Cybersecurity firm finds hacker selling info on 148 million U.S. voters Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:35 PM PDT A cybersecurity firm says it has found a hacker selling personally identifying information from more than 200 million Americans, including the voter registration data of 148 million. The revelation underscored how vulnerable Americans are to email targeting by criminals and foreign adversaries, even as American officials announced that Iran and Russia had obtained voter registration data and email addresses with an eye toward interfering in the 2020 election. Much of the data identified by Trustwave, a global cybersecurity firm, is publicly available, and almost all of it is the kind that is regularly bought and sold by legitimate businesses. |

FBI says Iran and Russia have interfered in the 2020 election Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:17 PM PDT |
US says Iran, Russia obtained voter registration info Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:16 PM PDT |
Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:07 PM PDT Russia and Iran have obtained "voter registration information" on American citizens and are using it in their separate schemes to influence next month's presidential election, the Trump administration's top intelligence official said Wednesday. In a hastily arranged press conference at Justice Department headquarters in Washington, John Ratcliffe, the director of the Office of National Intelligence, said the two countries are using the data to target individual voters with "false information" to "cause confusion, sow chaos and undermine your confidence in American democracy" with just two weeks to go until Election Day. |
Federal law enforcement says Iran may be behind “spoofed” emails sent to Florida voters Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:07 PM PDT |
Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:01 PM PDT Iran is responsible for emails meant to intimidate American voters and sow unrest in multiple states, while Tehran and Moscow also obtained voter registration with the goal of interfering in the presidential election, US officials said at a rare news conference on Wednesday night - just two weeks before the vote. The United States' director of National Intelligence, John Ratcliffe, announced that Iran specifically sent "spoofed" emails to Americans "designed to intimidate voters, incite social unrest, and damage President Trump". He said Iran had also distributed a video that implied that people could send in fraudulent ballots, including from outside the United States. Mr Ratcliffe said both Iran and Russia seek to use information obtained "to communicate false information to registered voters that they hope will cause confusion, sow chaos, and undermine confidence in American democracy". "These actions are desperate attempts by desperate adversaries," he said. The announcement came after registered Democratic voters reported receiving personally addressed emails in the name of the Proud Boys armed militia group. "You will vote for Trump on election day or we will come after you," the emails said. The voter-intimidation operation apparently used email addresses obtained from state voter registration lists, which include party affiliation and home addresses and can include email addresses and phone numbers. Those addresses were then used in an apparently widespread targeted spamming operation. The senders claimed they would know which candidate the recipient was voting for in the November 3 election, for which early voting is ongoing. Mr Ratcliffe and US Federal Bureau of Investigation director Chris Wray said the US would impose costs on any foreign countries interfering in the 2020 US election. Despite the Iranian and Russian actions, they said Americans could be confident that their vote would be counted. Mr Ratcliffe and Mr Wray did not explain how the Russians and Iranians had obtained the voter information, or how the Russians might be using it. Mr Wray stressed that US election systems remained safe and "resilient". "Rest assured that we are prepared for the possibility of actions by those hostile to democracy," Mr Ratcliffe said. |

Iran behind threatening pro-Trump emails to U.S. voters, feds say Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:49 PM PDT |
FBI says Iran behind threatening emails sent to Florida Democrats Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:49 PM PDT |
FBI Says Iran Behind Voter Intimidation Operation Spoofing Proud Boys Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:46 PM PDT Iran used the guise of the far-right Proud Boys to send threatening emails to voters earlier this week, U.S. intelligence officials announced late Wednesday. At a hastily called evening press conference, Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe spelled out concerted foreign efforts to sow chaos in the ongoing presidential election."We would like to alert the public that we have identified that two foreign actors, Iran and Russia, have taken specific actions to influence public opinion relating to our elections.... We have already seen Iran sending spoofed emails designed to intimidate voters, incite social unrest, and damage President Trump," Ratcliffe said, adding that Iran was also "distributing other content" to imply voter fraud."Although we have not seen the same actions from Russia, we are aware that they have