Greek leftist Tsipras returns in unexpectedly decisive vote win Posted: 20 Sep 2015 02:44 PM PDT By Renee Maltezou and Karolina Tagaris ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek leftist Alexis Tsipras stormed back into office with an unexpectedly decisive election victory on Sunday, claiming a clear mandate to steer Greece's battered economy to recovery. The vote ensured Europe's most outspoken leftist leader would remain Greece's dominant political figure, despite having been abandoned by party radicals last month after he caved in to demands for austerity to win a bailout from the euro zone. "Today in Europe, Greece and the Greek people are synonymous with resistance and dignity. |
Pope meets Fidel Castro, warns against ideology on Cuba trip Posted: 20 Sep 2015 02:55 PM PDT By Philip Pullella and Daniel Trotta HAVANA (Reuters) - Pope Francis met Cuba's revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on Sunday hours after warning Cubans to beware the dangers of ideology and the lure of selfishness as their country enters a new era of closer ties with the United States. Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the meeting, which included Castro's wife and other family members, was "very relaxed, fraternal and friendly." Francis gave Castro several of his official papal writings, two books on spirituality and a book and CD on the writings of Father Armando Llorente, a priest who taught Castro in Jesuit prep school more than 70 years ago. Castro, who wore a blue-and-white track suit, gave him a copy of "Fidel and Religion," a 1985 book of interviews with a Brazilian priest which lifted a taboo on speaking about religion in Cuba, then officially atheist. |

U.N. nuclear watchdog says its chief visited military site in Iran Posted: 20 Sep 2015 12:15 PM PDT The U.N. nuclear watchdog, which is investigating whether Iran carried out work related to developing a nuclear bomb, said on Sunday its chief had visited a sensitive military site during a trip to the country. The visit is a highly symbolic move by the agency, which has not visited the Parchin site in a decade and has faced accusations that it reached an agreement with Tehran restricting its ability to investigate at the sprawling complex. Under a road map agreement accompanying a July deal with world powers, the IAEA is due to issue an assessment this year on "possible military dimensions" of Iran's nuclear program. |

With around 90 percent of the votes counted, Tsipras's Syriza party won 35.53 percent of the vote compared to 28.05 percent for conservative New Democracy and -- in a sense of deja vu -- will again form a coalition government with the small nationalist Independent Greeks party. As results showed the radical 41-year-old pulling ahead after a tight race shadowed by painful tax rises and pension reforms that lie around the corner, New Democracy leader Vangelis Meimarakis admitted defeat. |
