Russia vetoes bid to set up tribunal for downed flight MH17 Posted: 29 Jul 2015 01:48 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution on Wednesday that would have set up an international tribunal to prosecute those suspected of downing a Malaysia Airlines passenger airliner last year in eastern Ukraine. Eleven countries on the 15-member council voted in favor of the proposal by Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine, while three countries abstained: China, Angola and Venezuela. |
Authorities study plane debris found off Africa for links to Flight MH370 Posted: 29 Jul 2015 04:21 PM PDT PARIS/SYDNEY (Reuters) - France's air crash investigation agency is studying a piece of plane debris found on Reunion Island off the east coast of Africa but it was too early to say if it came from missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a spokesman said on Wednesday. A source familiar with the matter said the debris was most likely from a Boeing 777, but that it was not yet established if it was from MH370. A U.S. official said air safety investigators had a "high degree of confidence" the debris was from the same model as MH370, the Associated Press reported. |
Afghanistan says Taliban leader dead, urges peace talks Posted: 29 Jul 2015 03:52 PM PDT By Mirwais Harooni and Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan said on Wednesday that Mullah Omar, the elusive leader of the Taliban movement fighting to topple the government, died more than two years ago. The announcement came a day or so before a second round of peace talks had been tentatively scheduled, and news of the fate of the one-eyed Omar could deepen Taliban divisions over whether to pursue negotiations with Kabul and who should replace him. Omar had not been seen in public since fleeing when the Taliban was toppled from power by a U.S.-led coalition in 2001, and there has been speculation for years among militant circles that he was either incapacitated or had died. |
Israel approves new homes in settlement after demolishing two buildings Posted: 29 Jul 2015 05:00 PM PDT Israel gave final approval on Wednesday for plans to build 300 new homes in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, announcing the move as it carried out a court demolition order against two vacant apartment blocks in the same enclave. Dozens of Jewish settlers have gathered over the past several days at Beit El settlement to protest against the demolition. Israel's Supreme Court ruled the two partially built blocks had been constructed illegally on Palestinian-owned land. |
Top U.S. general says Iran deal lowers near-term atomic arms risk Posted: 29 Jul 2015 03:21 PM PDT By David Alexander WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. military officer supported a proposed nuclear deal with Iran on Wednesday, saying it reduced the risk of Tehran developing atomic arms while buying time to work with allies to confront the Islamic Republic over other "malign activities." Army General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Senate hearing he had advised the White House to keep sanctions on Iran's ballistic missile program and arms trafficking for "as long as possible." The deal between Iran and the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France would lift the ban on ballistic missile technology for eight years and retain an arms embargo for five. Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee asked Dempsey how he squared his backing for the deal with his statement to the panel earlier this month that "under no circumstances" should pressure be eased on Iran over ballistic missiles and arms trafficking. |

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack on the Al Faydh Alhatemy mosque, more commonly known as Burhani, in the eastern Sanaa of Nuqum, describing the bombing as revenge for what it called Ismaili support for Yemen's dominant Houthi movement. Three people were killed in the attack and seven were wounded, a security source said. |

A Coast Guard helicopter team determined the oil sheen was too thin to be recovered and would be allowed to "dissipate naturally," she Kneen said. |