obtained some voter registration information," he said."If you receive an intimidating or manipulative email in your inbox, don't be alarmed and do not spread it," Ratcliffe continued.FBI Director Christopher Wray said officials are "coordinating with the private sector—both technology and social media companies—to make sure that their platforms are not used by foreign adversaries to spread disinformation and propaganda.""You should be confident that your vote counts. Early, unverified claims to the contrary should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism," Wray said. The announcement came just a day after authorities in Florida and Alaska sought help from the feds to investigate a flurry of emails sent to Democratic voters demanding they vote for Trump and switch their party affiliation. The emails, which had been made to look like they were sent from the Proud Boys, a right-wing paramilitary group, warned recipients that the group had all their private information and suggested that any attempt to disobey the directive would have nasty consequences."You will vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you," the messages read. The Proud Boys have been a magnet for trolls since Trump ignited controversy by nodding at them in the middle of his first debate against Democratic opponent Joe Biden last month. One internet hoaxer openly admitted to The Daily Beast that he'd sent out phony Proud Boys recruitment texts in an attempt to "help drive voter turnout" and even set up a fake "assault rifle" raffle. That trolls tied to Iran might seize on the group's notoriety and very real concerns across the country about possible Election Day violence should come as no surprise. Pro-Iranian and Iranian-linked trolls on Twitter have been active over the past year in efforts to meddle in American politics on issues ranging from the election campaign to the coronavirus pandemic. In September, the FBI tipped off Twitter about a network of 130 fake accounts posing as pro and anti-Trump Americans which were run by operators in Iran. The accounts, according to Twitter, were "attempting to disrupt the public conversation during the first 2020 U.S. Presidential Debate" and the social media company quickly suspended them. At least one account referenced President Trump's comments that the Proud Boys need to "stand by and stand down."In early October, the Justice Department seized 92 fake news domains, first linked to Iran by researchers at FireEye in 2018, which it said were run by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.Over the past year, a number of Iranian-linked and pro-Iranian Twitter accounts identified by The Daily Beast have sought to seize on divisive issues in American politics with fake stories hosted at spoofed websites. The accounts have floated racist conspiracy theories about a Navy ship fire with a forged letter from Sen. Tammy Duckworth, and impersonated a World Health Organization executive and a prominent public health expert, Dr. Zeke Emanuel, in order to push racist fake narratives about coronavirus vaccine experiments on Black Americans and treatment for the disease in FEMA camps.Earlier this month, Twitter accounts identified by The Daily Beast and Mandiant Threat Intelligence, and attributed to Iran by Twitter, amplified fake tweets from a hacked Israeli news outlet's Twitter account. The messages sought to convince social media users that President Trump was dying of COVID-19 and that Black Lives Matter protesters had fired gunshots outside the home of Bill and Hilary Clinton.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Face to face: Trump, Biden to meet for final debate Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:14 PM PDT President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden are set to square off in their final debate Thursday, one of the last high-profile opportunities for the trailing incumbent to change the trajectory of an increasingly contentious campaign. Worried about losing the White House, some advisers are urging Trump to trade his aggressive demeanor from the first debate for a lower-key style that puts Biden more squarely in the spotlight. Biden, who has stepped off the campaign trail in favor of debate prep, expects Trump to get intensely personal. |
Divided reactions in US as pope backs same-sex civil unions Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:08 PM PDT LGBTQ Catholics and their allies in the U.S. welcomed Pope Francis' endorsement of same-sex civil unions, the first time he's done so as pontiff, while some prominent members including a bishop said Wednesday that he was blatantly contradicting church teaching. Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, was one of the first conservative Catholic leaders to go public with criticism. "The Pope's statement clearly contradicts what has been the long-standing teaching of the Church about same-sex unions," Tobin said in a statement. |
Gaza nurses protest loss of Israeli permit, layoffs Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:20 PM PDT A group of nurses from the Gaza Strip staged a protest in a public square on Wednesday, saying an Israeli travel ban has led the Jerusalem hospital where they worked for many years to fire them. The seven nurses gathered at a public square in Gaza City, wearing lab coats and holding banners that said: "Firing us is a death sentence on our profession and families." "We never expected that Makassed would dismiss us arbitrarily," said Baher Lulu, 53, a critical care nurse who said he joined the hospital 30 years ago, when travel from Gaza to Jerusalem did not require Israeli permission. |
