, half of American society will see the result as illegitimate. Nikonov falsely claimed that both presidential candidates claimed to have won, although the campaign of former Vice President Joe Biden made no such assertion as the votes are still being counted.Election 2020: Live Results"This outcome of the elections is the worst scenario for America," Nikonov concluded. He mockingly urged the Russians to buy lots of popcorn, due to the "uncompromising divide in the well-armed American society." Russian state television started to announce upcoming TV movies by describing them as "the greatest show on earth, not counting U.S. elections." Appearing on the Russian state media TV show 60 Minutes, Alexei Naumov from the Russian International Affairs Council said about the American presidential elections: "The greatest political thriller of the year is upon us. Watch and enjoy. Nothing like this will ever happen again."Russian state media has long predicted civil war and mayhem in post-election America. In the run-up to the presidential elections in the United States, the host of 60 Minutes Evgeny Popov repeatedly asked pundits and experts, "Will there be blood?" Igor Morozov, a member of Russia's Federation Council, replied, "Yes, there will be blood. There is no way there wouldn't be." Talking about the anticipated post-election violence between armed supporters of both candidates, Russian lawmaker Aleksei Zhuravlyov told 60 Minutes, "What's not to like? It's excellent, if you ask me… I love it!"> Meanwhile, Kremlin-controlled Russian state media looks upon the prospect of rising election violence in the United States with eager anticipation: > > "There will be blood." > > "We're desperately trying not to gloat, but it's hard not to." pic.twitter.com/OPvY5HtQNp> > — Julia Davis (@JuliaDavisNews) November 1, 2020Sergey Mironov, the head of Fair Russia political party and former chairman of Russia's Federation Council, argued that chaotic elections and the threat of violence in the United States demonstrate that America has lost its moral authority and can no longer claim to be the leader of the free world. Appearing on 60 Minutes, Igor Korotchenko, member of the Defense Ministry's public advisory council, argued that Russia should seize the opportunity to sell more arms to the countries trying to buck America's global leadership, while the United States is embroiled in an internal political battle. While the undecided election and the possibility of post-election violence in the U.S. bring joy to the Kremlin, Russia certainly has a dog in this fight. Pro-Kremlin pundits, experts, and lawmakers are openly rooting for Trump's re-election. Appearing on Russia's state TV show The Evening with Vladimir Soloviev, deputy dean of world politics at Moscow's State University, Andrey Sidorov explained, "We're certainly not indifferent as to who wins, because if Trump is re-elected, the same politics of chaos in America will continue. The United States undoubtedly will not be able to consolidate their allies… For us, Biden is the worst scenario."Russian Media's Final Election Push For Trump: Primetime Hunter Biden 'Sex Videos'Appearing on Russia's 60 Minutes one day prior to the U.S. elections, lawmaker Leonid Kalashnikov mockingly described the electoral choice hanging in the balance between Trump as "the Russian spy" and Biden as "the Ukrainian spy." Host Evgeny Popov played along: "We're for the Russian spy." Kalashnikov concurred: "When something is good for you, don't search for something better. Let our guy, Trump, stay. We know and understand him well." Popov's co-host and wife Olga Skabeeva noted, "The left and the Blacks are protesting against our candidate Trump."Putin's Russia did its best to help Trump win re-election, by disseminating the alleged sex-tape "kompromat" about Hunter Biden designed to harm Biden's candidacy. State TV hosts and pundits expressed deep frustration that, unlike in 2016, in 2020 the American media didn't fall for these disinformation tactics.Nonetheless, Trump's baseless claims of election fraud and premature declaration of his own victory spell out a hotly contested electoral process. Russian state media channel Rossiya-1 predicted a "prolonged political crisis" in the United States, which is beneficial for Moscow. Co-host of 60 Minutes Olga Skabeeva explained, "We're hoping that while they're dealing with their own problems, they'll have no time to impose any more Russian sanctions."Yulia Makarova, the host of a news show on the state media channel Rossiya-24, echoed the same expectation: "There is hope that after elections, the Congress will focus on internal affairs, and not on sanctions against Russia." Makarova said that the anticipated economic stimulus will weaken the U.S. dollar and echoed Bloomberg's prediction that in terms of the strengthened ruble, Russia would be the biggest beneficiary of Trump's re-election.State media outlet RIA Novosti noted that a Biden presidency would lead to increased pressure against Russia. Channel Rossiya-24 predicted that Biden's election would increase the likelihood of new anti-Russian sanctions. On the other hand, the co-host of 60 Minutes, Olga Skabeeva, described Trump as someone who is trying to destroy the American system—which suits the Kremlin just fine. To help Russia's preferred candidate and discredit democratic elections, Kremlin-controlled state media outlets echoed Trump's baseless claims of election fraud. RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan even took to Twitter the day after the vote to spew the same complaints Trump has been making for weeks, if not months. "Neither free nor fair," Simonyan proclaimed, capping off a Twitter thread in which she alleged "numerous violations" and "numerous reports of corruption" without providing any specifics. She also alleged "censorship on major media platforms," apparently in reference to social media flagging many of Trump's Election Night posts as "misleading" for his claims of a plot to "steal" the vote.Similar efforts will undoubtedly unfold via Russia's underground disinformation channels, in anticipation of the final election results that may spell out trouble for Moscow's favored presidential contender.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. EU's Barnier says 'very serious' gaps still in Brexit trade talks Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:01 AM PST The European Union's Brexit negotiator said on Wednesday "very serious divergences" remained in trade talks with Britain and suggested the bloc would rather accept disruptions in commerce in eight weeks' time than yield on its key demands. Britain left the EU in January and talks on salvaging a trillion dollars worth of annual free trade between the estranged allies are now in their final stretch before London's transition out of the bloc completes on Dec. 31. |
