Brazil's Rousseff makes final survival bid as Senate poised to oust her Posted: 10 May 2016 02:34 PM PDT By Lisandra Paraguassu and Anthony Boadle BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff took her battle to survive impeachment to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, in a last-ditch attempt to stay in office a day before the Senate will likely vote to try her for breaking budget laws. Attorney General Eduardo Cardozo, the government's top lawyer, asked the Supreme Court to annul impeachment proceedings arguing they were politically motivated and had no legal basis. "I will not resign, that never crossed my mind," Rousseff said in a speech to a conference hall full of women supporters who cheered when she vowed to keep fighting her removal. |
Canadian oil production trickles back as wildfire threat eases Posted: 10 May 2016 03:45 PM PDT By Liz Hampton and Nia Williams EDMONTON, Alberta (Reuters) - Oil sands companies around the Canadian energy center of Fort McMurray began to restart operations on Tuesday after an out-of-control wildfire forced a week-long shutdown. Top provincial and industry officials said production in much of the region should ramp up soon. Facilities north of Fort McMurray that had been shuttered largely because of heavy smoke rather than fire were seen as likely to come back on line in a matter of days in many cases. |
At least 10 killed in Afghan suicide bombing Posted: 10 May 2016 12:31 PM PDT At least 10 people were killed and 23 wounded on Tuesday when a suicide bomber blew up his car near the house of a pro-government militia commander in the province of Nangarhar, a provincial official said. The car drew up in front of the house of the commander in the Nazian district of Nangarhar, in eastern Afghanistan, according to Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor. "The commander was leading fighting against Taliban and Daeah insurgents in Nazian district," Khogyani said. |
Obama to visit Hiroshima, will not apologize for World War Two bombing Posted: 10 May 2016 01:05 PM PDT By Susan Heavey, Matt Spetalnick and Minami Funakoshi WASHINGTON/TOKYO (Reuters) - Barack Obama will become the first U.S. president to visit Hiroshima in Japan later this month, but he will not apologize for the United States' dropping of an atomic bomb on the city at the end of World War Two, the White House said on Tuesday. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize early in his presidency in 2009 in part for making nuclear nonproliferation a centerpiece of his agenda, Obama on May 27 will tour the site of the world's first nuclear bombing with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. |
China scrambles fighters as U.S. sails warship near Chinese-claimed reef Posted: 10 May 2016 09:52 AM PDT By Michael Martina, Greg Torode and Ben Blanchard BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday as a U.S. navy ship sailed close to a disputed reef in the South China Sea, a patrol China denounced as an illegal threat to peace which only went to show its defense installations in the area were necessary. Guided missile destroyer the USS William P. Lawrence traveled within 12 nautical miles (22 km) of Chinese-occupied Fiery Cross Reef, U.S. Defense Department spokesman Bill Urban said. The so-called freedom of navigation operation was undertaken to "challenge excessive maritime claims" by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam which were seeking to restrict navigation rights in the South China Sea, Urban said. |

Nizami, head of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at Dhaka Central jail just after midnight, Law Minister Anisul Haq told Reuters, after the Supreme Court rejected his final plea against a death sentence imposed by a special tribunal for genocide, rape and orchestrating the massacre of top intellectuals during the war. Nizami, 73, a former legislator and minister during opposition leader Khaleda Zia's last term as prime minister, was sentenced to death in 2014. |
Trump wins West Virginia, Sanders takes early lead Posted: 10 May 2016 04:55 PM PDT Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump cruised to victory Tuesday in West Virginia's primary, US networks projected, in the first state-wide vote since his remaining GOP rivals dropped out of the White House race. On the Democratic side, NBC projected Senator Bernie Sanders as the winner over frontrunner Hillary Clinton, while other networks said Sanders was leading but the race was too early to call. Clinton, the former secretary of state, is far enough ahead nationally that she will likely be the nominee, despite struggling to put her rival away. |
Native Americans in Oklahoma join forces to help monarch butterflies Posted: 10 May 2016 04:38 PM PDT By Heide Brandes SHAWNEE, Okla. (Reuters) - Seven Native American tribes in Oklahoma will provide habitat and food on their lands for monarch butterflies, whose numbers have plummeted in recent years due to troubles along their lengthy migration route. Tribal leaders said at a news conference on Tuesday in Shawnee, southeast of Oklahoma City, they will plant crucial vegetation for the butterflies, including milkweed and native nectar-producing plants, on their lands. "For the last several years, we have been raising bees and pollinators, so when his opportunity came along, it fit with what we were doing," Thalia Miller, director of the Chickasaw Nation Horticulture Department, told reporters. |
Canadian oil hub works to restore power, eyes resuming full oil output Posted: 10 May 2016 04:27 PM PDT Crews worked Tuesday to start restoring water and electricity in this Canadian petroleum hub crippled by huge forest fires, as officials said stalled oil production could resume in days. Oil is the lifeblood of the economy in this part of Alberta province, and the fires raging around Fort McMurray for the past 10 days or so have led to a 40 percent drop in output. Oil production facilities that have shut down altogether could get up and running "in the coming days and short weeks ahead," said Alberta Premier Rachel Notley after a meeting with oil company executives. |
Posted: 10 May 2016 04:27 PM PDT MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Rodrigo Duterte, the bombastic mayor of a major southern city, was heralded Tuesday as president-elect of the Philippines after an incendiary campaign that projected him alternatively as an emancipator and a looming dictator. "Our people have spoken and their verdict is accepted and respected," outgoing President Benigno Aquino III's spokesman, Sonny Coloma, said in a statement. "The path of good governance ... is already established as all presidential candidates spoke out against corruption." Former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who was running second behind Duterte in the unofficial vote count following Monday's election, conceded defeat. "Digong, I wish you success," Roxas said at a news conference, using Duterte's nickname. |

Government representatives are gathering Wednesday at the United Nations's civil aviation agency to negotiate a draft deal on carbon-neutral growth from 2020 which is to be voted on at a fall assembly. Temer appeared to waver in recent days on a vow to eliminate about 10 ministries as he sought to accommodate political allies to widen support for a transitional government, but Senator Romero Jucá said the vice president was sticking with the plan. Temer is set to replace President Dilma Rousseff if the Senate votes on Wednesday, as expected, to put her on trial for breaking budget laws in an impeachment process that will end 13 years of rule by the leftist Workers Party. |

Although she faces no allegations of personal enrichment, Rousseff also stands accused by Brazil's public prosecutor of obstructing a huge corruption investigation at state-run oil company Petrobras , Brazil's biggest-ever scandal. |

The team of embattled President Francois Hollande resorted to the controversial manoeuvre on Tuesday in the face of fierce opposition from within his own party that doomed the bill in parliament. The reform, which makes it easier for employers to hire and fire workers, is likely the last major piece of legislation for Hollande, the least popular leader in modern French history who faces a re-election bid next year. |