The Jewish state is less secure because Trump has not been Israel’s friend | Opinion Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:47 PM PDT "Israel Said to Be Source of Secret Intelligence Trump Gave to Russians," said a New York Times headline on May 16, 2017. While this story reads like a spy novel, it was all too real for the United States' top intelligence and defense partner in the Middle East, Israel. President Trump placing his own personal relationship with Vladimir Putin above U.S.-Israel ties was not surprising, sadly, but it betrayed Israel's trust and harmed its security. |
5 questions as Trump and Biden prepare for final debate Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:16 PM PDT President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, meet on the debate stage for the second and final time Thursday night in Tennessee. Trump cannot afford a status quo debate. National polls show him losing to Biden, and while some battleground state polls are tighter, even some of Trump's own allies are worrying aloud about the prospect of a serious defeat. |

US urges countries to withdraw from UN nuke ban treaty Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:47 AM PDT The United States is urging countries that have ratified a U.N. treaty to ban nuclear weapons to withdraw their support as the pact nears the 50 ratifications needed to trigger its entry into force, which supporters say could happen this week. The U.S. letter to signatories, obtained by The Associated Press, says the five original nuclear powers -- the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France -- and America's NATO allies "stand unified in our opposition to the potential repercussions" of the treaty. |

Salam Erekat said on Twitter that her father remained intubated and connected to an ECMO machine, which does the work of the lungs by transferring oxygen into blood. Trump the dancer? His moves to 'YMCA' at rallies are a hit Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:51 AM PDT President Donald Trump, a man who is famously particular about his appearance, is fully embracing doing a dad dance to the Village People's "YMCA" as the finale to his rallies in the campaign's closing stretch. Backstage, top staff and campaign aides often join in with the more traditional take, using their bodies to spell out Y-M-C-A to the strains of the cheesy '70s anthem. Trump's rally dance has become a rare moment of levity in an otherwise miserable campaign year marked by a deadly pandemic, an economic recession and racial turmoil. |
Virus spikes have officials looking to shore up hospitals Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT Hospitals across the United States are starting to buckle from a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, with several states setting records for the number of people hospitalized and leaders scrambling to find extra beds and staff. New highs in cases have been reported in states big and small — from Idaho to Ohio — in recent days. Dr. Jay Butler, deputy director for infectious diseases for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Wednesday the United States is seeing a "distressing trend" with COVID-19 cases growing in nearly three-quarters of the country. |
Spain 1st in western Europe to hit 1 million virus cases Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:33 AM PDT Spain became the first country in western Europe to accumulate more than 1 million confirmed COVID-19 infections on Wednesday as the nation of 47 million struggles to contain a resurgence of the virus. The health ministry said that its accumulative case load since the start of the pandemic reached 1,005,295 after reporting 16,973 more cases in the past 24 hours. Experts say that, as in most countries, the real numbers of infections and deaths are probably much higher because insufficient testing, asymptomatic cases and other issues impede authorities from capturing the true scale of the outbreak. |
Will voting in a non-battleground state make a difference? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:59 AM PDT The importance of controlling the Senate is evident in the confirmation hearings for President Donald Trump's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Amy Coney Barrett. How they draw those voting districts could determine which party has an advantage in future elections, and thus which policies are pursued. |
A decade after deadly cholera epidemic, Haiti awaits help Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:51 AM PDT Ten years after a cholera epidemic swept through Haiti and killed nearly 10,000 people, families of victims still struggle financially and await compensation from the United Nations as many continue to drink from and bathe in a river that became ground zero for the waterborne disease. It was one of the world's worst outbreaks of the preventable disease in recent history, sickening more than 850,000 people in a country of 11 million that had not reported a cholera outbreak for more than a century. The last confirmed case in Haiti was reported in January 2019, but the epidemic's aftermath is still felt across much of the country, most acutely in places like Meille, where Haitians remain exposed to unsanitary conditions and are often unable to make up for the loss of income after the main breadwinners of their family died. |