Death of England: Delroy, National Theatre, review: a blazing performance snuffed out too soon Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST How's this for the most dramatic (and dismaying) rebirth in modern British theatrical history? For the past seven months the National has been closed by Covid-19, causing large job losses and the biggest threat to the organisation's survival since it opened on the South Bank in 1976. Finally, with NT director Rufus Norris and team taking the bold decision to remodel the Olivier into an in-the-round space (cutting capacity from over 1,000 to around 500), it has welcomed audiences back. But with the kind of timing worthy of Puck at his most mischievous, Lockdown 2 turned the opening night of Roy Williams and Clint Dyer's state-of-the-nation monologue into a temporary terminus. Before turning to Death of England: Delroy – a companion piece to a monologue that Williams and Dyer (who directs) premiered at the start of the year – the new configuration and effort to reassure visitors is worthy of praise. It's a big deal to be able to step back into this space and find its ambience still inviting, not eerily deserted. That said, the new playing area (with some audience seating encircling a section of the stage) could hardly be more exposed. And that fits the thrust of Death of England's gladiatorial tendency. Michael Balogun (stepping in at short notice after Hamilton star Giles Terera was laid low by appendicitis) paces and prowls a cruciform walkway which, when a red carpet is rolled out across it, plainly resembles the St George's flag. The earlier play took us inside the fizzing, tormented mind of thirtysomething Michael (Rafe Spall), the grieving son of a Brexit-voting, closet racist Essex flower-stall owner. We now spend 90 minutes in the company of Michael's best mate, Delroy. A similar psychological meltdown is the order of the macho day; only this time the forces conspiring against the protagonist emblematise brutish and/or insensitive white Britain. In the first play we gleaned that Delroy had shacked up with Michael's sister Carly. Now she's about to give birth to a girl, but things go awry for Delroy as he dashes for the Tube, only to get collared by the rozzers (or to use his Jamaican slang, Babylon). |

Flash of luck: Astronomers find cosmic radio burst source Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:03 AM PST A flash of luck helped astronomers solve a cosmic mystery: What causes powerful but fleeting radio bursts that zip and zigzag through the universe? Scientists have known about these energetic pulses — called fast radio bursts — for about 13 years and have seen them coming from outside our galaxy, which makes it harder to trace them back to what's causing them. Then this April, a rare but considerably weaker burst coming from inside our own Milky Way galaxy was spotted by two dissimilar telescopes: one a California doctoral student's set of handmade antenna s, which included actual cake pans, the other a $20 million Canadian observatory. |
US Formally Withdraws From Paris Climate Agreement Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:59 AM PST The United States became the first nation to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement on Wednesday. The Paris Agreement is a 2015 United Nations deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with 196 signatories. What Happened: President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreeement in June 2017. UN regulations mean the decision takes effect Wednesday -- the day after the U.S. election. On Wednesday, the outcome of the 2020 election remains unclear as vote counting continues following a flood of absentee ballots cast during the coronavirus pandemic. Why It's Important: Climate change remains one of the biggest global challenges. This year has been another one of extreme weather conditions, with natural disasters occurring worldwide. From bushfires in Australia to flooding in the U.K., the climate catastrophe is a huge issue pushing sustainable investing to the forefront. It is possible that the U.S. could rejoin the Paris Agreement if a future president wants to opt back in. Voters strip ‘Plantations’ from Rhode Island’s formal name Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:06 AM PST Rhode Island will now be officially known as ... Rhode Island. The smallest state in the country will no longer have the distinction of also having the longest official name after voters approved a statewide referendum to strip the words "and Providence Plantations" from Rhode Island's formal name — the culmination of a long running debate revived amid the nation's reckoning with racial injustice. Officially, Rhode Island was incorporated as The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations when it declared statehood in 1790. |