Analysis: Biden presidency could cut slow path to resumed Iran, Venezuela oil exports Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:10 AM PDT Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Joe Biden's promised return to diplomacy with OPEC-members Iran and Venezuela could cut a path for a return of their oil exports should he win, but not before many months at least of verifications, talks and deal-making. The timing of a potential resumption of shipments is crucial to world oil markets: U.S. President Donald Trump's unilateral sanctions on the two countries since taking office in 2017 have blocked up to 3 million barrels per day (bpd), or 3% of world supply. Iran has taken the biggest hit, with exports shrinking by around 2 million bpd to around 500,000 bpd. |
Priti Patel set to extend crackdown on foreign criminals after Brexit Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:49 AM PDT Foreigners with a criminal conviction in the past year could be banned from entering the UK under a post-Brexit immigration crackdown on overseas offenders. Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, has widened her planned UK ban on criminals jailed for more than a year to include people from both the EU and non-EU countries with less serious convictions. Under the changes to be laid before Parliament on Thursday, the UK will ditch the current "soft" EU rules that only allow immigration officials to ban anyone who poses "a genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat affecting one of the fundamental interests of society." The new rules, which take effect on January 1, 2021, will bar all foreign criminals, including those from the EU sentenced to at least a year in jail, from entering the UK. Any foreigner coming to the UK for first time, who has been jailed for less than a year, will also be barred from entering. Any visitor or new arrival who has a non-custodial sentence in the previous 12 months, such as a drink drive conviction, could also be barred. A foreign criminal with a sentence of less than 12 months, but who has ties to the UK through residence or relatives, could still be barred but will be dealt with on a case by case basis. The Home Secretary will reserve the right to bar persistent offenders or anyone whose presence in the UK "is not conducive to the public good." The Government will also have the power to remove rough sleepers from the UK "as a last resort" if efforts to get them accommodation and benefits, or citizenship through the EU settlement scheme, are rebuffed. The Home Office admitted attempts to deny entry could be thwarted or delayed if someone claimed it was a breach under the European Convention on Human Rights, or if their criminal offence was not recognised in the UK. Ms Patel said: "For too long, EU rules have forced us to allow dangerous foreign criminals, who abuse our values and threaten our way of life, onto our streets. "The UK will be safer thanks to firmer and fairer border controls where foreign criminals, regardless of nationality, will be subject to the same criminality rules." |

Global democracy at risk from cyberattack 'onslaught': Microsoft president Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:11 AM PDT Democracies around the world are under a constant barrage of cyberattacks that must be identified, called out and stopped, Microsoft President Brad Smith told a gathering of security and defence officials on Wednesday. Speaking at the Atlantic Future Forum, Smith named Russia, China, Iran and North Korea as the states most frequently engaged in malicious cyberattacks targeting elections and the domestic politics of other countries. "Five years ago, I think we thought about this principally in terms of attacks on, say, conventional infrastructure or our military capabilities, but today I think it's just become an onslaught on democracy itself." |
Can't crush this: Beetle armor gives clues to tougher planes Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:08 AM PDT It's a beetle that can withstand bird pecks, animal stomps and even being rolled over by a Toyota Camry. "This beetle is super tough," said Purdue University civil engineer Pablo Zavattieri, who was among a group of researchers that ran over the insect with a car as part of a new study. The species — aptly named diabolical ironclad beetle — owes its might to an unusual armor that is layered and pieced together like a jigsaw, according to the study by Zavattieri and his colleagues published in Nature on Wednesday. |

Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:20 AM PDT The storyline of the presidential campaign seems to be solidifying, as polls show Joe Biden maintaining a sizable lead over President Donald J. Trump. But the lead may not be insurmountable, and the election is not over. The history of polling in modern elections suggests that the endgame could yet be altered by a number of disruptive scenarios.None of the following narrative-altering scenarios can be considered a certainty. But only one is rather far-fetched. All are informed by the content of my latest book, "Lost in a Gallup: Polling Failure in U.S. Presidential Elections."Here are descriptions of five prospective scenarios, in order of possibility. In a bow to even-handedness, a reality check is appended to each of them. 1\. A powerful late October surprise disrupts the campaign trajectoryJarring, out-of-the-blue developments have happened often enough in presidential election campaigns as to be almost expected. Remember James Comey's announcement 11 days before the 2016 election that the FBI had reopened its investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails? It may have shifted enough votes in battleground states to elect Trump. To alter the trajectory in 2020, the October surprise probably would have to be akin to a very public meltdown by Joe Biden – a "lying, dog-faced pony soldier" moment on steroids – that would clearly signal he's not up to the job. While Biden's gaffes, exaggerations and garbled comments have been on frequent display during the 2020 campaign, they haven't been concentrated or dramatic enough to puncture his advantage in preelection polls. Why it won't happen: Presidential elections may be growing immune to late October surprises, given the popularity of early voting and the advent of extensive mail-in balloting. As such, millions of Americans will have cast ballots for president well before Election Day – tempering the impact of any late October surprise. 2\. Significant polling errors occur in key states, enough for Trump to win an electoral vote majorityIn states such as Wisconsin and Michigan, which were crucial to the outcome in 2016, preelection polls pointed to a clear lead for Hillary Clinton – an advantage that evaporated when votes were counted. Clinton's polling advantage in Wisconsin, for example, was 6.5 percentage points at campaign's end; Trump carried the state by less than a point. Such errors are not entirely out of the question in 2020.Why it won't happen: This scenario essentially is a 2016 replay. If the history of election polling tells us anything, it is not to expect elections, or polling failures, to replicate themselves. Not only that, but considerably more scrutiny is being devoted to polling in battleground states in 2020 than four years ago. Such attention may render this scenario unlikely. 3\. The 1996 scenario materializesThis is a nuanced scenario that recalls Bill Clinton's 1996 reelection, when he defeated Republican Bob Dole by 8.5 percentage points – a comfortable margin but not the blowout many polls and pollsters had anticipated. At the end of October 1996, veteran California pollster Mervin Field declared Clinton was "heading for as big a win" as Ronald Reagan's 18-point landslide in 1984, when he carried 49 states. The polls in 1996 didn't miss on the winner, but some were well off the final margin. For example, the end-of-campaign CBS News survey estimated Clinton's lead at 18 points, nearly a 10-point miss. Why it won't happen: Polling failure in presidential elections is rarely duplicated. A rerun of the 1996 scenario depends on Biden holding a double-digit polling lead in the campaign's final stages – a time when presidential races tend to tighten. Biden's aggregate lead in national polls, as compiled by the RealClearPolitics website, stood at 8.6 percentage points two weeks before Election Day. 4\. 'Shy Trump' voters emerge en masse, decisively so in battleground statesThis theory maintains that because they want to avoid disapproval, some Trump supporters conceal their preferences from pollsters and others. They are reluctant to acknowledge support for such a divisive character. Because they are guarded about their intentions, these undercover supporters skew polling data because they supposedly are so hard to find, or fail to answer candidly when they are interviewed. By turning out in great numbers, the theory goes, "Shy Trump" voters could tip the electoral vote to the president. Why it won't happen: Such voters probably do not exist in numbers large enough to alter a national election. Assessments by pollsters and polling organizations have suggested as much. Besides, Trump's outdoor rallies indicate that his supporters aren't exactly reserved about expressing political preferences. 5\. An epic polling collapse, akin to that of 1948, takes placeThe famous "Dewey defeats Truman" election signaled a stunning and never-since-duplicated breakdown of national election polling. George Gallup and other pollsters confidently predicted President Harry Truman's loss to Republican Thomas E. Dewey – and their polling set expectations for the country's press and pundits. Truman won by 4.5 percentage points in the greatest polling embarrassment in U.S. presidential history. Why it won't happen: Polling since 1948 has become more sophisticated in techniques and more numerous in practitioners. It is almost inconceivable that contemporary election pollsters will be profoundly and uniformly wrong in 2020. While 1948 does offer an intriguing prospective precedent, this is a most improbable scenario.[Get our most insightful politics and election stories. Officer may face charges in killing of autistic Palestinian Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:10 AM PDT Israeli prosecutors on Wednesday recommended charging a police officer with reckless manslaughter in the deadly shooting of an autistic Palestinian man in Jerusalem's Old City earlier this year. The decision came nearly five months after the shooting of Eyad Hallaq. Hallaq's family, which had criticized the slow pace of the investigation and prosecutors' claim that security cameras in the area had malfunctioned, condemned Wednesday's decision. |