Posted: 04 Nov 2020 06:47 AM PST Has the United States ever heard that old saying about the pot calling the kettle black? Because things sure got awkward on Wednesday morning, when the U.S. Embassy condemned the presidential election in West Africa's Cote d'Ivoire for being undemocratic -- shortly after America's own leader faced such accusations domestically. On the surface, there is little comparison between the United States' elections, which are by all expert accounts fair and legitimate, and the situation in Cote d'Ivoire, where President Alassane Ouattara won a third term with 94.27 percent of the vote. Tragically, violent clashes in the nation over the election have also resulted in at least a dozen deaths, with thousands fleeing the country, the United Nations has reported. In issuing its condemnation on Wednesday, the United States joined a chorus of international voices decrying the violence and breakdown of democratic processes in Cote d'Ivoire. But one line in particular stood out in the U.S. statement: "The United States calls on Cote d'Ivoire's leaders to show commitment to the democratic process and the rule of law." The finger-wagging might seem a bit hypocritical, particularly after President Trump falsely declared victory in states he hasn't yet won, baselessly raised doubts about the integrity of the election, and threatened to go to the Supreme Court to stop the counting of legitimately-cast ballots. Read the full U.S. statement, shared by The Washington Post's West Africa bureau chief Danielle Paquette, below. > The U.S. urged leaders in Ivory Coast to stick to a "democratic" election process hours after President Trump prematurely declared victory.https://t.co/peZUcPMreL> > -- Danielle Paquette (@DPAQreport) November 4, 2020More stories from theweek.com The left just got crushed A Biden presidency might essentially be over before it can begin Biden has now received more votes for president than any other candidate in U.S. history |

Election 2020 Today: No winner yet, Trump's court threat Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:24 AM PST NO WINNER: President Donald Trump carried the prized battleground of Florida, then he and Democrat Joe Biden shifted their focus to three Northern industrial states — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania — that could prove crucial in determining who wins the White House. A late burst of votes in Wisconsin from Milwaukee gave Biden a small lead, but the state remained too early to call early Wednesday. |
Coronavirus cause of Algeria president's hospitalization Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:24 AM PST Algeria's secretive presidency confirmed Wednesday that the mysterious illness that caused President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to be hospitalized in Germany last month was the coronavirus. The presidency said that the state of 74-year-old Tebboune's health is "gradually improving" and he "continues to receive treatment in a specialized German hospital after contracting COVID-19." It was the first time that officials explicitly mentioned COVID-19 in connection with the Oct. 28 hospitalization. |

Biden wins Michigan, Wisconsin, now on brink of White House Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:40 AM PST Joe Biden won the battleground prizes of Michigan and Wisconsin on Wednesday, reclaiming a key part of the "blue wall" that slipped away from Democrats four years ago and dramatically narrowing President Donald Trump's pathway to reelection. A full day after Election Day, neither candidate had cleared the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House. |
EXPLAINER: Why AP called Wisconsin for Biden Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:17 AM PST Democrat Joe Biden has flipped the state of Wisconsin, a crucial presidential battleground that President Donald Trump carried by less than a percentage point in 2016. The Associated Press called the race for Biden after election officials there said all outstanding ballots had been counted, except for a few hundred in one township and a small number of provisional ballots around the state. The former vice president's lead there is now so great that there is no way the remaining votes would allow Trump to catch up. |
EXPLAINER: Why AP called Michigan for Biden Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:53 AM PST Democrat Joe Biden has won the electoral battleground of Michigan, the third state that President Donald Trump carried in 2016 that the former vice president has flipped. The Associated Press declared Biden the winner of the state at 5:56 p.m. EST Wednesday after conducting an analysis of votes and remaining ballots left to be counted. It showed there were not enough votes left in Republican-leaning areas for Trump to catch Biden's lead. |
World waits nervously, impatiently for US vote count Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:43 AM PST From Ford Model T cars that popped off the assembly line in just 90 minutes to 60-second service for burgers, the United States has long had a major hand in making the world a frenetic and impatient place, primed and hungry for instant gratification. Without an immediate result, the guessing game of trying to figure out whether — and how —President Donald Trump or challenger Joe Biden would end up in the White House quickly turned global. There was gloating from parts of the world that have previously been on the receiving end of U.S. criticism about their elections and governance. |
Libya’s rivals urge UN Security Council to back cease-fire Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:40 AM PST Libya's rivals wrapped up their military talks with a call to the U.N. Security Council to adopt a binding resolution to implement a cease-fire deal inked last month, the U.N. said. The two-day talks in the oasis town of Ghadames, which concluded late Tuesday, were the first face-to-face negotiations inside Libya since last year's months-long attack on the capital by forces loyal to the east-based military commander Khalifa Hifter. The two sides agreed to meet again in the contested coastal city of Sirte later in November, and to form a sub-committee to oversee the return of all Libyan forces to their camps, as mentioned in the Oct. 23 cease-fire deal reached in Geneva, the U.N. support mission in Libya said late Tuesday. |