AP-NORC/USAFacts poll: Many in US distrust campaign info Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:00 AM PDT In a presidential election year that has thrown the country's divisions into stark relief, Americans can agree on this: Misinformation about government and politics is a major problem. A new survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Opinion Research and USAFacts finds that while voters say it's pretty easy to find accurate information about voting, they have a harder time knowing whether there's any factual basis for the information they're getting from and about the candidates. "The misinformation, it's just blossomed to the point where it's unmanageable," said nurse Liana Price, 34, of Tampa Bay, Florida, who supports Democrat Joe Biden in the contest against President Donald Trump and worries misinformation about the election could sway voters. |
Sudanese return to streets over dire living conditions Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:55 AM PDT Sudanese protesters took to the streets in the capital and across the country Wednesday over dire living conditions and a deadly crackdown on demonstrators in the east earlier this month. The protests came on the anniversary of a 1964 uprising that ended six years of military rule. Sudan is currently ruled by a joint civilian-military government, following the popular uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir last year. |

Worldwide Aviation Fuel Industry to 2025 - Key Drivers, Restraints and Opportunities Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:38 AM PDT Dublin, Oct. 21, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Global Aviation Fuel Market - Forecasts from 2020 to 2025" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. Global aviation fuel market was valued at US$178.560 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.00% over the forecast period to reach a total market size of US$253.261 billion in 2025. Aviation fuel is a type of kerosene-based fuel which is used to operate an aircraft. Aviation fuels reduce the risk of icing or explosion due to high temperature and is primarily used by military aircrafts as well as commercial airlines in order to maximize fuel efficiency while lowering down the operational cost. Growing global travel and tourism industry Booming travel and tourism industry is one of the major drivers of global aviation fuel market. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals grew 5 per cent in 2018, reaching the figure to 1.4 billion which was reached two years ahead of the UNWTO forecast. This high growth in the number of international tourists is significantly driven by a relatively strong global economy with expanding middle class population base in emerging economies, new business models, technological advances, and affordable travel costs and visa facilitation. In conjunction to this, export earnings generated by tourism also increased to US$1.7 trillion in 2018, thus making the sector a true global force for economic growth and development by way of creating more and more employment. With growing number of air travel passengers worldwide, the demand for commercial aircrafts is also rising among different airlines. According to the World Bank Group, the number of air passenger carried globally has surged from 2.787 billion in 2011 to 4.233 billion in 2018. With rising number of aircrafts on duty, the demand for aviation fuel is also escalating which is fuelling the market growth at a substantial rate. New flight routes and heavy flow of investments in new airports worldwide is also a contributing factor to the global aviation fuel market growth. In September 2018, for instance, the Russian government announced its plans to invest US$24 billion on the country's infrastructure including new airports and highways over the next three years. In October 2019, India announced its plans to start with 100 additional airports by 2024 which also include 1,000 new routes connecting smaller villages and towns. The construction of the second airport in Sydney, Australia began in 2018 and is planned to be completed by 2026. Rise in military budget across different countries Rising focus of governments on military sector is another factor that is spurring the growth of aviation fuel market. These continuous increase in military and defense budget is majorly attributed to political tensions among different nations and rising cases of terrorist attacks worldwide. According to the latest report of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military expenditure was totalled to $1,917 billion in 2019 which is the highest level since 1988. Also, the global military burden (global military expenditure as a share of GDP) increased from $243 in 2018 to $249 in 2019. This rise in military expenditure also includes heavy investments in new military aircrafts by different nations. Recently in July 2020, the Government of India has approved Rs. 38,000 crore deal with Russia to purchase MiG-29 fighter jets while upgrading over 50 MiG-29s amid political tensions with China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Pentagon asked for $56.9 billion in the fiscal budget 2021 to be invested in the military's air domain out of which the Defense Department planned to buy 79 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters of worth US$11.4 billion. In November 2019, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defense signed a $618 million contract to purchase 24 of B-250 light-attack aircraft from domestic manufacturer Calidus. Continuous focus on reducing carbon footprint As the global aircraft industry is expanding at a decent pace, competition among aircraft fuel production in all sectors is also getting intense. Stringent regulations regarding sustainability of aviation fuel is further boosting the competition among aviation fuel manufacturers which is also positively impacting the overall growth of the global aviation fuel market. As such, biofuels that can significantly reduce carbon emissions and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which are still under research and development offers lucrative opportunities for the growth of aviation fuel industry in the near future. Recently in July 2020, the operator of the Gazprom Neft aviation refuelling business, Gazpromneft-Aero, has launched an integrated laboratory information system (LIS) for analysing both qualitative and quantitative characteristics of aviation fuel. Commercial aviation industry is also moving towards sustainable environmental practices and gradually increasing the use of sustainable aviation biofuel (SAF). United Airlines was the first U.S. airline to begin the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for regularly scheduled flights with the departure of United Flight 708 from Los Angeles International Airport. In March 2019, airplane manufacturer Boeing announced that the company will be offering airlines and operators the option of powering their new commercial jet with biofuel for return flights. This initiative of Boeing aims to drive down emissions by up to 80 per cent and protect the environment. Governments across nations are also focusing on the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which will also offer a great potential for the overall market growth during the next five years. Although SAF is not widely available in Canada at present, continuous rise in demand across the airline industry to reduce its carbon footprint is encouraging the Canadian government to increase its supply. In November 2019, SKyNRG, the Green Aviation Research and Development Network (GARDN), Waterfall Group, and Vancouver Airport Authority launched BioPortYVR project in Canada. This project aims to ramp up the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the country. Asia Pacific accounts for a significant share in the global aviation fuel market By geography, the global aviation fuel market has been segmented as major regional markets- North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa (MEA), and Asia Pacific (APAC). North America accounts for a substantial share in the global aviation fuel market owing to the continuous rise in demand for different type of aircrafts including military, commercial, and private. Europe is also a leading aviation fuel market on account of well-established aviation industry coupled with the presence of major aircraft manufacturers in the region. However, Asia Pacific (APAC) is projected to witness a substantial compound annual growth rate during the forecast period. This growth is majorly attributed to the rapidly growing travel and tourism industry across the APAC countries. There has been a rise in investments in the tourism sector by India, China, and South-east Asian economies in the past few years. The number of both international and domestic tourists is continuously rising in this region. Increasing disposable incomes and living standards with hectic work lifestyle is encouraging people to regularly take vacations. Furthermore, increased rate of globalization has also led to a rise in business air travel trips across the region as well as globe. Thus, burgeoning rise in air travel passengers, both international and domestic, is supporting the growth of aviation fuel market in Asia Pacific. Supportive government policies to construct new airports in order to manage this rising influx of tourists is also a driving factor for the growth of this regional market. Severe impact of COVID-19 on global aviation industry The recent pandemic outbreak caused by COVID-19 has negatively impacted almost each and every industry including automotive and construction. However, the global travel and tourism industry has been hit the hardest by this pandemic. The novel coronavirus disease, which broke out in Wuhan, China, in the beginning of 2020, and then continued to spread like a wild fire throughout the globe, pushed governments to impose nationwide lockdowns and close national borders in order to contain the spread of the pandemic. The duration of the pandemic is still uncertain, and since inability of governments to contain the spread can increase the burden of this disease significantly, air travel remains restricted. A steep decline in the number of commercial flights across the globe has been driving down the demand for aviation fuel. Although some airline carriers continue to operate while ensuring compliance to strict guidelines from governments, it is not enough to recoup the slump. Reluctance of people towards air travel, on account of high degree of fear of contracting the disease, is also limiting the number of flights per month. This trend is expected to continue till the time the world has at least one reliable vaccine or cure for the virus.
